As Calvin Harris climbs to #1 with one kiss he is the sixth artist having three #1 hits in this decade
with Flames going #9 David Guetta launches his third top 10 hit in 2018. With 20 top 10 entries in this decade he is the most successful act of the 10's - on the all time list he collects 22 top 10 hits under his belt which is #8 right behind Scooter (23 hits) and one more than ABBA

August 11th 17: Longest Running No.1 Since 27 Years

Indeed Despacito by Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee feat. Justin Bieber is the best sold song for a 16th week and now is the longest running #1 since 1990 when Matthias Reim had that exactly run with Verdammt ich lieb' dich. And so both songs share the honor of being the second longest running #1 hit of the weekly German charts since 1971. Of course if one takes in account the time of the fortnightly or monthly chart issues there are four songs more that performed better. The only new top 10 song is the all star collaboration with Calvin Harris Ft. Pharrell Williams Katy Perry & Big Sean. By landing at #9 Feels gives the lady of that posse her second top 10 hit in 2017–all together she does have 11 top 10 hits on her account. DJ Calvin Harris now ads an eighth top 10 hit to his–last one is back a year ago with My Way that peaked at #5. Pharrell Williams had his last top 10 appearance back in 2014 when he brought his eponymous Happy to #1 status. Only Big Sean is really new on this chart height. So far he peaked at #12 alongside Jessie J with Wild in July 2013.
A significant rise is done by Dua Lipa's fifth chart hit New Rules. It goes 70–45 in its second chart week and directly follows top 10 hit Scared To Be Lovely on which she appeared as featured artist and got her highest chart appearance so far with #9.
At #46 a next German gangster rapper starts his song charts career. It is VEYSEL who can launch Bargeld as the highest new entry of the week.
A tiny move done from 51–49 gets the honor of attention here as Camila Cabello achieves to reach the upper half of the charts as an solo artist for the very first time. The song giving her that crown is Crying In The Club and it already sneaks through the 50s and 60s for almost three months.
May 6th 16: Drake's first No.1
No surprise at the very top as DRAKE goes number 1 with One Dance. The single tops the list in its fourth chart week which makes it the fastest number 1 hit in 2016 so far. It is Drake's first top hit in Germany (as well as in some other countries too) and the first Canadian artist topping the list here as a lead artist since Nelly Furtado did so in late 2006 with her All Good Things (Come To An End). Drake took more than five years to get here–more than SIA but very much faster than Sean Paul.
To repeat the fact: It is the first time in German chart history that a Nigerian artist who still lives on the African continent reaches the top in Germany.
The other story of the week is the arrival of the new collaboration between Calvin Harris & Rihanna. This Is What You Came For starts right at #6 giving the DJ his sixth top 10 hit and lifting the singer from Barbados further up to the heights of pop olymp. With 15 top 10 hits alone in this current decade Rihanna already is the most successful artist of the past six years. All in all she has 24 top 10 entries under her belt which is more than Scooter but one short of Depeche Mode. Measuring only female solo artists she ranks at #3 of the all time list, two entries short of Madonna but still far away from Caterina Valente who had 36 top 10 singles in her career.
A further song invading the top 10 comes in the face of French-Australian collaboration KUnGS vs. Cookin' On 3 Burners. This Girl goes 17 places up in its third chart week and brings house back to the upper end of the German list.
On the way up also rapper Desiigner is. His oldschool rap Panda goes 26–17 in its fifth chart week. Also British Julian Perretta enters the top 20. His way up slowly calms down but he still git support by a lot of house remixes around.
Galantis sets his first Top50 hit. No Money jumps 45 places to #31 in its second chart week.
Gnash feat. Olivia O'Brien land at #37 with i hate u i love u. It is the duo's second chart week.
On the album's list Udo Lindenberg rules with his new offering Stärker als die Zeit. The demand also brings Durch die schweren Zeiten back to the upper half of the song's list. It stops at #36. The album's title track lands at #90 on single downloads alone.
