- Still at #1: Kay One & Pietro Lombardi with Señorita. It is the first song in German since EFF's Stimme in January 2016 that can at least spend a fortnight at the top.
- With spending a 26th week inside the top 10 Despacito now is the longest running top 10 hit 2017 overtaking Ed Sheeran's Shape Of You from the beginning of the year. Despacita now also ranks as the second longest running top 10 hit of this decade. Indeed Atemlos durch die Nacht by Helene Fischer is still far and away with 34 weeks inside the top 10.
Having a look at the all time long runners Despacito has still some work to do. It only ranks at position 11 of all top 10 hits since the beginning of the charts in 1954.

Sep 15th 17: Kay One & Pietro At No.1
- Kay One & Pietro Lombardi goes straight to #12 with Señorita; it is the second straight #1 this year but the first German since Prince Damien shot to the top with Glücksmoment back in May 2016; after more than six years it is the second chart topper for Pietro Lombardi; Kay One almost had 10 years to go for the chart crown, his first chart entry dates back to December 2007 when he made his debut alongside Bushido and Chakuza
Labels:
KAY ONE,
Pietro Lombardi,
straight no.1
September 4th 15: Namika goes no.1
Namika is the third German act in a row that reaches the top spot. It is this a similar situation as in early summer 2014 when Andreas Bourani, Aneta Sablik, CRO and Robin Schulz (alongside Lilli Wood & The Prick) had a continous run there. As actually Aneta Sablik is a Polish singer casted on a German TV show with a German producer–one might argue whether this period count for Germany. The last female German by pasport on the top of the German singles charts was Lena Meyer-Landruth with her Eurovision winning Satellite in June 2010.
Highest new entry comes in at #4 in the face of Justin Bieber. What Do You Mean? is only the third top10 hit and the highest charting song ever for the singer. And he is besides Francesco Yates (#3) the second Canadian inside the Top 10–a feat last seen in May 2012 when Carly Rae Jepsen and Simple Plan had simoultaneous hits.
In its 17th chart week Photograph by Ed Sheeran reaches a new peak at #5 and gives the singer his second biggest chart entry to date.
New inside the top 10 El Perdón by Nicky Jam & Enrique Iglesias is. It is the the eighth top 10 entry for Mr. Iglesias and his first since 2010.
Hot Spot 04-05-13
Passenger holds firm at the Top a third week with Let Her Go. Following the 9 weeks run of Scream & Shout we have a similar situation at the top like last summer when Reckoning Song / One Day by Asaf Avidan / Wankelmut followed with a 6 weeks run at the Top to Lykke Li’s I Follow Rivers that spent five weeks at number 1.
P!NK launches her sixth consecutive Top 10 single in Germany with Just Give Me A Reason. The one who managed that last was French DJ David Guetta in 2011/12.
Propelled by the release of the album Native the current OneRepublic single If I Lose Myself returns to the Top 10. It lands at number 6 reaching a new peak while the album stops at number 4 which is a new peak of the whole album career of the band.
Also with freshly released album band Silly founded 1978 sees its single Deine Stärken enter the Top 20. It is the first time that a song of the band can reach that region. Additionally they performed the song at the ECHO award ceremony on March 21st.
The ceremony aired on TV turned out to be a big sales promoter. Big winner became unsurprisingly a band that celebrated its 30th anniversary last year. Die Toten Hosen got four awards including the one as best band national, for best hit and best album. At the show they performed with Hannes Wader. As an effect new single Draussen Vor Der Tür enters at number 20 and their known hitsAltes Fieber and even Tage wie diese return to the Top 50.
Other effects can be witnessed as following: SEEEd reaches the list with Deine Zeit at number 70 after their performance. The song is released as full single also. New single release of Peter Plate–singer of Rosenstolz–named Wir beide sind Musik (We two are music) got support by the performance at the show. It is the second comeback of the singer after taking a break for health reasons but the first time he appears as a solo artist. / Santiano performed its song Es gibt nur Wasser (There is only water)–the track not released as a proper single enters the charts as an album cut. / Finally rapper CRO's first hit Easy dips into the list again at number 97.
Another big TV event is seasonal issue of Deutschland sucht den Superstar (DSDS). It now approaches the more intense phase. In the second live show participant Ricardo Bielecki turned out to be the most impressive singer. His version of Impossible (originally recorded by Shontelle) caused a run on the latest version by British X Factor winner James Arthur which made that recording shoot to number 8 in Germany. He is only the third European act inside the Top 10–a situation not witnessed for a several years.
The big show act of the DSDS issue on March 23rd was the winner pair of 2011Sarah & Pietro. In comparison to the upcoming stars the old ones failed completely. Their new single Dream Team only can rise to number 41.For both the worst appearance of a single released by them ever.
Further performances causing a boost in sales of older singles: the youngest of the candidates Erwin Kintop performed Won’t Let You Go–the original by James Morrison returns to number 51. In January the song already had a two weeks run after Tim David performed the song in the same show.
Beatrice Egli sang ich will immer wieder … dieses fieber spür’n which brings the original by Helene Fischer after three and a half year back to the list. By peaking at number 30 it is Helene Fischer’s most successful hit.
The release of some new remixes of Play Hard by Albert Neve, Maurizio Gubellini & Spencer & Hill brings David Guetta feat. NE-YO & Akon back to the list. They re-enter number 35–the highest position since the track first appeared in the survey in past September.
The third week inside the list Nelly’s Hey Porsche enters the Top 50. How far will it finally go?
After 18 years of absence from the charts Roland Kaiser returns with the title track to a Tatort aired on March 24th. Egoist is the 24th chart track of the artist. His career now spawns about more than 36 years.
After it is released on the new BRAVO black hits compilation Lost by Frank Ocean can enter the list for the very first time. It is the very first chart entry for the US rapper in Germany.
