2nd Feb 18

- Ed Sheeran holds firm at #1 with Perfect. With 24 weeks at the top at all he now is more successful than Rihanna.
- more than one and a half year after his #1 hit One Dance drake is back in the top 10. His new offering calls God's Plan. It is only his third top 10 hit so far.

August 7th 15: Robin Schulz gets a third #1

This is my 400th post on this blog. Meaning almost exactly eight years ago I started watching the German singles charts and analyzing movers toppers long runners and so on. The blog itself changed several times–as this column was visited much more from English or Russian speaking countries I changed the language. The stories I tell also differs a lot between 2008 and now. Well–thank you for joining me and leaving your comments. A few days ago my facebook page Pop.Schredder also started. Hope you will be there as well.

Back to the charts:
First #1 as main artist, second as properly featured artist, third #1 as producer/mixer. Additionally two top 10 hits as main act one of them peaking at #2 and a further remix of an existing hit charting as extra entry and peaking at #35. That's the result so far for one and a half year of chart career. The act in question is young German DJ / producer Robin Schulz who is hard on the way of becoming the best seling German act of this decade. Depending on which statistic you trust more he already is as popular and successful as rapper CRO who started two years earlier. At least in terms of single hits he really comes close to the level of CRO.

What is different to the rapper is the international attention Robin Schulz gets. After "discovering" British singer Jasmine Thompson for the European area and featuring USAmerican songwriter Ilsey Juber it is now very young Canadian Francesco Yates who becomes known to a broader European audience due to its appearance on new no.1 single Sugar. The singer is the first Canadian occupying the top spot since Nelly Furtado in early 2009.

Rising two further places MoTrip feat. Lary stops at #3 with So wie du bist. Another hip hop act stops at #6.Namika enters the top 10 with her debut single Lieblingsmensch in its fourth chart week. The album Nador started a week ago at #13 and now slides to #17, the single still gains more airplay and so it does on the singles list.

Kind of a surprise takes place at #10. Four years after its forming on X Factor Britain boy group One Direction becomes a top 10 act with its single Drag Me Down. It is the 14th proper chart entry in Germany. So far they only once sneaked into the top 20 in August 2013 with Best Song Ever. The career looks quite unusual. Ending as third on the casting show they immediately became stars in their home countries Ireland and Britain. Four resp. three #1 aingle hits plus same amount on the albums list make the band an impressive evident of how the boy group formula still works in the 2010s. Even the USAmerican market celebrates the boys. In Germany they are a phenomenon not very recognized by the mainstream so far. With the first proper hit single and a new album it might change. So One Direction is also an example how careers change in times of social media–even on the highly planned casting market.

The pure social media stars themselves get much more attention on mainstream but the commercial success on the sales charts still is not that big. At least duo Die Lochis has its highest chart entry this week with Ab geht's starting at #29. So far all hits of the duo disappeared latest after two weeks on the survey.

Tracks rising
How Deep Is Your Love by Calvin Harris + Disciples 22–17 in its third chart week
Sun Is Shining by Axwell Ingrosso 99–51 in its second week

On #97 there is a song entering the list that is 16 years old. Learn To Fly by the Foo Fighters was the most successful single of the band on the US billboard charts. In Europe there were other songs having the sympathy and love of the music buyers. Well–due to an action initiated by an Italian musician the song now charts for the very first time in Germany. The version of Rockin' 1000 Italian musicians quite is as much good as the original and worth of getting an chart entry. So far only the Foo Fighters version had that chance.
Finally here it is what the action was about: To please the band for a concert in Cesena, Italy. Can someone stand such a strong performance?

All in all there are nine tracks entering the list for the very first time. This is a very median figure. More unusual is the fact we have no re-entry. In 2015 this happened only once before on February 27th. In 2014 there were only two weeks too: May 16th and May 23rd.

June 19th 15:

Well Ain't Nobody (Loves Me Better) holds firm at no.1 and now is the longest running no.1 track in 2015. Last song spending seven weeks at the top was lovers on the sun by David Guetta feat. Sam Martin in late summer 2014.
Felix Jaehn–producer of current no.1–also now is the artist collecting most no.1 weeks in 2015 followed by Ellie Goulding and partner Jasmine Thompson who both so far count seven weeks.

