The big pre-summer turnover starts as we have 11 new entries including six of them inside the Top 20. So there are strong new releases around. Lets start:
No surprise at the top. DSDS winner Luca Hänni storms to number 1 right after he was elected as the new superstar. As always the ever beefing portal oljo reported a big fail of the single. The true is that the single and the winner is entering the top easily. Only once in history a winner of DSDS failed to reaching number 1. It was 2004 champion Elli Erl having that honour.
Don’t Think About Me is the first single since Flo Rida’s Good Feeling in late November that can enter the list straight at the top position. The last artist starting his solo debut at number one was Marlon Roudette back in September. Of course he had a number 1 hit with the band Mattafix before – so the debut right at the top is arguable. The last really new star with an instant number 1 hit was of course superstar predecessor Pietro Lombardi in May 2011.
As most of the chart facts of Luca Hänni are kind of awaited he really can set a benchmark as a singer coming from Switzerland. For finding the last number 1 of an Swiss we have to go back to the year 1996 when DJ and producer Robert Miles brought his Children for seven weeks to number 1. It was the ultimate spring hit back then. The same year he released two other hits but then his popularity decreased dramatically. Although still releasing material he is now only known to a hard core of dream house fans.
A further feat is reached with Luca Hänni storming to number 1. With DJ Antoine sitting at number 8 still we have two Swiss acts simultanously invading the German Top 10. I don’t know, when we had that situation before and it seems to me quite like a novum (at least in the younger history).
Also number two of the DSDS casting daniele negroni sees his version of Don’t Think About Me charting at the upper end of the list. The reason why it only lands at number 4 is a very well regulated. First of all the recording by Daniele is available only as download track. Second there is no video available–neither the one of his performance on the show. I would say the label (plus master Bohlen himself) was very nervous about seeing the “looser” selling more units than the winner. It would be kind of a desaster having crowned the wrong one. Seeing the song daniele had performed as season’s best (Forgive Forget in original by CALIGOLA) rising into the Top 10 again the very strong interest in the runner’s off star is heavily underlined. As comparison: Luca Hänni's season’s best The A Team only can make it up 12 places to number 48.
Icelandic band Of Monsters And Men are newcomer to the Top 10 this week too. The song Little Talks rises five places to number 7 after the album My Head Is An Animal was released and debuts at number 4 on the album list. Of Monsters And men is the first Icelandic act in the Top 10 after Emilíana Torrini occupied the Top in July and Augsut 2009.
And another record is set this week. 9 of 10 singles of the Top 10 are recorded by European acts. One of that with “help” from US/Cuban star Pitbull. Only Drive By at number 6 coming from train is a complete non-European production. Impressive!
More German productions enter the list further down. The most active project at the moment is Berlin based culcha candela. Right now it offers a next single called Von allein (By Itself). It is a soca styled dance track dealing with the multicultural atmosphere of events like the football EM. Using some noisy club sounds the song is slightly more dancefloor oriented than other hits of the band. It starts at number 20.
MC Boris Lauterbach of Fettes Brot starts a solo career under the project name Der König tanzt (The King Dances). The first song published back in March was Alles dreht sich (Everything Turns Around). It is a dancefloor infected pop song describing the weird reality of now. The song itself was not able to enter the charts until the full album of King Boris was released. Now that one starts its chart life at number 17 on the album list and simultanously the single takes a leap up to number 62. So finally the song becomes popular.
Back with a new single and an album is Stanfour. The band released its last single in 2010. Learning To Breathe is the current single and it sounds quite similar to the hits the boys had two years ago. Maybe the sound is a tiny more orchestral. So far it seems the success of past days can’t be repeated.
And finally Helene Fischer works on her career as a single hit seller. After her performance at the Cologne Schlagernacht where 10.000 fans celebrated the conservative German sound her last hit Die Hölle morgen früh (The Hell Tomorrow Morning) returns to the list at number 91. The track is still available digitally only. On 18th of May the release of a CD single is scheduled. So expect the queen of Schlager back in the list much higher soon.