In Britain Clown is the latest official single from Emeli Sandé’s album Our Version Of Events–it is the sixth official single. Now also in Germany the demand on this track starts. It enters the list as an album cut at number 93. Additionaly Emeli Sandé could be soon become the artist with most appearances in the charts in 2013–she by now collected 35 chart entries in 2013 alone. Only German rapper CRO has four entries more.

2011 – That Was The Chart Year
No surprise at the top of the singles list of the year 2011: On The Floor recorded by JLO feat. Pitbull is the most sold single of the past twelve months. The single was five weeks at number one in April and May strongly promoted due to the fact that it was the opening song for one of the live shows of Deutschland sucht den Superstar (Germany’s Idols). After Jennifer Lopez’ performance at Wetten dass…? (Bet that…) in June the song rebounded for a single week to the top spot after a six weeks break. The song so far spent 41 weeks inside the German charts, 25 of them in the Top 10 – it sneaks at number 72 still in the last issue of the year. It is far and away JLO’s most successful song in Germany and her very first number 1 hit after an almost 12 years long chart career.
JLO is the single queen – at the albums list we do have another female star. It is of course Adele and her album 21. The most successful single taken from it was Rolling In The Deep which also was one of the most significant songs of the year listed at number 4 in the 2011 survey. The song spent 51 weeks inside the charts – that’s only one week less than the whole year – and it held two weeks the number one spot in February, dethroned by Bruno Mars and his grenade (number 3 in 2011).
We did have 15 different number 1 songs – that’s two more than the year before but the same amount as in 2009 and 2008. So we could call the year a very usual one.
The longest number 1 runner was New Age by Marlon Roudette. 8 weeks – the complete September and October – the track was the most sold one in Germany. Number 6 in the survey of the year. The artist is back at the top after a 5 years break. In 2006 he had a number 1 hit with his project Mattafix.
Three acts reached the Top for the fourth time: The Black Eyed Peas with The Time (Dirty Bit) (number 36) – and they now had number one hits over a seven years span –, Lady Gaga with Born This Way (number 17) and Rihanna with We Found Love (number 13).
The longest way to number 1 had Danza Kuduro by Lucenzo feat. Don Omar which took full two months to reach the top.
Leaving number 1 territory we truly can describe a battle between a DJ and a rapper for being the most active act of the year. Seeing Cuban-USAmerican rapper Pitbull at the top of the singles list reflects the presence of this artist in 2011. He collected 168 chart entries over the whole year making him only the second most present artist in 2011. The real king in terms of chart weeks is – you already know it – French DJ David Guetta. He appeared 216 times with 16 different tracks in the list. The most successfull week was the issue from September 9th, when he had nine different tracks in the survey. It was the week when his album Nothing But The beat was released. His most successful single hit according to sales figures was Sweat – the rework of Snoop Dogg’s recording Wet – that is listed at number 7 in the list of the year. The track occupied number 2 for four weeks in April /May and missed the top cause JLO & Pitbull sticked there. In 2011 David Guetta had 5 more tracks reaching the Top 10 – 4 of them in a row – giving him 39 Top 10 weeks, what is NOT the best result in 2011. Again Pitbull is the one beating him out with 45 weeks inside the Top 10.
Overshadowed by that battle and the two very strong ladies the most active female star of the year misses the really big headline. Rihanna had 8 hits in 2011, 5 of them top ten, she appeared full 151 weeks inside the list. In every other chart year she would be celebrated as the queen.
Another act that growed in the shadow is Flo Rida. In 2011 he launched four Top 10 hits finally reaching number 1 with Good Feeeling at the end of the year. I guess he will be one of the big names in 2012 too.
The most successful newcomer is a casted star: Pietro Lombardi had three single hits this year, his debut Call My Name shot straight to number 1 and spent four weeks there (number 5 in the year’s survey) before tumbling down to number 7. The appearance of his latest release Goin’ To L.A. gives the impression that his star is already sinking. But first the look back: Pietro Lombardi has the honour of being the best sold German act. In the survey follows Tim Bendzko with Nur noch kurz die Welt retten (number 10) and Jupiter Jones with Still (number 20).
Finally some trivias: There are two songs in 2011 that spent more than 40 weeks inside the charts in different versions. It is Waka Waka – the anthem of the 2010 world championship – which was available as a single by Shakira and in a German version by Spongebob. The song ranked still at number 33 in 2011. Probably more present was Hello by Martin Solveig and Dragonette which ranked at number 5 at the beginning of the year and had a cover version inside the charts recorded by Berlin band The Baseballs.
A chart record was set by Paul & Fritz Kalkbrenner when their Sky And Sand reached its peak at number 29 on November 11th – in its 83rd chart week. Another long time benchmark was set in the very last week of the year when Happy Xmas (War Is Over) by John Lennon & Yoko Ono with the Plastic Ono Band and the Harlem Community Choir reappeared in the list. The song was noted for the first time in February 1973 and now has an almost 39 years chart run reaching position 46 as the highest.
The act having the longest chart career of all present in 2011 is Mama Africa Miriam Makeba. She came to new chart life due to a remix of her hit Pata Pata from 1968 by Milk&Sugar. The single spent eight weeks in the list rising to number 33. Miriam Makeba now was present in the German charts for 43 and a half year. Talking ’bout come backs in 2011 I have to mention Eva Jacob who had her last chart entry in 1965 with the Andrew Sisters. 45 and a half years later she was part of the Dschungel Allstars 2011 that had a short stop alongside Zipfelbuben in February 2011. So technically she holds the record of being absent from the charts for the longest time.
Although 2011 was the least successful year for German SCOOTER the band is right now the act with the longest continuity of hits. 2011 was their18th year in a row releasing at least one chart hit. All time leader Peter Alexander still is far and away with 29 consecutive years.
Least successful acts: Peter Maffay – who really played a sad (and naive) role around the Bushido/BAMBI discussion – added this year two singles to his impressive collection of 47 chart hits, although the past 23 did not cross posiiton 25 – the last time he was seen higher was in 1983 with Nessaja.