The third season of Sing meinen Song is aired since four weeks. It misses so far the big success we are used to from the years before. Well–the episode focussing on Samy Deluxe brings at least two entries in the list. First of all it is Samy Deluxe's own single Haus am Mehr that lands at #62–a comeback after an almost five years chart pause. On #99 Xavier Naidoo's take on Weck mich auf comes in. The original recording peaked at #4 in 2001. The cover is Xavier Naidoo's 42nd chart entry as a solo artist–as much as Udo Jürgens achieved in his whole career.

23rd of Jan 2015: Calvin Harris storms to the Top
Mattafix's Marlon Roudette also was the last British act at number 1 that was dethroned by another British act. On October the 28th 2010 it was–sic–Calvin Harris accompanying Rihanna who got number 1 with We Found Love.
Some more statistics? Calvin Harris is the third DJ who can a second number 1 hit in this current decade. So the producer trio now is Guetta-AVICII-Harris. Ellie Goulding sits at number 1 for the very first time. She only had a short number 2 visit as a member of the Band Aid 30 in November 2014.
At number 6 the first new song of the year 2015 comes in. It is Du liebst mich nicht taken from the brand new album of Ado Kojo. For the song he accompanies with blog star Shirin David. They heavily quote the Nr.1 hit from Sabrina Setlur produced in 1997.
The couple so far is the best performing new act of 2015 and the best sold German production of the moment.
Also new inside the Top 1o Mark Ronson & Bruno Mars are. Uptown Funk! goes 14–7 in its eighth chart week. It is the first time Mark Ronson achieves the Top10 since his hit Valerie (featuring Amy Winehouse) reached number 4 in 2008. Bruno Mars was stopping at number 7 for last in October 2012 with Locked Out Of Heaven.
The third new Top 10 hit comes from Taylor Swift. Blank Space is the third consecutive Top10 entry from her–going this week 12–9.
This strong turnover on the top makes Auf anderen Wegen by Andreas Bourani the song with the longest Top10 history. It now spends an 11th week here sitting still pretty at number 10. Well–the days of it might by counted as well.
On The Rise
It for sure will become big: Firestone by Norwegian Kygo Feat. Conrad goes 33-19 in its 3rd chart week. It is hard on the heels of Nico & Vince and Martin Tungevaag who brought the country back into the international pop business the past months.
With full weeks sales AYO by Chris Brown & TYGA goes 71–23 giving the first one his biggest hit since summer 2012. TYGA never was higher before. It is certainly given the song will not rise further. Chris Brown might not mind–he just enters at number 30 alongside Kid Ink and his new recording Hotel.
As a kind of surprise OMI and his song Cheerleader still rises stopping now at number 27. In contrast completely expected Meghan Trainors new single Lips Are Movin goes straight up too–this week resting at number 29.
At number 39 Sam Smith reaches a new peak with I'm Not The Only One. The song already spends the 13th week in the list.
DSDS 12
On January the 7th the 12th season of Deutschland sucht den Superstar (DSDS) started. Even the hardest fans think the show had already their best times far behind–well a performance on the show still generates demand. So the fact with Ardian Bujupi's single Boom Raka Tak. The DSDS semi finalist of 2011 released the song in September 2014 without any glimpse of success. Now two sisters danced to the song on TV–and the sales figure rise. Boom Raka Tak lands at number 60 and gives the almost superstar his second chart entry at all.
Anti-PEGIDA protest
Maybe this is the most unusual thing inside this issue of the charts. A political statement generates a hit. It was on 10th of January 2015 that schlager singer Roland Kaiser made a speech on the Je suis Charli demonstration in Dresden. His words were very direct banning the PEGIDA protesters as extremists and racists. This fact alone is hardly seen in the schlager scene.
The effect shows that not every fan of that music is a stupid nationalist. The latest single by Roland Kaiser Warum hast du nicht einfach nein gesagt released in September now enters the list at number 67. It is the highest position since 1994 for the singer. Probably politics can made stars too.