12-12: Deichkind, Kraftklub, Tim Bendzko
Yeah! Hamburg trio Deichkind finally hits the Top 10. Their next announced single Leider geil (Sorry, wicked) is rising 13–6. It is the soundtrack to the actual life. You have to be aware of much things: pollution, sustainability, social issues, health … the fun things in life are completely different. A lot of people think like that and that’s the reason Leider geil is becoming more and more popular. The full CD release is scheduled for end of March. Will this be the first super hit for Deichkind? – So far it is the best selling track of its whole career. And this recent week it is the best sold German track as well.
Following on number 10 is UNHEILIG and the new single So wie du warst (Just as you were) and just behind it at number 12 again is Deichkind with Bück dich hoch (Stoop Up). Back at the Top 20 after the release of their album is MIA.. The Berlin band sees its single Fallschirm (Parachute) rising 10 places to number 18 again. The album Tacheles performs much better at number 3 in its initial week.
After the start of their tournee also The BossHoss can re-enter the Top 20. Don’t Gimme That stalls for this week at number 19.
Best new song of the week comes from Chemnitz based KRAFTKLUB (Power Club). They first had been listened to last autumn with their province anthem Ich will nicht nach Berlin (I don’t want to go to Berlin) that made a surprising number 5 at Bundesvision Song Contest. In February they released their debut album Mit K (With K) which immediately stormed to number 1 on the album list. With Songs für Liam the story continues. It is still music from the smaller towns but it has the power of fascinating not only the kids from there. It starts chart life at number 40 on downloads only. There are more things to come that will happen within the next two years certainly.
German newcomer 2011, winner of Bundesvision Song Contest and of the BAMBI award plus the 1live Krone – all these is Tim Bendzko. He now releases a third single from debut album Wenn Worte meine Sprache wären (If Words Would Be My Language). The track is named Ich laufe (I Run) and again it is a ballad. Bendzko sings about the ongoing life, the searching for luck and the truth that only stops at the very end. The song was available as a single download track before–that probably explains the low start at number 47 after it is released as a full CD single.
Supported by a very successful album Santiano is rising also in the singles list. Same titled song jumps 90–74 while the album is entering number 1. And also Jupiter Jones are on the road again and see their Still appearing back in the charts. Two days ago they won the ECHO award as the best radio song–so we will have the song for sure some more weeks inside the list.

First let’s have a look at Switzerland which exports a lot of music these days. We find six tracks inside the list coming from there. Most successful mow is Stefanie Heinzmann. Her Diggin’ in The Dirt overtakes so far leading Ma chèrie by DJ Antoine.New material is dropped by another club act bringing us one of the biggest club hits of the 90s back at number 44. Originally Insomnia was a hit for Faithless in 1996–it stormed the dancefloors and the charts reaching number 2 where it held four weeks. In 2005 a remix was released and the tune since then is appearing again and again in the list cementing its status as a timeless classic. After the success of One Night In Ibiza Swiss DJ and producer Mike Candys can chart with his very first Swiss hit in Germany too. It is a re-work of Insomnia only slightly differing from the original. As companion his friend Jack Holiday appears as performer.
And another Swiss act stops for a short visit right now. It is DJ Bobo–probably the most successful Swiss act at all–who offers a new single from his latest album Dancing Las Vegas. Main track of the new release is La Vida Es–a typical eurodance track. The CD also contains a version on Volare and a live recording of Let The Good Times Row. The single dips to number 82. It is a certain thing that in next week time DJ Bobo is already disappeared again.
Best sold Austrian track is Brenna tuats guat (It Burns Well) by Hubert von Goisern after he had some performances in Northwest Germany. The track jumps 66–45 in its 20th chart week. For a dialect song not being good mood folcloristic Schlager it is an unbelievable chart career. He is joined by coutrymen Andreas Gabalier and DJ Ötzi.