To mention also the duo Eichensohn/Davenstedt that spent a single week at number 100 with the track FFF.
JLO is the single queen – at the albums list we do have another female star. It is of course Adele and her album 21. Upspeeding Charts With A Small Swiss Invasion
The Christmas rush started. The industry is releasing new material and the audience is buying. The German single’s charts dated November 25th counts 15 new entries. It is the biggest turnover of the list with completely new material. Of course we saw the two first weeks in March 21 resp. 20 tracks entering the charts – back than 10 resp. 6 of that tracks were re-entries. This recent week we do have 15 completely new tracks entering the list. The last time that happened was in February 2010 – almost 2 years ago. So the charts are speeding up right now. Of course there is a lot to tell you about – let’s start right at the top.
With a huge jump Flo Rida enters the number one with his new single Good Feeling. It is the 6th number 1 hit coming fromm an U.S. act in 2011. The states do rule the German (and European) music market. Even after an unusual four month break during late summer nothing really changed. Flo Rida is displacing Rihanna and it’s quite significant that Good Feeling also features an European producer. It is actually Swedish AVICII (Tim Bergling) who milked the formula used for his own Levels once again. It gives both rapper and producer the first ever Number 1 in Germany. Flo Rida took three and a half years reaching the top. It’s a way some others had gone before, however it is far and away from the very common career of storming the top within the first year with one of the first three singles of an act. It took Flo Rida a full 13 singles to get that much interest. He first appeared within the German charts with Low (featuring T-Pain) in 2007. Two years later he had his first big hit with Right Round (featuring Ke$ha). The big boost came late 2010 when his single Club Can’t Handle Me (produced by David Guetta) went number 4. Since then three singles were released crediting him as a performing artist. All three went Top 10. Now Good Feeling as the leading single to his upcoming album Only One Rida (Part 2) is breaking all walls. By climbing to number 1 Flo Rida is definitely one of the big male U.S. stars of now. Only Taio Cruz is someone who has similar popularity right now.
The highest new German release enters the list at position 5. It is the recent single of Rammstein lifted from their upcoming Best of album Made In Germany 1995-2011. As always the track is controversial, ironical and disambiguitive. The title Mein Land (My Country) refers to a strong self-assertion on one hand and to really right wing nationalism on the other hand. As always the band identifies itself as unpolitical – the video by Jonas Åkerlund is a comic strip on a 60s beach party. Trying to encode the signs and quotes leads nowhere. It is an empty style using a lot of clichees – it’s your own turn to love or hate it.
Usually the hits of Rammstein only spend some few weeks in the charts. Certainly also Mein Land will leave the list before the change of years.
Maybe we will see the new song from Pietro Lombardi a few weeks longer. Goin’ To L.A. is only the third single and it is completely new material – however the track misses the top 20. Is the career of the 2011 superstar over after only six months? Well – all the teenies and casting addictives are waiting for the winner of the Supertalent show. No need for stars of the springtime at all.
Another participant of the DSDS casting in springtime finally starts a career by releasing singles. Ardian Bujupi – the number 3 although he was far and away the best performer of the crowd – appears with This Is My Time. It is teen pop as well however it surprises by using strongly dancehall beats and effects. In terms of music this single is the most interesting a contestant of the last DSDS season had released. In terms of sales he unfortunately fails by only reaching position 40. Hopefully he himself does have enough strength for releasing further material. He really might become a popstar.
There is a next casting format starting on German TV. The Voice of Germany differs the most by the choice of the jury. Besides Nena, Xavier Naidoo and Rea Garvey the two front men of German country band BossHoss try to find the most amazing voice. Possibly they are the most unknown inside the show – they never had a commercial hit single although their five albums all reached the upper ranks at the album charts – only the first one missed narrowly the Top 10.
A week before the show starts on TV the band releases a new single. Don’t Gimme That immediately enters position 42. It is so far the second highest rank the band ever reached missing the result of the very first single Hey Ya! by only one place.
Let’s switch from an upcoming TV event to a past one. On November 10th the ceremony of the BAMBI awards took place. Once upon a time it was the most important German award in media and music business. Meanwhile there are doubts ’bout the importance of this „event“. The well planned scandal of this year’s BAMBI was the decoration of rapper Bushido with the award for integration.
The relevance of the award to music business shows up with sales right after the show. As an effect of her performance at the show (plus decoration with the price as Best international Artist) Lady Gagas new single Marry The Night enters at a low position 44. – Gagamania seems kind of cooled down. The lady is on tour in Europe to promote her new single and fails even in Britain (#18 after a performance at an X Factor result show !!) Well, it is the fifth single from her Born This Way album. Almost everybody owns a copy, isn’t it? – The full CD single release of Marry The Night is scheduled for 2nd December. The prospects of becoming a huge hit are very small.
Somewhat like an comeback can be witnessed at position 45. Singer Christian Franke had a hit in 1982 with Ich wünsch dir die Hölle auf Erden (I Wish You To Hell). Two follow up medium hit singles were released in 1982 and than a long silence broke down around him. In 2009 a short appearance back in the list with new material and now – again 2 years later – it seems the singer is back for real. Der Apfelbaum (The Apple Tree) is a kitschy ballad asking why people do all the bad things on earth: nuclear weapons, wars, environmental pollution, injustice ... The video shows star actor Heiner Lauterbach trying to explain that cruel world to his child. A serious topic, unfortunately produced to death by David Brandes and drowned in panpipe sound by Edward Simoni. I guess the result doesn’t change the world … it’s a pity.
A funny story full with trivias can be found around Ilhama. The singer from Azerbaijan won the national casting for the Eurovision Song Contest in 2011 – however Ell/Nikki participated in Düsseldorf and won. Ilhama finally also enters Europe with her version on Bei mir bist du scheen a classic tune grown famous by The Andrews Sisters. The track alone wouldn’t find any new fan – combined with a beat and fitted to recent electro-swing hype the Azerbaijan singer can enter the German list at position 48. Producer of the hit is German DJ OGB. I guess the track might have a chance of growing.