16th of Jan 2015: First New No1 of the Year
Walk goes number 1 in its ninth chart week–that ain't the straight way. And it is the first British number 1 since August past year which shows the actual low presence of British acts. There were times, when Britain ruled the whole list.
On the other hand British music shows very strong. The highest new entry lands at number 2 in the face of Clean Bandit & Jess Glynne and their new single Real Love. That makes us having the two best sold singles coming from Britain–a feat last seen on November 11th 2005. Back than Melanie C was on top with her hit First Day Of My Life followed by the Sugababes and their last big hit single Push The Button. Even a week before the two songs were accompanied by two other British acts at number 3 and 4: Robbie Williams and James Blunt were the acts completing the bunch. Those were the days…
Clean Bandit and Jess Glynne meanwhile start to becoming super acts. The band launches its second Top2 hit, the singer her third hit invading the Top 10–all that within less than a year.
Talking bout British acts: At number 6 Calvin Harris & Ellie Goulding arrive inside the Top10 with Outside. It is the first Top10 hit for the couple that already achieved number 13 in summer 2013 with I Need Your Love. Now it goes higher giving Calvin Harris his third Top10 in a row (and a fourth at all) and making Ellie Goulding visiting the Top10 for the second time (besides her appearance at the Band Aid 30-project).
In this current week there are only three new entries and three tracks re-entering the list. So only six songs had not charted the week before. This is the smallest turnover of the list since August 2011. Back in those days the charts changed much slower than today–a turnover of less than 10 songs occurred at least once within a quarter.
Tracks On The Rise
- Norwegian KYGO feat. Conrad with Firestone 84–33
- German Sasha with Good Days 57–38
- Last week's highest new entry OMI from Jamaica with Cheerleader 69-42
- Ariana Grande & The Weeknd with Love Me Harder 60–45
- Meghan Trainor with Lips Are Movin 83–53

The album doesn't perform that well in Germany. Number 2 in Britain and Switzerland and a number 5 in the US stand in sharp contrast to the number 20 new entry on the German list. Anyway it is the highest position a Calvin Harris album ever achieved here.
Other songs getting a sales boost are:
- I See Fire by Ed Sheeran goes 47–36 in its 48th chart week
- Du bist das Licht by Gregor Meyle after performed by Philipp Leon Altmeyer on the Blind audition show on 30th October – number 69 is a new peak for the song taken from the 2012 album Meile für Meyle
- Thrift Shop by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis re-enters at number 81 after a nine months absence
- Love Never Felt So Good by Michael Jackson re-entering number 83. In fact the iTunes list reports the version with Justin Timberlake much more downloaded than the solo take
- Shot Me Down by David Guetta feat Skylar Grey re-enters at 98
Way Up The Charts
30th of May: Calm After The Storm
The real German no.1 holding some weeks at the top were a few weeks before with Die Toten Hosen having their Tage wie diese five times as the most sold single.
At number 3 Calvin Harris' single Summer gets a new peak. After it was released as a physical CD last week the track steadily rises now bringing the artist into the Top 3 after two and a half year again.
Also Bakermat arrives at a new peak with One Day (Vandaag). The track jumps 16–4 in its 10th chart week and now makes the DJ the most successful Dutch artist after country band The Common Linnets last week and Mr. Probz the weeks before.
As we had the situation already last week also this current issue of the charts the Top 10 is completely crowded with European production which is much more a little sensation as the Eurovision invasion completely fades away.
The highest non-European hit is Riptide by Australian Vance Joy sitting at number 13 this week.
Releases fully on CD Kiesza bounces back into the Top20 with Hideaway. Number 16 matches exactly the result from two weeks ago when the track appeared for the first time.
A few weeks before the FIFA World Cup starts in Brazil the official anthem gets more attention. We Are One (Ole Ola) by Pitbull Feat. Jennifer Lopez & Cláudia Leitte goes 38–18. It is so far the highest position the track reached but one ain't to be a visionary to predict the song will rise much further.