Also this week we can find some hits clearly profiting of the performance on the actual TV casting. March 10th the motto was “Party Hits”. Besides Ai Se Eu Te Pego and Titanium that are still in the list Give Me Everything gained most places jumping back into the list at 73. Given that it was not only the song but also the performer who had an impact on the new interest it was Hamed Anousheh who supported the all star collaboration between Pitbull, NE-YO, Afrojack & Nayer.The track already spent 42 weeks inside the German charts.
Exactly one year ago On The Floor by JLO Feat. Pitbull appeared in the list for the first time. Last week it dropped out for the first time since then. Now it appears once again at number 82 after Silvia Amaru staged with the song on DSDS. Unfortunatly the performance was highly anticipated but still she had to leave the show.
And the last DSDS influenced re-entry: Is he one of the favourites or not? Jesse Ritch can launch a song he performed in the list once again. This time it is Yeah 3x originally by Bobby Brown.
Last statistical gimmick at the end: this week we have the first survey since the start of 2009 without any Lady Gaga song mentioned. The lady had a consecutive three years chart presence till now. It is Marry The Night that drops off the charts as the last single of her. Hmmm … I promise you that the world still turns around. See ya all next week.

04-12: It's Après Ski party time
In Britain the year 2012 starts with an uncommon mass of high quality products inside the charts. In Germany it is much more about selling well known hits and their remixes – it is Après Ski time. Cheesy dance productions benefit the most of this collective party mood this recent week. It makes DJ Antoine feat. The Beat Shakers rising 21–17 with their Ma Chérie which is a mixture of Mr. Saxobeat and Welcome To St. Tropez. For a second time the Swiss DJ can reach the German Top 20 – giving him slowly the status he has in his home country. The Beat Shakers who deliver voice (and hook line) mark a historical moment in pop business: they are the first Serbian act reaching the Top 20 in Germany.
Compared to DJ Antoine’s predecessor Welcome To St. Tropez (remixing Timati feat. Kalenna) the recent single follows a similar pattern. It takes a slow rise – now it collects 15 chart weeks. Welcome To St. Tropez ended up at number 3. Well, that’s a challenge. – It is still a question whether just entering track I’m On You can follow that pattern too. So far the remix of the Timati, P. Diddy & Dirty Money track lands at number 85 as DJ Antoine’s fifth chart hit in Germany.
Also rising again is the other big Swiss DJ of the moment. Collaboration team Mike Candys & Evelyn Ft. Patrick Miller was just honoured with Gold for 150.000 sold units of their dance hit One Night In Ibiza. The list sees the track taking a 54–39 leap.
It’s not only about the completely poor Après Ski sound–there are some regular dance productions benefitting from the lust for shaking too. First of all Kelly Rowland feat. The WAV.s make a huge jump to number 31 in their seventh chart week. Maybe this RedOne production finally catches fire. Also The DiscoBoys take their chance releasing a cover of Around The World as their next proper single. The original recording by project ATC was a number 1 hit in 2000 heavily melking the formula of cheesy and completely naive (or should I say childish?) eurodance pop. The new version drives the tune into a pseudo glamorous hedonistic disco track. The video hardly tries to be cool–unfortunately that’s the big difference to the original: it never supposed to be a good track and never was. People who seriously party to Around The World can only look embarassing–including semi tough rappers.