Lowest German new entry can be found at position 82. Tom Lüneburger is a young German singer songwriter who right now announces his second album. As lead single he offers we are one a duet with the voice of Silbermond Mrs. Stefanie Kloß. It’s a combination copying the formula young singer plus well known voice/face like heard before with Revolverheld feat. Marta Jandová or Bosse & Anna Loos. Well, it works again.
Let's have a look to Germany's neighbour Switzerland. Right now it sends some popular releases into the hit list – leading the bunch is still DJ Antoine with two hits Welcome To St. Tropez and Ma chérie. Mike Candys & Evelyn ft. Patrick Miller are still strong in sales with their One Night in Ibiza. This week two further Swiss productions join the club.
DJ Remady is hard on the heels of his famous colleagues and launches a second hit in Germany. Give Me A Sign is a late follow up to I’m No Superstar showing up in the lists last year. The new offer enters at position 58 – it is the highest rank so far for the DJ.
And finally an old mate is back: In 2011 DJ BOBO gave his 1001st concert. It was in Las Vegas and Mr. Bobo was quite impressed by the city – his next album is to be called Dancing In Las vegas. The first single taken from that release is Everybody’s Gonna Dance. If you love to listen to DJ Bobo you will for sure love the track too. So far the single performs bad. Position 70 is one of the worst placing ever. Only Colors Of Life stalled 5 places lower in 2001.
If you can count properly you get 5 Swiss productions inside the German chart. I guess that's quite a novum … if you do have closer informations, please let me know.

Strong German acts: Lombardi - Engels - Bendzko
Once again TV is the tool for making hits. In our actual case a TV show does have the power of rebounding a former Number 1 hit back to the top. Germany’s last big show for the whole family Wetten dass...? (Bet That...) was aired on 18th of June from Mallorca presenting Jennifer Lopez as well as Sarah Engels & Pietro Lombardi. The result: JLO shoots 4–1 giving her and companion Pitbull a sixth week at the top spot. On The Floor now matches the six week run of Bruno Mars’ grenade back in spring this year and it is the track spending most weeks inside the Top 10 this year. Much more impressive than this statistics is the fact that On The Floor returns after a six weeks break at the top. We’ve seen such a feat almost a year ago when Lena gained another single week at the top right after winning the Eurovision Song Contest. It was the first time in chart history that a single returned back to the top after more than a month absence. Now history repeats itself. Does this means we have to expect much more rebounders the next years?
At number 2 the DSDS love couple Sarah & Pietro enters the list with new single I Miss You. It is a very pink r’n’b-pop-ballad – sounding very American and I’m really wondering that such 90ies sound can make it that high in 2011. Well, the audience of Wetten dass…? is something between 14 and 79, women older than 65 love the show – their taste IS conservative.
For Pietro Lombardi it is just the right time to launch a second hit – his girlfriend (are they still a couple?) really does a feat. Having two Number 2 hits in a row she is now the second most successful not-winner of DSDS and probably the most succesfull runners up contestant. Mike Leon Grosch – the second place in 2006 – had a singlenumber 1 hit the same year. And Daniel Küblböck – number 3 in the very first season – had three top 10 hits in 2003 /2004. The first one You Drive Me Crazy shooting to number one for two weeks. Both of them are forgotten right now. It is very likely that Sarah Engels goes that way too.
Also the second track entering the Top 10 is a German one. Tim Bendzko is one of the young German artists with huge expectations. This week his debut album starts at number 4 in the album list. The single Nur noch kurz die Welt retten (Just have to save the world) profits of the release and rises 15 – 9. It is the complete opposite of the Engels/Lombardi production. Stripped down, authentic and very lyrical. Probably Tim Bendzko will have a much longer musical career.
Third successful German track is Jupiter Jones that is rising 12 – 11 with Still (Calm). Inside the Top 20 are cascada and Andreas Bourani also meaning we do have six German productions in the upper region of the chart. That’s pretty much … Plus Frida Gold is waiting at position 21 – we talk about that later for sure.

chart flash 11-24: LMFAO and an omnipresent Pitbull
Finally the Europe wide hit Party Rockl Anthem also enters the number 1 in Germany. US American electro duo LMFAO already had the top spot in Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France,Ireland, Switzerland and in the UK (see statistics at acharts.us) – the world charts see them rising to number 3. It took the project six week to get on top – that’s not really unusual. The last track taking more than a month for climbing to Germany’s best sold single was The Time (Dirty Bit) by The Black Eyed Peas that set Germany under fire at the very beginning of the recent year.
It is the very first number 1 hit for LMFAO in German speaking area. They first appear exactly one year ago alongside David Guetta, Chris Willis & Fergie whit the track Gettin’ Over You that spent 27 weeks in the German list climbing up to number 15. In Austria it went to number 4 – the UK saw them shooting to number 1 for the very first time. In 2011 the so far hiatus of their career seems achieved. Follow up single Champagne Showers right now arrived in the UK list – all I can say the mood for another electro smash summer hit by LMFAO seems very likely.
Another steadily rising strong electro hit arrives at number 2 with Give Me Everything – the track presented by all star collaboration Pitbull feat. NE-Yo, Afrojack & Nayer. It is the 7th week for the track in the German list. Will it rise a place further next week?
Pitbull also occupies number 3 alongside JLO. On The Floor spends its 13th week inside the Top 10 and we can name it for sure as one of the big hits of this year.
Pitbull once again: He also appears newly in the chart at Shakira’s latest single Rabiosa where he is featured. Number 26 for the seventh track charting in 2011 with at least a guest appearance of the Cuban-American rap star.
Rising to number 4 Alexandra Stan with Mr. Saxobeat equals the result of fellow countryman Edward Maya from last year. For the first time in German pop history two years in a row see at least one Top 10 hit coming from an Romanian artist. Maybe we have to watch that country as a deliverer of summer dance pop for the next time.
