What a race! The midweek charts saw Ed Sheeran and his Shape Of You dropping to #3. A few days later it still shines as the #1 song of the week in its 14th consecutive week. It is now the longest running #1 by an British artist at all. Leaving the epic run of Sarah Brightman (+ Andrea Bocelli) with Time To Say Goodbye (Con Te Partiro) in 1996/97 one week behind as it beats the run of Tom Jones' Delilah that ruled the list from 1st of May to 31st of July 1968 which are 92 days or 13 weeks and one day.
Additionally the song is listed as the 10th longest running #1 hit of all times. It shares the honor with Dragostea Din Tea by O-Zone which in fact was the last #1 hit spending 14 weeks at the top spot–13 years ago.
The challenger of Ed Sheeran was and is the new single of Die Toten Hosen. Unter den Wolken was presented at the award ceremony for the ECHOs on 6th of April and immediately stormed the list. At the end of the week sales decreased dramatically–the iTunes list for Monday 17th sees the song ranking only at #40.
Anyway it is the 4th single of the band reaching the top 3–three of them did so in this current decade. Another nine songs reached top10 status and Unter den Wolken stands as the 43rd chart hit of the band at all. Their first song entering the list was Hier kommt Alex back in November 1988.
The "anti ECHO son" Menschen Leben Tanzen Welt by Jim Pandzko Feat. Jan Böhmermann leaps 84–10. It is the second top 10 entry for the comedian.
Also a week after the big invasion Ed Sheeran serves the most wanted song of the week. Shape Of You now spends a tenth week at the German top as album : (Divide) also leads the list for a second week. This recent year only Helene Fischer and The Rolling Stones had the honour doing so.
This recent week expands the British leadership over the German list to 25 consecutive weeks. Never before British acts had done so before. Additionally the full list contains 33 songs with British participation–one more than past week.
Back to Ed Sheeran: Second song is Galway Girl which climbs three places to #5 and serves as the third hit for the singer that reaches the top5 in 2017. With Castle On The Hill clinging on at #7 there are again three songs by Ed Sheeran inside the top 10.
A fourth song sits at #20 with Perfect.
Almost all songs off the album again chart in this week. Only Save Myself drops out from #56 which means Ed Sheeran does have this week 15 simultaneous hits.
The story of the week might be connected to the 6-3 rise of club tune Tuesday. Producer and DJ Burak Yeter is only the second Turkish born producer reaching the German top 3. So far it was Mousse T. who peaked there with Sex Bomb in 1999. The only "real" Turkish act reaching the German top 10 was Tarkan who peaked with Şımarık at #6 in 1997.
New inside the top 10 You Don't Know Me by Jax Jones Feat. Raye is. The song comes in at #6 in its fifth chart week.
To #16 Stay by ZEDD & Alessia Cara rises. It is the third chart week for the song.
Second new comer to the top 20 is the new offering by Jason DeruloSwalla. The production features Nicki Minaj and Ty Dolla $ign. The latter one adds a third top 20 hit after Work From Home (featured by Fifth Harmony) and Sucker For Pain in 2016. Jason Derulo and Nicki Minaj had a two years absence from the top 20.
Biggest gainer of the week jumps 46 places to #40. Due to release of album Die bunte Seite der Macht teasing single So schön kaputt reaches a new peak. It is the second chart hit for Berlin duo SDP. Mask Off is the first track by Future reaching the upper half of the German charts by jumping 44 places to #39 in its second chart week. He already has two lower appearances as featured artist under his belt. Mask Off belongs to the new US rap sound tracks approaching Europe since a few months.
The highest new entry comes in as low as #47. It is Waterfall by production duo Stargate who already has some super hits under its belt but never mentioned as main artist. This is the very first chart entry featuring P!NK & SIA.
Ed Sheeran holds firm at the top for a seventh week with Shape Of You. So it definitely is one of the big hits of 2017. And it writes chart history as it now adds the 22nd consecutive week of having a British act at the German top. I checked the lists before 1971 too and so I have the honour to tell you: Never before in chart history British acts performed as successful.
This period of course might end soon as there are no proper candidates for #1 coming from Britain in this moment. The highest new entry which lands at #3 is a Norwegian-USAmerican collaboration between DJ KYGO and singer Selena Gomez. It Ain't Me marks the return to chart power for the DJ after half a year of abstinence. It is his third Top 3 hit following 2015 success Stole The Show that peaked at #2 in June 2015.
Selena Gomez hits top 10 status for the very first time. So far her German chart debut Naturally was the highest performing single by peaking at #12 in spring 2010.
New inside the top20 Burak Yeter is. The Turkish born DJ brings his German chart debut Tuesday in its third week to hit status.