KYGO climbs one further place to #2 with his new hit Stole The Show and now becomes the most successful Norwegian act since Marit Larsen occupied no.1 for five weeks with If A Song Could Get Me You in August and September 2009.

supergirl by Anna Naklab feat. Alle Farben & YouNotUs enters the top 5 in its 10th chart week. The cover of the Reamonn hit from 2000 stops one short to its original peak at #4. It is already the second top 10 entry for German DJ Alle Farben who debuted a year ago with She Moves - Far Away by peaking at #9.

Highest new entry is the winning song of fifth episode of Sing meinen Song aired on June 16th. Wirtz lands his version on Wenn sie diesen Tango hört originally recorded by PUR but never released as a single on #14. It is three ranks better than Yvonne Catterfeld did last week and so the peak so far this year. 2014 season saw Sarah Connor flying to #12 with her version on Keine ist wie du–that's the all over peak of songs recorded for the TV show so far.

KC Rebell's fifth album Fata Morgana was released and directly flies to #1. The success also propells some single tracks into the list. Best selling of all Bist du real (feat. Moé) which lands at number 15 and gives the rapper his highest peak so far. Additionally there is Augenblick (Feat. Summer Cem) at #71.

German productions are very visible inside the survey. We do have 5 German productions inside the top 10 plus 5 further down to #20. All in all there 30 productions with German artists inside the list.

A last gimmick at the end. Royal weddings are pop. As on the ceremony of Prince Carl Philipp of Sweden and Sofia a singer staged with Fix You the original by Coldplay enters the list at number 89 again.

20th of Feb 15: First Straight No1 of 2015

The fast change of number 1s continues. This recent week we do have a new one again–a brand new additionally. It is Ellie Goulding who rockets straight to the top with her contribution to the Fifty Shades Of Grey soundtrack. The song in question is Love Me Like You Do.
It is this the sixth number 1 song in 2015 and the second for the singer. A month ago she achieved the top for the first time alongside with Calvin Harris on the track Outside. The success back than took only a single week.

Some statistics for Ellie Goulding: Last female artist having two number 1s in the same calendar year was Lady Gaga in 2009. It was her record breaking Poker Face that occupied the top spot for 13 weeks followed four months later by her Paparazzi. The latter one only flashed for a week at the top.

As I mentioned before Love Me Like You Do is the first straight number 1 of the year. It is quite early having this situation. Usually it takes at least till March or April when the TV superstars are chosen that a single rockets straight to the top. The last early nr.1 shooter came in January 2009 when James Morrisson & Nelly Furtado duetted on Broken Strings. That recording held firm there for five consecutive weeks.

A full bunch of six different tracks appearing at number 1 by 20th of February never before took place in chart history. So we are on a good way to fight the record of most number 1 tracks in one calendar year that was set in 2001 with full 23 different songs. Well–it is still a long way to go for that and next week can already change a lot…

17th of January 2014: Happy goes No.1

The new year’s laziness is gone: Germany has got a new No.1. And what kind of. Like in half of the world Pharrell WilliamsHappy goes to the Top here also. Within eight months Pharrell is listed at the very top for the third time. Such a feat was last seen in 2009/10 when Lady Gaga had three Nr.1 hits within seven months. These three Top hits charted consecutively – so he follows directly the series of hits launched by German Tokio Hotel in 2006/07.

Reaching the Top by climbing 8 places sounds quite spectacular. The books will tell you that only one year and three months ago another song did so. It was famous Gangnam Style by Korean PSY. That track surprisingly had a mere three-weeks-career at the Top although the time span strains over three complete months.

At number 3 Ed Sheeran comes in with his song for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug’s end title. Five million people watched the movie in Germany alone – no surprise I See Fire also becomes a hit.

The brilliant Of the Night re-recorded by BASTILLE slowly takes fire and goes 52–26 which gives the band its third Top40 hit within 9 months. The song ultimately is one of the better words spoken in the 90s revival. Probably that period will finally fade away.

Gangster Rap–especially coming from Germany–still has a market here. Next generations star Farid Bang starts his new single Bitte Spitte Toi Bang at number 32 as the highest new entry. It is the second highest entry for him since he appeared first in the list around two years ago. Though none of his tracks spent more than two weeks inside the charts. So it is still a narrow scenery that adores him.