Highest new entry this week is San Francisco the new single of cascada released as a teaser for follow up album Original Me. It is the well known mixture of dance pop – a new tone is the very clear voice of Natalie Horler sothat one really can follow the lyrics. (which is not necessary anyway – bubbly dance pop dream with a reference to the good old times of 1969 ... did we had eurodance music then?)
One last story for today. Recent superstar Pietro Lombardi now tumbles down in the official sales charts also. Call My Name stops at number 7 coming from the top – it is the deepest fall from number 1 since Tokio Hotel touched down to number 7 with Übers Ende der Welt in February 2007. The album chart lists Pietro Lombardi still at number 1 – so all fans of casting pop might be calmed down. The world still turns the right way.

chart flash 11-23: Why is Pietro Lombardi still at the top?
We’re facing an absolutely bizarre situation. Although superstar Pietro Lombardi doesn’t play any significant role neither in airplay nor in digital sales charts (iTunes: nr.10 on Fr 27th of May; number 18 on Thu 2nd of June; amazon digital number 12; musicload sees number 10; mp3.saturn sees also number 10) and even the physical sales at amazon only list a number 112 – but media control reports today having his debut single Call My Name at number 1 for the fourth time. The Swiss charts recently are doubted of compiled regularly. What’s about the German ones. Do they really reflect consumption within Germany? Well – there is that speciality of media control’s official German charts. They list not thwe most sold tracks but the tracks that gained most amount of money – so cheaper mp3s/Cds count less than the ones much more expensive.
Anyway: Pietro Lombardi is only the fourth super star winner who can get a four weeks run at the top. If not freshly released Jedward single or the new track of Shakira feat. Pitbull have the power of shooting to number 1 Pietro does have the real chance of getting the superstar with the longest stay at the German top. The recent iTunes list is promising exactly that. Let’s just wait another week...
Having the five weeks run of On The Floor followed by Call My Name for four weeks we now face a situation last seen in summer 2010 when Waka Waka (This Time For Africa) had a six weeks run followed by We No Speak Americano that occupied the top spot for seven weeks.
Highest new entry of the week is The Lazy Song offered by Bruno Mars. It is his third top 10 single in a row – all charted within the past eight months. Bruno Mars also is the one and only act having three Top 10 hits in 2011 so far. With 22 weeks inside the top 10 he is far and away the best performing act so far this year. The Lazy Song actually starts at number 9.
Best new German track is Nur noch kurz die Welt retten (Just have to save the world). It is – again – a new comer who offered the song. Tim Bendzko later this month releases his debut album titled Wenn Worte meine Sprache wären (If I had words to speak/communicate) – for sure this debut will made a strong impact in the charts.

Chart Flash 11-22: Fraser – JEDWARD – Bourani
It is the third week for recent superstar winner Pietro Lombardi at the top of the German chart. He now joins the club of last two year’s winners Mehrzad Marashi and Daniel Schuhmacher.
Highest new entry is a song by Brooke Fraser from New Zeeland. Something In The Water is a calm and romantic song fitting perfectly the recent trend of young women singing about the easy life.
Finally JEDWARD arrives. The track Lipstick now is listed for the chart – the physical single followed on 30th May according to amazon / 3rd of June according to mix1.de – it will count for next week’s chart respectively the week after. It is so far the highest ranked song of the contest that can gain an official chart place also. In Düsseldorf it became number 8. – Probably the winner song by Ell & Nikki will chart also … prospections of a good rank are minimal.
Highest German new entry is Nur in meinem Kopf (Only In My Head) by newcomer Andreas Bourani. According to some pages he is the new big hope of German music business. His company UNIVERSAL finally tried „new“ ways of promotion: His video is also available at youtube. Most of UNIVERSAL artists are blocked here. Entering the charts at number 16 it seems the right step.
The song itself is a very positive poprock track praising the joy and phantasy in life. It follows directly the sound of artists like Adel Tawil or Clueso – for latter one Andreas Bourani was the warm up act.

Chart flash 11-21: Why doesn't Jedward appear in the list?
It is a medium scandal watching th enew survey of most sold tracks in Germany compiled by media control. The big commercial Eurovision winner Jedward is not listed anywhere although their Lipstick ruled all download charts for a full week. A few days after the contest media control announced a separate survey of Eurovision tracks – Jedward on top followed by British entry Blue. The recent press information of media control does not mention Jedward at all. Highest new entry related to the contest comes by Blue shooting to number 7. It is given Jedward would rank inside top 5 probably close to number 1. Independent chart blog oljo is questioning: does Jedward’s music company undermining their artist’s success?? Or even worse: do they manipulate the charts? – These concerns are heavy but based on the fact that number 1 artist Pietro Lombardi is under contract at UNIVERSAL too. Additionally German yellow press shitstorms the Eurovision contest by moaning bout an airplay boycott for (commercially associated) DSDS artists. It’s a „war“ private casting show against European show event. UNIVERSAL as one of the big players in the business obviously supports the first one. Registering the Jedward track as chart eligle could have set pressure to Pietro Lombardi.
Having the DSDS winner Pietro Lombardi a second week at the top means a sixth number one hit in a row that spends at least two weeks there. We have seen such a feat last year between end of January and beginning of Decmeber already by passing 9 consecutive number 1 hits spending at least two weeks at the top. To see how charts behaviour of tracks has changed we should have a look at the year 2009 and before. Back than it was usual having four or five (or even more) number one hits falling down after a fortnight.
Highest new entry of the week covering sales from 13th to 19th May is related to another huge event than superstar castings or Europe’s most adored hits. It is the German Bundesliga and its new champion club Borussia Dortmund that propelled a single up the list. The very young team under coach Jürgen Klopp had its most successfull season since 10 years ruling the whole year almost every match and assuring its championship already two matches before the final day. Celebrating this success (it is the 7th championship the club won since 1945) the club asked German symphonic rock band Krypteria for recording an anthem – Die BVB-Hymne 2011. Accompanied by the BVB Jahrhundertchor (BVB Century Choir) it is the recording attracting most people. The CD comes with an original piece of stadium grass – a tough gimmick.