A week before their album is released the American Authors are on tour through Germany. Their concerts support the sale of the single Best day Of My Life which returns to the Top 50 at number 35.
Also on the way up the latest single by Enrique Iglesias is. Bailando goes 71–44 giving the Spanish singer his first Top50 hit since three years. In fact Bailando is the most successful Spanish production since August 2012.
10 years ago she was the most successful German star. With four number 1 hits Sarah Connor still is the best performing female act of Germany of all times matching the result of Modern Talking. The last three and a half year she was completely absent from the business. Then the TV show Sing meinen Song was aired where she was one out of seven stars who covered each others songs. Now the CD accompanying the show is released and lands at number 2 on the album's list. Sarah Connor's take on Zuckerpuppen originally recorded by Andreas Gaballier can also enter the singles list at number 63. Her version performs better than the original although it is quiet certain that this success comes due to the crazyness about the Austrian star. His signature song I sing a Liad für di meanwhile spends a 74th week inside the list and with this enters the Top20 of the most charted songs of all times.
A similar story can be told bout Gregor Meyle. The singer had a short chart career five years ago after he became runner's up in a casting. Two medium hits were the result. Now he is back with a cover of the Guano Apes song Sunday Lover. His version lands at number 83.
After the record setting invasion of new entries last week 22 of them leave the list this week again. So there are 7 new tracks and 17 already known chart hits entering the list again which still is an impressive performance not seen that often within the last four years. Of course in 2008/09 the German chart had a very active phase in which more than 25 songs leaving the list for new or returning hits were kind of usual.
9th of May 2014: Andreas Bourani goes No.1
For singer Andreas Bourani it is the first number 1 hit. He started his chart career three years ago as one of a bunch of new German singer songwriter. Tim Bendzko, Phillip Poisel, Mark Forster and the likes are a new generation of sensitive stars that seems very back to musical craftsmanship.
With Waves (Mr Probz remmixed by Robin Schulz) at number 5 and Riptide (Vance Joy remixed by Flic Flac) we have three tracks of the same flavour inside the German Top 10. The fourth deep house track My Love by Route 94 feat. Jess Glynne at number 7 luckily defines the sound in a much different way.
Having Bakermat and Mr Probz simultanously in the Top 10 Dutch music has a real strong presence inside the German charts. On the opposite the highest US-American production sits as low as number 8 in the face of Pharrell Williams and his Happy. Both feats ain't seen for a long while.
Casting effects
With approaching the final the crazyness about contestants on The Voice Kids becomes a new quality. On April 29th finalists from team Nena were elected.

We do have a new Number 1. British Passenger brings his Let Her Go to number 1 in Germany also after it has peaked there already in Belgium, The Netherlands, Luxembourg, Sweden, Ireland, Austria and Australia. In his home country no sign of life of his hit single is been seen.
It took the singer 8 weeks to get to the top. Last time a song rose that slowly was back in spring last year when Tage wie dieser by Die Toten Hosen took also eight weeks for entering the top.
Passenger is the first British act since Adele (Skyfall who topped the charts–a five months long break now ends.
New inside the Top 10:
Pitbull Featuring Christina Aguilera who break the glass ceiling with Feel This Moment in their 8th chart week. It is Pitbull’s 8th and Christina’s 12th Top 10 hit in Germany.
Also new Das kleine Küken piept – kindergarden music by Pulcino Pio–I thought the carnival season is over.
Arriving inside the Top 20 Macklemore & Ryan Lewis now officially have got a second hit with Can’t Hold Us. The album The Heist hangs on number 16 in the album list.
Still two weeks ahead of its official international release I Need Your Love by Calvin Harris feat. Ellie Goulding climbs 16 places and reaches number 42.