Another dance track already released back in December is reanimated these days. The Swedish House Mafia vs. Knife Party reappears at number 63 with their Antidote. Still it is the track of the trio performing the weakest. – Also David Guetta heavily profits this week. His track Turn Me Back from the Nothing But The Beat album re-enters the list at number 77. There are some new remixes announced for the end of the month–the track featuring Nicki Minaj will hang around the list for sure next weeks.
The second big hit maker of the week is the casting show The Voice Of Germany once again. Besides a lot of typically short re-appearances of well known hits one act really profits from the airing. It is the coach team of The BossHoss. Their recent album Liberty Of Action still ranks inside the album Top 10 while the single Don’t Gimme That rises continously. This actual week it reaches the Top 20 giving the band its highest rank ever on the singles list. Certainly the track will rise to its peak next week when sales after Live Show #4 are take into account. In that show The BossHoss staged live with their hit.
Besides this longtime effect the show also causes directly the highest new entries in the German single’s list. Seeing the rates tumbling down for the third live show on January 13th the impact ain’t that massive compared to the week before. The highest new entry of the week Up by James Morrison featuring Jessie J was presented in the show by James Morrison and coach Xavier Naidoo. The single lands at number 19 in its first week on sale. It is James Morrison’s second single from the Awakening album and turns out to be the worst charting single since he stormed to number 1 with Broken Strings in late January 2009. To tell you a positive story–predecessor I Won’t Let You Go is propelled by the performance back up the charts and lands proper at number 64.
The best selling contestant for now is Katja Friedenberg. At the show she was kicked out by her coach Xavier – in reality she was the favourite of a lot of people. Number 41 for her take on Flugzeuge im Bauch (Airplanes In My Stomach) is much better than the performance of her Turning Tables interpreted a week earlier. The original of Flugzeuge im Bauch was a hit for Herbert Grönemeyer in 1985. It reached number 44. It became much more famous when it was covered by German Oli P. who brought the new recording to number 1 for seven weeks in 1998. The success in Austria and Switzerland was similar.
Comparing the original and the new version one will easily find the recent one surprisingly pathetic and chanson like. The one by Herbert Grönemeyer had much more connection to the real life and real emotions. Maybe that lack of authentic feelings is the reason why she had the leave the show.
Mic Donet is the second contestant who can launch a second chart hit–and he is one of the really big favourites of the show. On January 13th he performed the Killer / Papa Was A Rolling Stone medley first combined on a record in 1993 by George Michael while performing the Five Live concert remembering and celebrating the just died Freddie Mercury. The medley was a huge hit in Great Britain where it was released as a double A-side single with Somebody To Love. It never reached the list in Germany. Both parts of the medley were popular in Germany before. The original version of Killer was a hit twice. First it reached number 2 in 1990 credited to British dance producer Adamski only. Singer on that release was Seal who released an own version credited to him alone a year later. Once Killer was again a minor hit in Germany. It was in 1999 when German DJ ATB released it in a heavy trance version reaching number 31 in Germany.
The Temptations made the track Papa Was A Rollin’ Stone famous in Germany. Their version reached number 11 in 1972. In 1990 the version of Was Not Was reached number 14.

An instrumental version is used as the title theme of German TV serial Lenßen & Partner–a semi documentary about a lawyer and his cases. The serial started somewhen in 2003. Three years ago it was closed down. The old seasons of course are broadcasted in heavy rotation in the morning. A few days ago the channel SAT.1 announced a new season starting in March 2012. Probably these news caused a run on the DVDs of the past season and propelled the EMINEM track into the charts again. That’s my theory–if anyone knows a better reason, please let me know.