It is Krypterias 3rd chart hit – the second top 10 entry after Liberatio went to number 3 in Januar 2005 when it was used as the background sound of a TV advertising for donations helping people in Thailand and Indonesia after the tsunami disaster. In the years between the band was active and recorded some new material but did not chart at all. Now as they have a big event’s support Krypteria is gaining it’s second biggest hit to date.
Accompanying BVB Jahrhundertchor appeared in the charts for the first time at the very beginning of last year. It was the centennial anthem of the club Schon seit 100 Jahren (Already for a 100 years) that was listed at number 80 for a single week.
Last flash story for this week: Gagamania comes to an end!
New single Judas badly fails by entering only at a mere position 23. The Edge Of Glory as the second Gaga track entering this week reaches number 28 by downloads only.

chart flash 11-20: A completely new Top 5
What a week! Three new entries inside the Top 5 – two of them right at the top. Both launched by the big TV event Deutschland sucht den Superstar (Germany is searching for the super star) – abr. DSDS. Winner of the show – 18 years old Pietro Lombardi is shooting to number 1 right after the final’s end. Call My Name is the first song doing so since one complete year when winner of last year’s season Mehrzad Marashi propelled to the top right after the final. Two years ago a single shooting direct to nr. 1 was kind of a usual feat. In 2009 eight of 14 number one entered the charts direct at the top. Last year there were only two of 11 number one hits doing so. Does the digital age change the chart behaviour slightly?
Call My Name is not only the new straight number one hit after a long time, it also broke the record of being the fastest selling online single in one day gaining gold status within 26 hours for selling 125.000 copies. The full CD release was in shops three days later – boosting the week’s sales to unbelievable heights.
Right behind Pietro Lombardi his recent girlfriend and DSDS-competitor Sarah Engels enters the list with same song Call My Name. This track is available as download only – reaching number 2 means an still rare feat. Unfortunately number 2 in such a week is number two at the breaking news also – nobody really takes notice.
There are much more stories behind the two artists at the top. Pietro Lombardi is not only the first straight number 1 artist in a year – he is the first German number 1 act in almost a year too. Only Lena shot one week to number 1 in between right after her Eurovision win last year. Right now it looks like only DSDS and an unbelievable Song Contest win have the power of propelling German artists to number 1. Nobody is wonder ing that last time we had two German acts at number 1 and 2 was also one year ago when Mehrzad Marashi occupied the top spot and Lena held firm at runner’s up position for complete four weeks in May 2010.
Two DSDS stars at the top was last seen in June 2008 when actual winner Thomas Godoj ranked with Love Is You over 2007 winner Mark Medlock and his Summer Love. The two main DSDS stars of one season had a battle at the top of the charts also in April 2003 when very first winner ever – Alexander went first number 1 with Take Me Tonight followed two weeks later by Daniel K. and his You Drive Me Crazy. Both changed places at the top for three weeks.
Having two versions of one song at the top is a feat happening only every 30 years probably. We have to go back to June 1984 when Self Control by Laura Branigan was number one followed directly by the original version of Italian Raf for three weeks.
The third new entry this week is a French–US–Trinidad collaboration. Other weeks of this year would have seen a track starting at number 5 as the story of the week – not so this recent issue. Though Where Them Girls At by David Guetta feat. Flo Rida and Nicki Minaj is worth some few words. It is the 7th single / track charting this year on which the French DJ David Guetta appears as an performing artist making him the most present act of 2011. He made that feat last year already. Both years Rihanna follows right behind him – so there is a constant interest in the main acts of commercial pop music.
For the two main acts on Where Them Girls At the track is the third consecutive Top 10 hit bringing David Guetta to an total of 7 top hits meanwhile Flo Rida collects 4 Top 10 hits under his belt so far. To continue with the comparison Guetta – Rihanna, the lady from Barbados already had 3 Top 10 hits this year summarizing a whole 15 Top 10 hit singles at all.
Third act of Where Them Girls At is pretty new to the German chart. Nicki Minaj makes her chart debut as the third new act this week.
Appendix on 20th May
I was wrong by telling you that the last song occupying number 1 and 2 in different versions was Self Control. 20 years after that track – in June 2004 – Dragostea Din Tei shot to number one performed by Moldavian O-Zone. A few weeks later at the end of June the version of Romanian Haiducii climbed to number 2. After two weeks the Haiducii take slided a little down till number 4 but came back at the end of July to repeat the number 1 and 2 game for a further week.
Sorry for the disinformation!

Having two new entries inside the Top 10 overshadows all other movements a little. There are two climbers worth to notice. Dutch singer Caro Emerald rises two places to number 4 after her song A Night Like This was presented within the TV show Let’s Dance. The plot of the show is watching VIPs trying to do standard dances like rumba, cha cha cha, waltz et al. A Night Like This was used as the music for the Cha-cha-cha. For Caro Emerald number 4 is the highest place she ever managed to climb on. It took the song 11 weeks to get here.
The second climber is the all star crew around Pitbull. Give Me Everything in its second chart week can „break“ into the Top 10 giving leading Pitbull a follow up to his recent Number one On The Floor (alongsides main star JLO) and a fourth Top 10 hit as a credited artist. NE-YO after an almost three years break can return to the Top 10. Give Me Everything is no more than his second chart hit climbing that high. For the really first time Afrojack & Nayer can reach the upper 10 ranks.
A big jump up the list is done by Aloe Blacc. After Loving You Is Killing Me appeared as a background track at Germany’s Next Top Model the song climbed to number 16 two weeks ago. The interest in the song died soon – last week Loving You Is Killing Me tumbled down to number 30 again. Until it was performed in the semi final of DSDS by Ardian Bujupi – the looser of that almost last episode. Suddenly a huge fan base of the TV show recognised the song as worth of be buyed. Loving You Is Killing Me ranks now at number 12 – making it the best performing song of the show within the chart. And I really wonder why Ardian had to leave the show ...