German SCHILLER is an act that has a list of chart hits but never reached the Top 10. His current single Lichtermeer also misses that goal. It is the 16th attempt of the artist–the commercial peak of his career in the singles list was last October when the collaboration with UNHEILIG shot to number 12. On the album list Schiller is much more succesfull. He already has three number 1 albums under his belt–the latest one released in October 2012 also.
Slowly an US american rap artist becomes popular for the very first time. WAX and his single Rosana rise inside the German charts to number 58. And this is the first chart entry of that artist worldwide.
Folk and country stars Mumford & Sons were on tour in Germany. In Munich there were 6.000 fans celebrating the band. As an effect I Will Wait goes up again to number 68 in its 24th chart week.
At the very low end of the survey again comes a minimal DSDS effect. After the song Get Here was performed by Simone Mangiapane the original recording by Oleta Adams from 1990 can enter the German charts for the very first time.
The heydays of rapper NELLY are gone. The anouncement of his next album M.O. only reaches a few hardcore insiders. Also teasing single Hey Porsche did not overwhelm the audience. After three weeks in shelves the track makes a first dip inside the list at number 93. It is the first appearance of the former superstar for about two years. Since there are some dance remixes around at least the dance charts see the track climbing a few places higher.
All in all there are only 12 new or re-entering tracks inside the survey–it is the lowest turnover of hits this year so far.

Still at Number 1 for a ninth consecutive week: will.i.am & Britney Spears and her Scream & Shout. It’s only one week more to go for matching the result of Rihanna’s Diamonds which was the last song guarding the number 1 in a two figures amount of weeks.
British band HURTS returns to the list after a year long abstinence. Miracle is the teaser for the new album Exile. It is released digitally only so far and can enter number 25. The album follows next week and another further week also the CD version of the single will bereleased. These might be a good example for watching what effect physical sales still have in German charts.
The new single of Lana del Rey Dark Paradise also helps last summer’s hit single Summertime Sadness re-entering the list. The new one can be found at number 45, the old one at number 71.
Three weeks before it is officially released as a single I Need Your Love by Calvin Harris feat. Ellie Goulding enters the German charts as an digital album cut. Some remixes are around already–most of them officially not released. Slowly two of the most successful British acts become what they are in their home town for long times in Germany also now–big stars.
A year ago nobody knew LAING. In September 2012 they were the real winner of the Bundesvision Song Contest. The succeeding months made their single Morgens immer müde a hit. This week their debut Album Paradise naiv enters the album list at number 13. As an effect the single also rises some 20 places in the singles list in its 20th chart week.
The new album release of master David Bowie causes a rush in the teasing single Where Are We Now? a week before the album officially appears in shelves. The single can re-enter at number 75 and probably will rise next week further places.
Mentors for the SPIEGEL school bands contest and two nominations for the ECHO–Silbermond had some breaking news the week 1st to 7th March. Probably that’sa reason for the re-entry of their single /Ja
DSDS effects
Saturday 2nd March next recall show was broadcasted. Favourites are obviously Rene, Bojan and Wincent. They performed Some Nights originally recorded by FUN. and the song re-enters the list at number 68. So far Wincent was one of the most adored candidates. This show he had to leave the pack.
Trivia
Having two singles in the list Bruno Mars this current week reaches as much chart weeks in this decade as glorious Lady Gaga. 257 times both were listed inside the German survey for the last 3 years and 2 months. That’s only rank number 6 so far. Most successful artist still is David Guetta who alone collected 554 chart weeks between 1st of January 2010 and today.
Exactly four years after it appeared in the list for the first time the song Use Somebody by The Kings Of Leon returns to the charts. For a certain single week it jumps to number 73.

Fading German Hits And A Few New Arrivals
R(ihanna) feat. Calvin Harris rebounds to number 1. It is the third time a track can reach the top position again after having at least a one week break. In 2010 we had also three tracks bouncing down from number 1 and back again. So We Found Love does nothing unusual at all. It is Rihanna’s 11th summarized week at number 1 in her whole career. She now joins Marlon Roudette and Israel IZ Kamakawiwo’ole – both of them collected the 11 weeks with one or two hits – Rihanna so far set up shorter number 1 strikes. Umbrella spent the longest time of all her top hits right at number 1: 5 consecutive weeks. That was back in July 2007.