The US-American version of a young rap hope is Kid Ink. Right now he gots some more attention in Germany too. His album My Own Lane enters the album list right at number 12 in its first week. So three different tracks sneak in the list right now the highest stopping at number 36 in the face of Show Me–the absolut peak for the young artist in Germany. MTV featured him on its Push serial at the very beginning of the year. Well-this guy must be taken as an upcoming record star for sure.

German Revolverheld heavily promotes its new single Ich lass für dich das Licht an by launching a Story of the video clip. It's about the proposal of one of the band members to his long year girlfriend. The very romantic story touches a lot of people, so the song already jumps 90–38 without having the video released (13th of January) and a month before the new single mixes are released.

Romance is a big topic under Germany's youth. Sido's last album is full with lyrics of its kind. One of the most obvious is Liebe which reaches number 43 this week which is the best result for that track so far.

Featured by the 30th anniversary of TV channel RTL British singer Rebecca Ferguson whitnesses the hiatus of her career in Germany so far by Light On landing at number 40. It isn't the real breakthrough for sure.

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis already have their fourth hit entering the upper half of the German charts. White Walls climbs to number 41 in its second chart week.

At the lower end of the charts first signs of upcoming Après Ski season are significant. The official start has taken place on prime time TV at Sat.1 on Januar 7th with a big show. One of the hits of the season for sure is Rock Mi by Bavarian voXXclub. The song actually rises 82–62 in its 12th chart week. It already reached number 44 back in October.

This current week is the third consecutive week that BEYONCÉ can enter with a new track. This time it is XO that lands at number 83. All three tracks sneaked around that area and disappeared after a single week. Real hits look different I guess.

Hot Spot 09-20-13

AVICII still delivers the most selling single of the week. Wake Me Up! now holds the 10th week firm at the Top. Last track doing so was Rihanna's Diamonds at the tail end of 2012 meaning Wake Me Up! right now is the longest standing Nr.1 of the year. Technically it still can be dethroned, but well … do you believe in miracles?

AVICII not only rewrites the history of the year 2013 – he also approaches the history of Swedish pop music. With 10 weeks on Top in Germany Wake Me Up! is the longest standing No.1 hit coming from Sweden since 19 years. In November 1994 Cotton Eye Joe by the Rednex landed at the Top and hold there for exactly 10 weeks. As far as I know never before a Swedish production performed more successful.

Martin Garrix now hits the Top 10 – his track Animals lands at number 8 this current week.

After released on CD We Can't Stop by Miley Cyrus gets a sales boost and jumps 39–16 in its 14th chart week. With that she reaches a new peak in her whole career. So far 7 Things from 2008 was her highest climbing single stopped at number 17. Upcoming single Wrecking Ball also takes a leap landing at number 25 this week.

Belgian stromae does have a second Top10 hit in Germany with Papaoutai that sits pretty at number 7. His breakthrough track alors on danse also gains some new attention and re-enters at number 72 this current week. It is the highest ranking the track can achieve since January 2011.

A last gossip story: Discobitch is back with its hit C'est beau la bourgeoisie after the track is used in a commercial spot for the new Citroen DS3. In 2009 the recording made it up to number 61 in Germany.

HotSpot 08-23-13

AVICII still is number 1 with Wake Me Up. It is the sixth week for the song holding firm at the top. In terms of weeks at number 1 Wake Me Up is now the second most successful track of the year right behind will.i.am's & Britney's Scream & Shout that had a 9 weeks run at the top in the beginning of 2013.
For all who loves statistic facts: the track now is the most successive Swedish production since late 2004 when Eric Prydz had a 6 weeks stay at number 1 with Call On Me.

German comedian trio Y-Titty launches its first Top 10 hit with Halt dein Maul entering the charts at number 5. It is the teasing song to its upcoming album Stricksocken Swagger. It is almost a given thing that we will see the trio invading the list in three weeks time.

11-12: Hammer Hits?

Nooossaa! Ai Se Eu Te Pego! now is statistically the second most successful hit from the South American continent. By spending a seventh week at the Top Michel Teló’s song ranges right behind Shakira’s Whenever wherever that held a whole 11 weeks at Number 1 in springtime 2002.