In opposite to the British hiatus of productions Germans are quite underrepresented this week. The highest German production lands as low as #19 in the face of Robin Schulz in collaboration with David Guetta & Cheat Codes. Shed A Light drops down seven places. The highest track using German language sits newly at #20 with the next available track by ZunaCazal.
Songs On The Rise
RE at #48 Imagine DragonsBeliver 2nd chart week
+25 places Jax Jones Feat. RayeYou Don't Know Me #54 in its 2nd week
+12 places AJRWeak #40 in its 4th week
+12 places Julia MichaelsIssues #46 in its 3rd week
It wasn't as sure that the start of Fifty Shades Darker had no further impact on the leading song from the soundtrack I Don't Wanna Live Forever. Indeed Zayn & Taylor Swift still rank at #2 while Ed Sheeran's Shape Of You spends a sixth week at #1 in Germany.
It is this the 21st consecutive week with a British production at #1. Never before in history of weekly German charts (since 1971) British productions ruled that long this country. So far it was the 20 weeks long period from October 1987 to February 1988 when Rick Astley (twice), The Bee Gees and the Pet Shop Boys appeared hand in hand at the German top.
The Chainsmokers rise one single place to #3 with Paris. It is the second top3 success after Closer back in early autumn past year.
Two songs are new inside the top 10. There are at #9 the first chart entry for French Maitre GimsLoin–the song jumps nine places in its fourth chart week.
In its third chart week Scared To Be Lonely rises seven ranks to #10. It is for both Martin Garrix & Dua Lia the second top 10 entry. For Dua Lipa it comes back to back to her appearance on the Sean Paul single No Lies which peaked at #10 in January and this week sits pretty at #16 while Martin Garrix had his Animals peaking at #4 back in autumn 2013.
The follow up to Human this week lands at #13. It is the third chart week for Rag'n'Bone Man's Skin. Simultaneously the album Human lands at #2 in its first week on sale. #1 comes from Majoe whos Auge des Tigers is the second hip hop album at the German top in 2017. From this album also three solo tracks can enter the singles list at the lower end (#82 resp. #83) both with a long row of featured artists which causes a new negative record: KC Rebell now appeared on 23 chart singles without reaching the top 10. The highest rank he achieved was #15. So he performed less successful as Westernhagen who also had 23 hits charted but peaked at #11. Third on this overview is Farid Bang now having 21 chart entries under his belt the highest peaking as low as #28.
At #3 on the album list the soundtrack to Fifty Shades Darker lands. Fromt his compilation not only #2 comes but also #30 Helium by SIA and #87 The Scientist in the version of Corinne Bailey Rae who after 10 years and nine months can launch her second chart entry. Her first Put Your Records On peaked at #75 in May 2006.
The third track from the movie album comes in at #88 with Nick Jonas & Nicki Minaj and their Bom Bidi Bom.
The first month of 2017 is gone and the top 10 almost completely is changed. The artist of the year seems to be Ed Sheeran as he spends a fourth week at #1 with Shape Of You. Additionally Castle On The Hill returns back to #2–it is the second time this year having Ed Sheeran occupying the first two ranks. Pretty at #3 Rockabye by Clean Bandit clings on–the hit from the tail end of 2016. So we do have a fourth week with a complete British top 3.
The renewing of the top 10 also this weeks continues. At #7 there is newly inside the top Way Down We Go by Icelandic band Kaleo. It rises seven places in its fourth weeks and so belongs to the very fast growing hits of now. The last top 10 hit coming from Iceland was seen in May/June 2012 when Of Monsters And Men had their Little Talks peaked at #5.
The sad story comes for German productions. As there are no new releases are around the highest ranking German song now slides out of the top 10. The song in question is Chöre by Mark Forster which has its turn on #11 this week. It is this the first time since November 2016 that no German production is placed higher than #11.
The highest new entry comes in at #19. It is a collaboration of Martin Garrix & Dua Lipa. Scared To Be Lonely follows Garrix' top 20 hit from past autumn In The Name Of Love while Dua Lipa launches a third top 20 entry with the recent production–the direct predecessor No Lies (alongside Sean Paul) still ranks well at #10.