Final winner Pietro Lombardi only can propell Wenn das Liebe ist (If it is love) by Glashaus (Glass House) to position 61.
A future hit is arriving within the Top 20 this recent week with Set Fire To The Rain by Adele is climbing four further places to number 20. Set Fire To The Rain is set to be the third single from her album 21. In Belgium, the Netherlands and in Italy the song already went to top hit status climbing into the Top 5. In Germany the interest for the song is grewing steadily finding ist way to the Top 20 as an digital album cut without any officially announced release date. That’s in fact a very unusual chart career. Most of the tracks listed are proper set and supported by commercials, TV adverts or similar presence in the media. Not so Set Fire To The Rain – probably another sign of possible democratization of the charts.
The German acts
Finally they did it! Jupiter Jones grab with their ballad Still the crown of being the most sold German production. It took the band 9 weeks and of course the four guys benefit from the lack of very strong German releases. In the official list by media control they slide 18 – 19 being the only German track within the Top 20.
Number 2 of the interne German tracks sales chart is Groove Coverage and their take on Angeline. I dropped a few words about it already last wednesday.
Leading the survey for six weeks the heydays of Strobo Pop are history right now. Die Atzen mit Nena drop 17 – 23 officially standing here as the third best sold German track.
The most successfull album by a German artist is still Schiffsverkehr (Ship Traffic) offered by Herbert Grönemeyer. New in the list is Cassandra Steen with her third album Mir so nah (So Close To Me) which lands at position 5 in the album chart. Supported by this success the leading single Gebt alles (Give All) is jumping back the singles list up to position 36.
These days Europe is looking at Dusseldorf. The Eurovision Song Contest takes place and the attention of the medias is huge. Since it was announced that Dusseldorf will host the contest some articles have been wrote why that boring city? Is it really the capital of pop music? – Probably it is not the German capital, but it aint at all a no go area for popular music. Probably most known the synth electro band Kraftwerk that had a few hits in the 70s and early 80s. These days a further band is bringing Dusseldorf back to the musical map of Germany. Broilers (meaning broiler / roast chicken but is used in Germany only regional; funny: the English plural S) are a fun punk band playing music for more than 15 years. 2011 they moved to a new label: JKP – and now finally entering their first chart hit. Harter Weg (Hard Way) starts its life at position 41. Probably real punk fans might say the new sound of Broilers is too fun, too commercial … well, real punk never made its way into German charts. It was always a funny or ironic version … or even worse, a mainstream adapted cleansed kind of punk. I am not here to judge about that – find your own opinion:
After start of the movie Kids Turbo the soundtrack of it also rises up the list. Though Scooter’s Friends Turbo can’t impress that much jumping only 59 – 43. It is so far the lowest charting track in their whole career.
Assuming that there is something like a continental connection and productions from Europe should have a stronger link to Germany than others I always have a special look at European releases. In the case of Romanian INNA the link to Switzerland, France or the UK seems much stronger than the one to Germany. At least what the official charts can tell. Sun Is Up is listed in the dance charts and in the iTunes charts for weeks . It never made the way into the official charts. After being used on TV in the Germany’s Next Top Model show the track can enter the list. Sun Is Up jumps to number 26 on downloads only. It is this the highest place INNA made in her two and a half year long chart career.
Norwegian duo MADCON released a third single from their album Contraband. For Outrun The Sun they took also Maad*Moiselle into the studio. The single starts right now at position 27 just in the moment when Freaky Like Me slides down 34 – 46 in its 24th chart week. Even last year’s Glow is still appearing in the charts tumbling down this week 49 – 65. Certainly the new track will not match the success of its two predecessors.

New German tracks and a TV show penetrating all
What’s going on? There are some European productions very successful right now in Germany. A French DJ is hitting almost the top helping an US hiphop star to having his biggest hit to date. Supported by the interest for the new track the predecessor jumps back into the Top 20 to. Who’s That Chick? sits pretty at Number 19 in its 20th chart week.
More European sounds wanted? A Dutch woman is jumping up the list to Number 5 with an 60ies inspired song. A Finnish band and a Belgian singer are joining both inside the Top 10. – Only German productions do not show up that good. Best sold German track since four weeks Strobo Pop by Die Atzen mit Nena slides down two places to Number 16.
The most popular new German track is caused by the show most important for the actual pop business – DSDS (Germany’s take on Idol). But it is last year’s season that now has a second participant entering the charts. MENOWIN Fröhlich – the scandalized challenger of Mehrzad Marashi finally released his first CD single called If You Stayed. The hardcore fanbase announced weeks before a concerted action to assure a triple platin hit . Finally that action failed totally. If You Stayed lands at highest new entry at Number 21. He is the fourth candidate of the show having a chart entry but at this time also the one with the smallest success. Winner Mehrzad Marashi does had two Top 10 hits, recall candidate Jennifer Braun had much more luck within the casting for the Eurovision Song Contest in Oslo that saw her as the second finalist having a Top 10 hit with I Care For You. And even Number 5 of the show – Thomas Karaoglan aka Der Checker had a Top 20 hit in July last year. Probably the career of MENOWIN just ends before it started.
Second highest new entry also comes from Germany. Söhne Mannheims (Sons of Mannheim) are back. The all star project is going to launch their next album – the fourth one named Barrikaden von Eden (Barricades Of Eden). It is scheduled for May. The first single Ist es wahr (Aim High) (Is it true?) reached the shops on 8th April – highly promoted on TV by an action called „Tolerance Day“. As always it is a song for the better ones of this world speaking about a better world and the courage of not being corrupted.
For lead singer Xavier Naidoo this track is the 49th chart hit in Germany.