The highest new entry this week again is a German one. After two casting show finalists and UNHEILIG’s next success it is now a veteran band that hits the Top 3. die ärzte exist for almost 30 years–they’re chart career spans over the past 25 years. Last time they appeared in the list it was the fourth single from their Number 1 album Jazz ist anders (Jazz Is Different) in late 2009. zeiDverschwÄndung (Waste Of Time) is the first regular offering of new material in the recent decade. By entering at number 3 it extends the span of Top 10 hits to a third decade but it is only their 10th hit reaching the Top 10.

The song itself is self ironically as the best songs of die ärzte. The three really ask “Isn’t it a waste of time being fan of die ärzte?” The answer is clear also: “It isn’t. There’s nothing better to do than adoring the band.”

DSDS Impact
Besides that new entry the chart is completely boring. The only significant chart moves are caused by TV casting Deutschland sucht den Superstar (DSDS). On Saturday, 2nd March the first themed show was aired. Hammerhits (Literally: Hammer Hits meaning of course Super Hits) were announced and it started with a Number 6 hit of real superstar Taio Cruz. He performed with all 10 candidates Troublemaker which gives the underperforming track a slight push back to number 16 in it’s 13th week. The big hammer hit is probably something else.

The great star of the show was this time Fabienne Rothe. She performed Wovon sollen wir träumen the recent hit for German Frida Gold and earned the highest votes of the audience. In the singles charts the original recording takes a leap 77–44 in its 49th chart week. Again the song is a hit but far and away from something to be called hammer like. – Also Silvia Amaru found her fans. With Domino she managed to get voted into the next show (where she had to leave) and propells the original by Jessi J back 87–54.

The romantic guy Jesse Ritch performed another rap ballad: So Sick originally the first hit for ne-yo reaching number 11 in 2006. It gets back at number 91. So far the story of what DSDS calls the most hammering hits.

The sport event of the weekend of 3rd March was the fight Klitchko vs. Mormeck. Some boxing fans told me the French man could have had fight the Ukrainian champion. Well, when I was watching the fight it never seemed so in any second. A musical traces left by the spectacle is the re-appearance of Klitchko’s entrance anthem: Can’t Stop by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Last time it swashed in the list the track gained its highest position ever. Now the charm of the tune is faded a bit–it lands at number 60 which still is the third highest position for the recording.

A last note besides at the end of this weeks column: with Stefanie Heinzmann climbing to number 20 we have two Swiss productions inside the German Top 20 which doubles the situation of last years September. Back than DJ Antoine and Mike Candys were the lucky acts. A few weeks later in November we had a whole five Swiss productions inside the German Top 100. This week they are still four. The small country right now establishes itself as a quarry of sucessful music. Just have a look at the origin of DSDS contestants …

New German Rap Star: Casper

Mr. Saxobeat now is one of three tracks in 2011 that had a six weeks run at the top of the German single’s charts. But it is the first track counting six consecutive weeks at the Top in 2011. Both others – grenade by Bruno Mars and On The Floor by JLO feat. Pitbull – had a break in between. Question right now is: will Alexandra Stan keep seeling most copies the next week too?

A real rival is not seen anywhere. Well – the iTunes chart of today list a new David Guetta release at number 3: Titanium – that’s it. Physical sales see Tim Bendzko still at position 2 and Lucenzo feat. Don Omar at position 3.

Newcomer of the week is German rapper Casper. Three weeks ago his second album XOXO stormed to Number 1 at the album charts. This week the single So Perfekt follows and can enter at position 14. The hard core scene around Bushido and Co. critizices Casper cause his sound is much more a fusion of indie pop and hiphop. In other countries such a crossover melange is common for years. In Germany it still ranks as a novum. An almost established one of course as the high start of Casper’s single tells us.

The story of So Perfekt is about finding the perfect moment in life (and the perfect life) even if life is sometimes hard or unfair. The lyrics are full of optimism – quite an attitude hard to find in German hiphop. Probably that’s a reason why people like the track (and the artist) that much.

chart flash 11-24: LMFAO and an omnipresent Pitbull

Finally the Europe wide hit Party Rockl Anthem also enters the number 1 in Germany. US American electro duo LMFAO already had the top spot in Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France,Ireland, Switzerland and in the UK (see statistics at acharts.us) – the world charts see them rising to number 3. It took the project six week to get on top – that’s not really unusual. The last track taking more than a month for climbing to Germany’s best sold single was The Time (Dirty Bit) by The Black Eyed Peas that set Germany under fire at the very beginning of the recent year.