And there are still some more future hits to come, as there are:
- Steady 1234 by VICE Feat. Jasmine Thompson & Skizzy Mars going 57–30 in its third chart week
– Loin by French Maitre Gims Feat. Dany Synthé going 74–37 in its second week
- Handclap by Fitz and The Tantrums going 80–59 in its second week
- Bad And Boujee by MIGOS Feat. Lil Uzi Vert going 88–65 in its third week
- I Got You by Bebe Rexha going finally 89–67 in its fourth chart week, the song first appeared on the charts in early November past year
On #93 an artist returns to chart honors who was 10 years ago one of the supporters of Raggaton fame in Europe. Daddy Yankee had one top 10 hit with Gasolina in 2005. A year later minor hit Rompe showed up for seven weeks. More than ten years later– exactly this current week the Daddy is back as featured artist on Luis Fonsi's single Despacito. So far it is the lowest charting song of the Puerto Ricanian.
The first #1 of the new year is the last #1 of the old year: Rockabye by Clean Bandit Feat. Sean Paul & Anne-Marie spends a third week at the German top which marks the 15th consecutive week a British act appears there. For featured artist Sean Paul it is now the longest running #1 hit he appears on as Cheap Thrills alongside SIA left the top after two weeks in April 2016.
Almost exactly a year after Alan Walker's first hit Faded charted for the very first time he can launch a second top 5 hit as Alone goes 8–4 in its fifth chart week.
The first new top 10 hit stops by at #6. Shed A Light is an all star collaboration by Robin Schulz & David Guetta Feat. Cheat Codes. For Robin Schulz this is a return to top 10 status after a year although it is his seventh within three years. David Guetta already has now 18 top 10 hits under his belt–Shed A Light being the third consecutive and it is one of two simultaneous hits as Would I Lie To You sits pretty at #8 still.
As all Christmas tunes leave the list this week we do have 20 songs that were not listed the week before. 18 of them re-appearing in the list–it is the highest amount since March 2010.
* yes, Rag'n'Bone Man spends a 10th week at the top with Human and now matches the result of Phil Collins in 1989/90 and George Harrison in 1971. The last British solo male performing better was Tom Jones in 1968 when his Delilah topped the charts for two and a half months which is mathematically a 13 weeks run. Of course back than the charts were issued twice per month.
* Starboy by The Weeknd Feat. Daft Punk gains a place sitting now at #3
* highest new entry at #7 is the first new release taken from the winter edition of former #1 album Palmen aus Plastik by Bonez MC RAF Camora. The track is named Palmen aus Gold
* inside the top20 two further completely new songs by German artists start chart life: Shed A Light by Robin Schulz & David Guetta Feat. Cheat Codes at #14 and iPhone 17 by KC Rebell feat. Moé at #19. So there are eight productions involving Germans and seven in German sneaking through the top20. It is the best result since one year.
* KC Rebell brings his album Abstand to #1. 14 of the 16 tracks can reach the song list too. He falls one track short behind Bonez MC & RAF Camorain September this year
* The Weeknd can launch his album Starboy at #10–seven single tracks off that enter the song list. Both together increase the number of new entries to 18. It is the highest amount since one year. Adding the five re-entries we do have 23 tracks inside the charts that not appeared a week ago. It is this the biggest turnover of the list since end of May 2014.
What a race! The midweek charts just saw Would I Lie To You by David Guetta leading the list, at the end of the week Rag'n'Bone Man with Human gains the crown of being the most sold track. For a sixth week which makes singer Rory Graham the most successful British solo male since autumn 2011 when Marlon Roudette had an eight weeks run at the top with New Age.
No movement at the top–no movement inside the top 5.
The first real mover comes in at #9 in the face of James Arthur who sees his current song Say You Won't Let Go flying 12 places up. It is the second tio 10 hit for the British singer after his debut Impossible that achieved #5 in spring 2013.
New inside the top 20 are Clean Bandit Feat. Sean Paul & Anne-Marie with their single Rockabye that goes 28-15 in its second week. It is the freshest tune inside the top 20 and brings the Jamaican dancehall star for a second time in 2016 in.
At #19 Miami Yacine enters the top 20 with Kokaina for the very first time.
In its 8th chart week Human by Rag'n'Bone Man goes #1. The singer is the 9th act in 2016 that can enter #1 with its first chart entry at all. In 2015 only eight acts did so. It is also the fifth consecutive #1 song involving European acts. And it is the first British production since early January this current year–which is indeed a long absence from the top.
53 years after its first release The Sound Of Silence becomes a top 5 hit in Germany. The version of USAmerican band Disturbed rises two places to #4 this chart issue. In the USA, Japan, Australia and Austria the original recording from the 60s already went Top 5, even topping the list in the USA.
SIA already had a #1 hit this year with Cheap Thrills in April. Five months later succeeder The Greatest enters the top 10. Featured artist on this recording is Kendrick Lamar who reaches a personal career peak by landing at #7.
The highest new entry lands at #13 in the likes of The Weeknd Ft. Daft Punk. Starboy is their first collaboration and the first chart appearance for the French electronic duo since its #1 hit Get Lucky back in 2013.