New inside the Top 10 is Canadian Nickelback with its new single When We Stand Together. It is the 3rd single of the band reaching the upper 10 in Germany. Further down Lana del Rey meets growing interest. The single Video Games so far was available as download only – from next week on proper CD sales count also, for sure we will see her rising much higher than recent rank 17.
The Bundesvision effect slowly fades away. For the first time since June we don’t have any single German track inside the Top 10. Best sold German track is Echt (Pure) by Glasperlenspiel which slides down one place to number 14. Right behind at number 15 stops dance production Turn This Club Around by R.I.O. feat. U-Jean. After six weeks as one of the 10 best sold singles the track now starts dropping down. On the way down also Rosenstolz with Wir sind am Leben (We Are Alive) can reach the rank as third most sold German track – actually placed at number 24.
Highest new German track enters the list at position 32. It is king of Schlager and discofox Michael Wendler who after a two and a half years break reappaers in the charts. His first commercially successful hit Sie liebt den DJ (She Loves The DJ) had an impressive 30 weeks chart run although it only climbed to number 27. Since than the song became somewhat of an discofox anthem played at almost every party from Après Ski and carnival season to Ballermann Mallorca discos and the Oktoberfest. This year Michael Wendler decided to release a sequel to his hit. Now it’s called Sie liebt ihn immer noch (She Still Loves Him). The new song contains all the ingredients the old one already showed including parts of the lyrics. It is a very simple formula milked here.
The new single was released as double A-side containing a duet with young Schlager talent Anika who was casted by Michael Wendler himself earlier this year. In The Heat Of The Night was chosen as second track for the single in September when both performed the song in Oberhausen. The sound of that track is slightly different to all older releases. Seems Michael Wendler tries to enrich his repertoire with more eurodance sound. So far the new single performs in a more or less semi-successful way.
Second German artist celebrating commercial success is Roger Cicero’s. Propelled by the release of his new album which enters at number 4 at the album list teh title track and single In diesem Moment (At This Moment) jumps 97–48 in its second week.
And a third German artist has something to offer. Peter Maffay is announcing a new album, the sixth of the Tabaluga series for children. Die Zeit hält nur in Träumen an (Only In Dreams Time Stops) is the leading single featuring Monrose singer Mandy Capristo. It enters at position 86 as Peter Maffay’s 46th chart single.
Sorry for not embedding the video here. SONY does not support its artists by allowing their videos be shared. If you wanna have a look at the clip try out supported portal MyVideo.
Some releases from Switzerland and Austria also penetrating the charts more or less succesfull. Leading the pack due to it’s final release on CD is DJ Antoine feat. The Beat Shakers. The single Ma Chérie jumps 99–33. The track reminds me a lot to Stereo Love by Edward Maya feat. Vika Jigulina. Well – it is somewhat of an follower to DJ Antoine’s remix hit Welcome To St. Tropez which reached number 3 back in summer.
Already for 5 weeks on Top in Austria Hubert von Goisern can also enter the German list with Brenna tuats guat (It Burns Well – in strong Austrian dialect). It is for the first time the folk singer can reach the German charts. Probably the strong lyrics caused the sudden success although it is hard to understand for most Germans. The song expresses the anger about the financial crisis in Europe.
Second Austrian entering the German chart is fii. He performs as a living beat box and applied for participation at X Factor a few weeks ago. The audience were celebrating his performance – the judge said NO. Well – the album released already a year ago in Austria now is distributed also in Germany. The „hit single“ Power To The People can enter the list at 67 in ist first week.
Talking bout X Factor: the weekly instant effect is somehow lower than other weeks. Motto of hte show aired on 1st November was The Wild 80s. Obviously the interest in original songs recorded 30 years ago is minimal. No song performed at the show appears in the recent list. Only Kelly Clarkson gets a boost in sales after performing her single Mr Know It All at the show. The track now sits proper at number 18.