It is the very first number 1 hit for LMFAO in German speaking area. They first appear exactly one year ago alongside David Guetta, Chris Willis & Fergie whit the track Gettin’ Over You that spent 27 weeks in the German list climbing up to number 15. In Austria it went to number 4 – the UK saw them shooting to number 1 for the very first time. In 2011 the so far hiatus of their career seems achieved. Follow up single Champagne Showers right now arrived in the UK list – all I can say the mood for another electro smash summer hit by LMFAO seems very likely.

Another steadily rising strong electro hit arrives at number 2 with Give Me Everything – the track presented by all star collaboration Pitbull feat. NE-Yo, Afrojack & Nayer. It is the 7th week for the track in the German list. Will it rise a place further next week?
Pitbull also occupies number 3 alongside JLO. On The Floor spends its 13th week inside the Top 10 and we can name it for sure as one of the big hits of this year.

Pitbull once again: He also appears newly in the chart at Shakira’s latest single Rabiosa where he is featured. Number 26 for the seventh track charting in 2011 with at least a guest appearance of the Cuban-American rap star.

Rising to number 4 Alexandra Stan with Mr. Saxobeat equals the result of fellow countryman Edward Maya from last year. For the first time in German pop history two years in a row see at least one Top 10 hit coming from an Romanian artist. Maybe we have to watch that country as a deliverer of summer dance pop for the next time.

Highest new entry this week is San Francisco the new single of cascada released as a teaser for follow up album Original Me. It is the well known mixture of dance pop – a new tone is the very clear voice of Natalie Horler sothat one really can follow the lyrics. (which is not necessary anyway – bubbly dance pop dream with a reference to the good old times of 1969 ... did we had eurodance music then?)

One last story for today. Recent superstar Pietro Lombardi now tumbles down in the official sales charts also. Call My Name stops at number 7 coming from the top – it is the deepest fall from number 1 since Tokio Hotel touched down to number 7 with Übers Ende der Welt in February 2007. The album chart lists Pietro Lombardi still at number 1 – so all fans of casting pop might be calmed down. The world still turns the right way.

chart flash 11-23: Why is Pietro Lombardi still at the top?

We’re facing an absolutely bizarre situation. Although superstar Pietro Lombardi doesn’t play any significant role neither in airplay nor in digital sales charts (iTunes: nr.10 on Fr 27th of May; number 18 on Thu 2nd of June; amazon digital number 12; musicload sees number 10; mp3.saturn sees also number 10) and even the physical sales at amazon only list a number 112 – but media control reports today having his debut single Call My Name at number 1 for the fourth time. The Swiss charts recently are doubted of compiled regularly. What’s about the German ones. Do they really reflect consumption within Germany? Well – there is that speciality of media control’s official German charts. They list not thwe most sold tracks but the tracks that gained most amount of money – so cheaper mp3s/Cds count less than the ones much more expensive.

Anyway: Pietro Lombardi is only the fourth super star winner who can get a four weeks run at the top. If not freshly released Jedward single or the new track of Shakira feat. Pitbull have the power of shooting to number 1 Pietro does have the real chance of getting the superstar with the longest stay at the German top. The recent iTunes list is promising exactly that. Let’s just wait another week...
Having the five weeks run of On The Floor followed by Call My Name for four weeks we now face a situation last seen in summer 2010 when Waka Waka (This Time For Africa) had a six weeks run followed by We No Speak Americano that occupied the top spot for seven weeks.

Highest new entry of the week is The Lazy Song offered by Bruno Mars. It is his third top 10 single in a row – all charted within the past eight months. Bruno Mars also is the one and only act having three Top 10 hits in 2011 so far. With 22 weeks inside the top 10 he is far and away the best performing act so far this year. The Lazy Song actually starts at number 9.