Three years ago it was closed down. The old seasons of course are broadcasted in heavy rotation in the morning. A few days ago the channel SAT.1 announced a new season starting in March 2012. Probably these news caused a run on the DVDs of the past season and propelled the EMINEM track into the charts again. That’s my theory–if anyone knows a better reason, please let me know.
Upspeeding Charts With A Small Swiss Invasion
The Christmas rush started. The industry is releasing new material and the audience is buying. The German single’s charts dated November 25th counts 15 new entries. It is the biggest turnover of the list with completely new material. Of course we saw the two first weeks in March 21 resp. 20 tracks entering the charts – back than 10 resp. 6 of that tracks were re-entries. This recent week we do have 15 completely new tracks entering the list. The last time that happened was in February 2010 – almost 2 years ago. So the charts are speeding up right now. Of course there is a lot to tell you about – let’s start right at the top.
With a huge jump Flo Rida enters the number one with his new single Good Feeling. It is the 6th number 1 hit coming fromm an U.S. act in 2011. The states do rule the German (and European) music market. Even after an unusual four month break during late summer nothing really changed. Flo Rida is displacing Rihanna and it’s quite significant that Good Feeling also features an European producer. It is actually Swedish AVICII (Tim Bergling) who milked the formula used for his own Levels once again. It gives both rapper and producer the first ever Number 1 in Germany. Flo Rida took three and a half years reaching the top. It’s a way some others had gone before, however it is far and away from the very common career of storming the top within the first year with one of the first three singles of an act. It took Flo Rida a full 13 singles to get that much interest. He first appeared within the German charts with Low (featuring T-Pain) in 2007. Two years later he had his first big hit with Right Round (featuring Ke$ha). The big boost came late 2010 when his single Club Can’t Handle Me (produced by David Guetta) went number 4. Since then three singles were released crediting him as a performing artist. All three went Top 10. Now Good Feeling as the leading single to his upcoming album Only One Rida (Part 2) is breaking all walls. By climbing to number 1 Flo Rida is definitely one of the big male U.S. stars of now. Only Taio Cruz is someone who has similar popularity right now.
The highest new German release enters the list at position 5. It is the recent single of Rammstein lifted from their upcoming Best of album Made In Germany 1995-2011. As always the track is controversial, ironical and disambiguitive. The title Mein Land (My Country) refers to a strong self-assertion on one hand and to really right wing nationalism on the other hand. As always the band identifies itself as unpolitical – the video by Jonas Åkerlund is a comic strip on a 60s beach party. Trying to encode the signs and quotes leads nowhere. It is an empty style using a lot of clichees – it’s your own turn to love or hate it.
Usually the hits of Rammstein only spend some few weeks in the charts. Certainly also Mein Land will leave the list before the change of years.
Maybe we will see the new song from Pietro Lombardi a few weeks longer. Goin’ To L.A. is only the third single and it is completely new material – however the track misses the top 20. Is the career of the 2011 superstar over after only six months? Well – all the teenies and casting addictives are waiting for the winner of the Supertalent show. No need for stars of the springtime at all.
Another participant of the DSDS casting in springtime finally starts a career by releasing singles. Ardian Bujupi – the number 3 although he was far and away the best performer of the crowd – appears with This Is My Time. It is teen pop as well however it surprises by using strongly dancehall beats and effects. In terms of music this single is the most interesting a contestant of the last DSDS season had released. In terms of sales he unfortunately fails by only reaching position 40. Hopefully he himself does have enough strength for releasing further material. He really might become a popstar.
There is a next casting format starting on German TV. The Voice of Germany differs the most by the choice of the jury. Besides Nena, Xavier Naidoo and Rea Garvey the two front men of German country band BossHoss try to find the most amazing voice. Possibly they are the most unknown inside the show – they never had a commercial hit single although their five albums all reached the upper ranks at the album charts – only the first one missed narrowly the Top 10.
A week before the show starts on TV the band releases a new single. Don’t Gimme That immediately enters position 42. It is so far the second highest rank the band ever reached missing the result of the very first single Hey Ya! by only one place.
Let’s switch from an upcoming TV event to a past one. On November 10th the ceremony of the BAMBI awards took place. Once upon a time it was the most important German award in media and music business. Meanwhile there are doubts ’bout the importance of this „event“. The well planned scandal of this year’s BAMBI was the decoration of rapper Bushido with the award for integration.
The relevance of the award to music business shows up with sales right after the show. As an effect of her performance at the show (plus decoration with the price as Best international Artist) Lady Gagas new single Marry The Night enters at a low position 44. – Gagamania seems kind of cooled down. The lady is on tour in Europe to promote her new single and fails even in Britain (#18 after a performance at an X Factor result show !!) Well, it is the fifth single from her Born This Way album. Almost everybody owns a copy, isn’t it? – The full CD single release of Marry The Night is scheduled for 2nd December. The prospects of becoming a huge hit are very small.
Somewhat like an comeback can be witnessed at position 45. Singer Christian Franke had a hit in 1982 with Ich wünsch dir die Hölle auf Erden (I Wish You To Hell). Two follow up medium hit singles were released in 1982 and than a long silence broke down around him. In 2009 a short appearance back in the list with new material and now – again 2 years later – it seems the singer is back for real. Der Apfelbaum (The Apple Tree) is a kitschy ballad asking why people do all the bad things on earth: nuclear weapons, wars, environmental pollution, injustice ... The video shows star actor Heiner Lauterbach trying to explain that cruel world to his child. A serious topic, unfortunately produced to death by David Brandes and drowned in panpipe sound by Edward Simoni. I guess the result doesn’t change the world … it’s a pity.
A funny story full with trivias can be found around Ilhama. The singer from Azerbaijan won the national casting for the Eurovision Song Contest in 2011 – however Ell/Nikki participated in Düsseldorf and won. Ilhama finally also enters Europe with her version on Bei mir bist du scheen a classic tune grown famous by The Andrews Sisters. The track alone wouldn’t find any new fan – combined with a beat and fitted to recent electro-swing hype the Azerbaijan singer can enter the German list at position 48. Producer of the hit is German DJ OGB. I guess the track might have a chance of growing.
Lowest German new entry can be found at position 82. Tom Lüneburger is a young German singer songwriter who right now announces his second album. As lead single he offers we are one a duet with the voice of Silbermond Mrs. Stefanie Kloß. It’s a combination copying the formula young singer plus well known voice/face like heard before with Revolverheld feat. Marta Jandová or Bosse & Anna Loos. Well, it works again.
Let's have a look to Germany's neighbour Switzerland. Right now it sends some popular releases into the hit list – leading the bunch is still DJ Antoine with two hits Welcome To St. Tropez and Ma chérie. Mike Candys & Evelyn ft. Patrick Miller are still strong in sales with their One Night in Ibiza. This week two further Swiss productions join the club.
DJ Remady is hard on the heels of his famous colleagues and launches a second hit in Germany. Give Me A Sign is a late follow up to I’m No Superstar showing up in the lists last year. The new offer enters at position 58 – it is the highest rank so far for the DJ.
And finally an old mate is back: In 2011 DJ BOBO gave his 1001st concert. It was in Las Vegas and Mr. Bobo was quite impressed by the city – his next album is to be called Dancing In Las vegas. The first single taken from that release is Everybody’s Gonna Dance.If you love to listen to DJ Bobo you will for sure love the track too. So far the single performs bad. Position 70 is one of the worst placing ever. Only Colors Of Life stalled 5 places lower in 2001.