A New Nr.1, A Broken Record + Sinking Superstars
Rihanna’s new single storms to number 1 in Germany too. We Found Love is the fourth Nr.1 hit for the singer coming from Barbados. 17 of the 25 chart hits crediting Rihanna as an artist went Top 10, 12 of them even Top 5. That makes her one of themost successfull acts of the recent millenium so far.
Alongside Rihanna British DJ and producer Calvin Harris finally can launch a hit in Germany. He only appeared twice in the lists so far: 2008 with his debut Acceptable in the 80s and a year later alongside Dizzee Rascal on his single Dance Wiv Me. Both stalled somewhere outside the Top 20.
Having a new Number 1 track means Moves Like Jagger will never reach the top. MAROON 5 Feat. Christina Aguilera spend a 7th week at the runner’s up position. So far only six other songs ever did so. The last one was Stadt (City) by Cassandra Steen featuring Adel Tawil two years ago.
Most significant rise into the Top 10 comes from David Guetta feat. USHER. The video to their track Without You was premiered at 14th October. Instantly the track can gain more interest and rises five places reaching a new peak at number 7. Two days ago the remixes were released online – the proper CD releases of both the original and the remixes follow at 4th of November. So we will see the track rising further for sure. Meanwhile Guettamania gots more stuff to be focused on. The new Timbaland single Pass At Me features besides Pitbull also the French DJ. The track enters this week at number 27. It is the 25th track that features David Guetta inside the German charts.
Outside the top positions a chart record is broken. Sky And Sand taken from the soundtrack of the movie Berlin Calling by techno/electro DJ Paul Kalkbrenner and his brother Fritz reaches in its 81st chart week a new peak. The track rises 43–35 leaving the best position from more than a year ago two places behind. Never before a track had such a long attempt getting to its peak. It was Last Christmas by Wham! that held the record so far – it peaked in its 72nd chart week at number 4 at the end of 2007.
Why does it took so long for Sky And Sand to reach this peak (which is honestly spoken not impressing high at all)? Well – Paul Kalkbrenner is a famous DJ only within a very sophisticated club scene. Of course every weekend thousands of dancers pilgrim into locations playing more minimal sound. The complete track of these parties mostly isn’t departed in single hits. There are a few anthems that are available on vinyl or as a digital copy, hardly on CD. Maybe some of these anthems find their way onto compilations – that’s something of a big luck for the artists. For being successfull in a mainstream way the sound is too hidden. There are only two or three radio stations playing it, music TV is not interested at all, so the whole club thing is something absolutely independent.
The movie Berlin Calling was a quite unusual attempt of bringing the scene to a wider audience. Actually the movie never was a huge hit – instead it was played a whole year in small cinemas and became something of an underground cultic movie. Even today a lot of people are addicted to the movie. Last June Paul Kalkbrenner released the succeeding album to Berlin Calling called Icke wieder (Me, Again – in Berlin slang). That one propelled to number 2 at the album charts – absolutely unusual for an techno/electro album. Supported by that huge demand the old hit Sky And Sand found a lot of new interest too. Over last weeks Paul Kalkbrenner is on promotional tour for his album – with huge success: twice 17.000 visitors in Berlin, 7000 in Hamburg, 9000 in Stuttgart, two sold out performances in Dresden, 10.000 people in Leipzig, 5.700 in Göttingen … does anybody wonder why his signature hymn rises again that strong?
TV effects
The sixth show of Dieter Bohlen’s autumn format Das Supertalent (German version of theGot Talent idea) was aired at Saturday 15th. The big star of the show was 13 year old Ciran Karaca from Göttingen. He sang Rolling In The Deep. Adele’s original version profits from the performance and rockets back 51–24. It is already the 42nd chart week of the track.