Best new German track is Nur noch kurz die Welt retten (Just have to save the world). It is – again – a new comer who offered the song. Tim Bendzko later this month releases his debut album titled Wenn Worte meine Sprache wären (If I had words to speak/communicate) – for sure this debut will made a strong impact in the charts.

week 11-11: The new digital aera arrives

Oops – never think the music market is a boring and predictable thing. A week ago I was telling you that Bruno Mars will for sure be #1 this week again … two days ago the chart compiling institute media control announced in an extra press release a completely different story. We do have a new #1. Not only a new #1 but a #1 by digital sales only for the very first time. The artist gaining this record is Lady Gaga . Her recent track Born This Way is rising four places to the top spot in its fourth chart week after the release of the video on 2nd March in Germany (the US premiere was on 28th February). One could say MTV and the whole music television is dead – video aint. The public interest around the visual translation of the track was huge, supported by a lot of media hype. For German music companies this is a lesson: music clips are important for selling records (or music files). Hopefully the big ones now stop their stupid policy of avoiding platforms like youtube et al.

Born This Way is Lady Gaga’s fourth #1. She is the second act in this still fresh year having its fourth top hit. The Black Eyed Peas did so at the very beginning with their offering The Time (Dirty Bit). Lady Gaga might not be the first one doing so this year, but she is one of the fastest. Exactly two years ago she entered the top position for the first time with Poker Face. The last act having four #1 hits within two years was German Tokio Hotel. They needed 1 year and 5 months. Tokio Hotel also was the last act having #1 hits in three consecutive years – this feat now is matched by La Gaga.

Funny trivia beside this: Lady Gaga is the third act in a row reaching the top position in the 4th chart week. Incident or a new rule?

The week 4th to 10th March which is the actual period for the recent chart was a week of change. The second climber up to #3 comes from Finnish Sunrise Ave. Their hollywood hills finally reach the top positions now matching their success in early 2007 Fairytale Gone Bad.

Ulrike Altig of media control said due to the new digital #1: „There is a new aera beginning.“ She’s absolutely right. And finally the German companies recognise this. UNIVERSAL – one of the real big ones – tried out for the first time releasing the digital release a full month before the CD release is scheduled with the new Enrique Iglesias track Tonight (I’m Loving You). The effect: Enrique Iglesias feat. Ludacris & DJ Frank E does have the highest new entry in the German charts. The track is rising up to #12 by donwload sales only. The full physical release comes on 1st April. It is the second euro dance release by Enrique. As the predecessor I Like You the new one enters at #12 – and I guess we will have the track soon inside the Top 10.

The best new entry with a full physical release comes from USHER whose MORE enters the list at #17. After his big hit DJ Got Us Falling In Love which climbed up to #5 this track has kind of a low start.

And finally for now another „new aera“ entry. Gossip lead singer Beth Ditto released a solo EP. As a single cut one could download track number four I Wrote The Book which enters the list at #30. The holy new aera – in other countries tit began almost three or four years ago. Germany doesn’t seem to be the most innovative country right now.

The Real Christmas Charts

The most recent press text launched by media control tries to give the feeling of unbelievable and astonishing chart entries in the sales week direct before Christmas (17th to 23rd of December). But there is no real news. Instead I could repeat the flashlight look from one week before. Highest new entry in the singles and the album list is Freddy Sahin-Scholl winner of Germany's edition of Germany Got Talent. Highest new entry sounds very well - look a bit closer no. 17 for album Carpe Diem and no.56 for same titled single … in other weeks of the year this would be an entry almost not recognized at all. Spoken more precise no.56 is the lowest "highest new entry" of the whole year 2010. Even new year's day offering New Day by Max Mutzke did better with entering no.40. Well there was a list in 2010 with no NEW entry. The charts of 8th of January saw only re-entries. Best one here were Sportfreunde Stiller with Ein Kompliment re-appearing at 41.
So Freddy Sahin-Scholl has one of the lowest highest new entries ever in chart history matching Sean Kingston's Fire Burning at 24th of July 2009.

Lazy German music buyers!

No wonder also the top 3 is completely static. Israel IZ Kamakawiwo'olespends its 12th week at the top with Over The Rainbow. Last male solo artist doing so was techno act U96 (aka Alex Christensen) which spended 13 weeks at the top with Das Boot from January to April 1991. Last single with at least 12 weeks at no.1 still is POker Face offered by Lady Gaga 2009.