German TV show Number 1 is DSDS having on 9th April a battle Europe vs. America. Winner was European Caro Emerald by having her first big success in Germany after her song was performed by Zazou Mall. Track number 2 having a huge impact by a performance in the show is Use Somebody. Marco Angelini (just eliminated 2 days ago) performed the song released in original by Kings Of Leon. The track re-enters the German list at 30.
Track Number 3 boosted by the show is Eurovision interlude song Glow. The song was performed by one of the big favourites Ardian Bujupi. Right after the show on TV the version by Norwegian MADCON climbed up the iTunes charts – enough to ensure a jump back to 41 in the week’s survey. The track now is no less than 45 consecutive weeks noted in the German charts – it is the fourth longest running track of the recent list.
Also the second song perormfed by Ardian takes a jump back. I Need A Dollar by Aloe Blacc has 28 chart weeks under its belt now and is climbing back 74–46.
The second big male favourite Pietro Lombardi also has its moment in the show. Funnily he chose (or was chosen) a song already presented in the show at thebeginning of February. Mad World had at that time a short 3 weeks chart run reaching Number 66. Now the ballad by Michael Andrews featuring Gary Jules is back at 47. It is still a very heart touching ballad – even in the version of the much too young Pietro.

Chartflash 11-12: Eurodance is not all but it is
This is the chart update covering the week 11th to 17th March – the week which saw the world somehow stopping shocked by the occurences going on in Japan. Indeed the very polemic mainstream chart site oljo.de paused publishing – and critisized TV shows like DSDS for continuing their scandalizing performance without any hesitation. Well – pop music hardly stops. There is no evil or accident which really could make people not consuming music and have some entertainment and fun. Or am I wrong?
A look at the actual preview of this weeks chart given by media control tells you the show’s going on. No news at the Top. Lady Gaga still holds firm at No. 1 with Born This Way. It is the second longest stay at the top spot for the Lady as both its predecessors Paparazzi and Bad Romance spend a single week at the top. Lady Gagas very first No.1 hit Poker Face spent there whole 13 weeks in 2009. Will the new single have the power breaking this feat?
The actual statistic sees Lady Gaga collecting 17 weeks at No.1 – she approaches the top 10 of artists with most weeks spending at the top. Right now she is joining acts like Bee Gees and Petula Clark.
The highest new entry in the list is an old one coming in the like of jay sean ft. Lil Wayne. Their Down was performed at DSDS (German’s take on Idols) by what looks like the next winner Pietro Lombardi which gives the track a huge boost in online sales shooting it up to No.9. What makes this rise spectacular is the fact that Pietro Lombardi performed the song a month before at the recall show making the track reentering at position 51. It spend three weeks within the charts cause of its circulating youtube video. Now Pietro Lombardi and the track had much more presence in the show – and the fan crowd of the contestant is growing obviously.
Jay Sean finally sets his one and only chart track in Germany to a proper hit. His companion on the track Lil Wayne knows already how it feels in the upper regions of the charts. In early 2009 he accompanied Kevin Rudolf for the crossover track Let It Rock which spent three weeks at No. 10. Down is for now the highest charting track he is credited to.
The highest really new entry is not at all the most successful CD release of the week. That crown goes again to Lady Gaga … but well No.1 is No.1 with or without a proper physical release. A full release after a three years break should called a comeback. Well here it is: the lady used to be a superstar at the very beginning of this century Jennifer Lopez or shortly called JLO. Between 1999 and 2007 she topped the US charts four times and having five Top 10 hits additionally. Germany was not really the region of big success. JLO have had only six Top 10 hits none of them rising higher than position 5. The american RnB sound was featured everywhere on TV and radio but the real life was slightly different. Five years later the world seems different: Europop is crowding the US charts. Me as an European do not really understand what is so interesting with cheesy sounds and stamping beats. Well it works. Right now in the US also. No wonder the big RnB diva chose an old European hit from 1989 to rework. Lambada by French project Kaoma was the sound of the late 80ies giving the longing for a hot holiday affair a musical interpretation. The song topped the charts in almost every European country. Originally Lambada bases upon a Bolivian track – maybe that link made the single a minor hit in the states as well. No.46 – meaning a small fan crowd took notice of it.
The new take on the hook line attracts much more people. JLO combined the caribbean sound with club appeal and a guest rap by playboy of now Mr. Pitbull. The melange works – On The Floor by now reached No.5 in the US. In Europe the hedonistic anthem just started catching fire. Austria and Switzerland see the track rising to No.3. Germany by now is a little more reserved. The single starts its chart life at No.10. It is the first time in four years JLO reaches the Top 10 in Germany. Pitbull does have his third track inside the German Top 10 – or if you count his appearance on Enrique Iglesias’ I Like It this is his fourth Top 10 hit.
The best new CD start offered by German artist is the new recording of Die Atzen (sorry, that term is really not translatable). The last three years they had two huge hits with Das geht ab (That rocks) and Disco pogo followed by two minor releases. Now they try to continue their success with their latest album Party Chaos announced with the single Strobo Pop. The formula of the sound is well known – what is new is the featured artist they asked for help. It is nobody else than NENA. She is one of the female German artists recording for almost 30 years and still very popular. The other one is Anette Humpe who just take a pause from her work with Ich + Ich. Well – NENA had a lot of transformations in her carreer. Now she is in her fifties and still can attract an audience of teenagers. In fact NENA probably has more fans within the group of underaged than amongst the more serious adults. The actual collaboration clearly underlines that. One could argue and discuss now about the strength of pop and its ability of undergoing every commitment. Four years ago Die Atzen were famous for being the nasty and rude rap boys – NENA more or less tried to keep 80ies icons alive like Kim Wilde. In 2011 both together appear on an electro club track taking some 90ies power combining it with the toughness of today and talking about only ones: party party party. Strobo Pop for me is the straight consequence of tracks like JLOs On The Floor – more hedonistic, more reckless and much more complicated to sell. In Germany that new youth culture still have power – No. 20 in the first week is a statement.