But it is a Russian-Swiss collaboration that really wrote headlines. DJ Antoine vs. Timati feat. Kalenna rise 12–6 with Welcome To St. Tropez giving all three a first Top 10 hit at all. It is the highest position a Russian artist claimed since All The Things She Said by Russian girl duo t.A.T.u. occupied Number 1 in 2003. Swiss acts are much more present in German charts – the last one climbing number 6 or higher was Stefanie Heinzmann in 2008.

Although I doubt that Weightless can rise much higher than its entry position number 46.
Another club track comes in at 58. It is Austrian team Darius & Finlay (actually it is a trio) that can launch a seventh hit in Germany. Here comes the night is a stadium electro track – very similar to a lot of other club tracks. Probably the refrain hookline is something one can really identify the track. They only made it once to the upper half of the charts – this attempt so far also fails.
A naive song coming from France enters very low down at number 92. Lolita or as she is named for German speaking market Lolita Jolie is adoring a Jolie Garçon. The funny thing around the track is, that Lolita Jolie pretends to be German … That might explain why the track comes in a bunch of different mixes – all from German DJs. Since start of July the track is available as a digital download single – now it is released on CD as well and the interest and fun has reached anamount for ranking inside the Top 100.
Last new track entering the German charts comes from Swedish Firefox AK known to her mother as Andrea Kellerman. As singer of Tiger Lou she already had a few releases under her belt. Boom Boom Boom is her first release gaining popularity in Germany.

May 54: Fragile List with Tons of New Entries
On the third official list of Der Automatenmarkt covering the plays in May 1954 a first change at the very top goes on: Lys Assia enters the #1 with Schweden-Mädel and so launches the first #1 for a Swiss act in Germany–of course only if one ignores the published list (compiled for Hamburg) of January 1954 when Vico Torriani was listed at the top with Granada.
With topping the list the singer crowns herself as she is one of the most successful recording stars in early 1954.
At #2 Ding Dong Boogie by Renée Franke & Helmut Zacharias goes. The song takes a 23 places leap compared to the issue of April 1954.

On eight recordings Germans appear as performer, on three recordings Swiss singers are the main act. Two performer have two songs inside the top 10 as there are Lys Assia with Schweden-Mädel and O mein Papa and German Hans-Arno Simon with Anneliese and as part of Drei Simons with Es ist so wunderschön.

In March the recording was listed at #9, a month ago it was totally out off the list (with 35 places). A similar figure can be watched with Moulin Rouge by Mantovani. The song was listed at #6 in March '54 dropped out of the Top35 and now returns to #24.
On the other hand the #1 of April 54 Wir, wir, wir, haben ein Klavier by Zehn Whiskys und ein Soda drops completely out of the Top 40.