Michael Spicek also had a chance at the show. He chosed You Raise Me Up and failed by forgetting the English lyrics. Three times NO for him from the jury – out off the show. Although the original from Irish Westlife does pop up in the charts at number 76 – so a beloved track can’t be killed by a bad performance. It is the third time in 2011 that You Raise Me Up can enter the charts after a performance in a casting show.
A third contestant of the show causing a track reentering the charts is Stefan Gertler. He performed Home originally recorded by Michael Bublé. The track appears again at 95 – it’s the second time this year.
A second time Austrian Andreas Gabalier can profit from a TV performance. On 16th of October he staged at Herbstfest der Volksmusik (Autumn Feast Of Folk Music – here Folk Music means mainly folcloristic „Schlager“). The show is one of the most watched shows in German TV, broadcasted by public ARD. Of course the majority of followers is somewhat over 50. As an effect of his performance direct tubed to the target group the single i sing a liad für di (I Sing A Song For You – in Austrian dialect) jumps up the sales charts 78–30 to a new peak and even outsells the covered version by DJ Ötzi that rises 57–37 also. What a feat!

There are a few smaller TV shows that influence the music market. One of them is for sure Ina’s Nacht from Hamburg that focusses much more on serious German musicians. Ina Müller „discovered“ bands like Jupiter Jones – performing in her show is somewhat like being ennobled. Last show at 15th October German Rapper Casper was featured, acompanied by Ina Müller herself (and Lena also was sitting on the bar). The track So Perfekt rises 96–62.
New German releases hitting the charts
The digital aera finally hits Germany. An independent comedy trio that serves their fan crowd weekly with new material on their youtube channel started selling a song without any professional distributor. The result is amazing – they crack the charts at number 48, only promoted via their own channel and social network activities. To the German market this is absolutely new. All former independent hits at least had a professional distributor making the advertisement and launching a release at iTunes, amazon et al. That a crazy crowd of youngsters can do all that alone might start a process of re-thinking the complete structure of distribution.
The track in question is not a high quality product at all. It fits all clichees you might have about young men searching for sex. The title Ständertime (Hard-On Time) says everything, isn’t it. What would happen if the song would be a quality one?
Sinking Superstars
The re-invention of a former superstar is a thing never made successfully. Last week we saw superstar ’08 Thomas Godoj struggling for reaching the upper half of the sales charts with his new singleDächer einer ganzen Stadt (Roofs Of A Whole City) – he failed at 55. This week it is superstar’07 Mark Medlock who lands hard down to earth. Till last year his career was the most succesfull of all winners of the TV casting. Eight Top Ten hits in a row, four years on top of the mainstream charts – that’s a feat only Tokio Hotel and Lady Gaga have it under their belt within the past 10 years. A year ago Mark Medlock and Dieter Bohlen quitted their collaboration. Mark Medlock discovered soul as his own passion and recorded a whole album with soul covers that was released a week ago. The first single lifted from this album is The Other Side Of Broken. Probably it is tne best song Mark Medlock ever recorded – without the power of his inventor the singer is kind of helpless. Number 55 in the week of its release means: this star is sinking rapidly. – Even if Mark now is more natural, more authentic or more lucky, the question still is around: is being ones a superstar of Dieter Bohlen a thing you ever could ignore? Is a career after the casting itself possible without damage of yourself? Mark Medlock could be the one bringing the answer.
Dethroned Superstars Number 2 are: SCOOTER. They were and they are one of the most successful German bands/acts of all times having 47 charting singles and 23 Top 10 hits under their belt. The last time they had a big hit was in 2009 with the cover of Matia Bazar’s hit Ti Sento. This year they released three singles – and let me tell you, these three singles are the worst sold SCOOTER singles in the whole band history. Their latest offer David Doesn’t Eat tries to copy growing dubstep style and sampling the refrain of A Walk In The Park – a number 3 hit from the Nik Straker Band in 1979. The result is a lame number 67. One could say: 18 years on top is enough – I guess the boys could easily go retired spending their money and having fun for themselves.