There are only three songs new inside the list and two songs re-entering. It is already the second time in 2016 that there are only three new entries (but we do had already two weeks with only two new entries) and the fifth tine having five songs inside the list that were not the week before.
DJ Snake and Justin Bieber a second week top the German list with Let Me Love You. With DJ Snake the 17th consecutive week a French act is noted at #1 spot. Justin Bieber's second #1 week makes him the best performing Canadian since past years Francesco Yates who had a three weeks run at the top alongside Robin Schulz on Sugar.
After four month finally a British act approaches the very top again. It is Rag'n'Bone Man with his Human that goes 6–2 and takes the baton from Kyla who alongside Drake was the last British occupying the runners up position (and higher).
The duo of past week Bonez MC & RAF Camora see their album Palmen aus Plastik tumbling down to #5 on the album's list. Still they do have 10 single tracks on the song list, Ohne mein Team best performing at #8. This feat truly is new for German hiphop albums.
Highest new entry comes in at #9. Philipp Poisel returns after four years to top 10 status with Erklär mir die Liebe as solo artist. In between he had a #1 visit as member of Band Aid 30 in December 2014.
New inside the top20 at #18 current single of 257ers is. Holz now matches the result of predecessor Holland. Highest chart entry of the band still is Baby du riechst peaking at #14 two years ago.
Biggest gainers are: Kokaina by Miami Yacine jumping 46 places to #46 Keine Maschine by Tim Bendzko leaping 35 places to #43 Still Falling For You by Ellie Goulding rising 30 places to #47 Mercy by Shawn Mendes going up 26 places to #69
* Indeed Imany can hold firm at the top with her Don't Be So Shy–it is now the sixth consecutive week which makes her the longest standing French female singer at #1 since the beginning of the German charts. The very first #1 by a French singer Am Tag als der Regen kam (Dalida) had an two months run in August and September 1958. Comparing those both runs is kind of unfair though to the fact that in 1958 monthly charts were issued–probably Don't Be So Shy alrady now is the most sold single of July and August 2016, so it equals the success of Dalida.
Remix duo Filatov & Karas with this week becomes the Russian act occupying German #1 for longest of all times.
* songs involving British artists again dip to a lower level then the week before: only 12 of 100
What a surprise! On the midweek charts Can't Stop The Feeling by JT still ruled the list–at the end of the week This Girl by Australian Cookin' On 3 Burners remixed by French KUnGS is the top selling song of the week. The song reaches #1 in its eighth chart week which is a very common time for the past months.
With KUnGS entering the top there ends a one and a half year abstinence of French acts at the German top. Back in 2014 astonishing four french productions reached the top. The Australian band is already the second act from the island continent this year. Back in 2010 two Australian acts topped the charts in one calendar year in the face of Empire Of The Sun and Yolanda Be Cool & DCUP.
Australian predecessor SIA by the way sits pretty at #4 with Cheap Thrills which gives us a situation with the four top ranks are occupied by #1 hits.
Two songs enter the top 10 for the first time. At #7 Alle Farben feat. YOUNOTUS stands coming from #16. Please Tell Rosie already is the third consecutive top 10 hit for Alle Farben–well there is a next German DJ on the way of becoming a beloved producer. This week he grabs the crown of being the best selling German act of the week outselling the highest new entry by one place.
At #8 German hiphop trio Beginner is back after more than 11 years. With Ahnma the trio has its first top10 hit waiting for it more than 17 years. Member Jan Delay already has some experience as solo artist plus a #1 appearance as part of the German Ban Aid at the end of 2014. Featured artist Gzuuz past week had his big breakthrough. His 10th entry is his highest chart appearance for now.
Of course the official EURO2016 anthem This One's For You by David Guetta Feat. Zara Larsson starts rising steadily. It reaches #19 this issue.
Highest gainer of the week is Don't Be So Shy by Imany. The song jumps 32 places to #31. 21 places up is the result for Holland by 257ers. The song stops at #46. Breathe by seeb feat. Neev takes an 18 places leap to #58 and at #75 EGO by Willy William lands after an 24 places leap.
New inside the German charts Austrian no.1 song Sound Of Silence by Disturbed is. Here it starts at #82 and probably will rise the next weeks.
Again the list contains only 14 productions including British acts. It is indeed a weak presence which might be hardly found in whole history of pop music.
JT spends a third week at the German top with Can't Stop The Feeling. So all three #1 hits tied to his name had a three weeks run at the top spot. Next week the current single does have the chance of becoming JT's longest #1 hit ever and probably his most succesfull at all. Let's wait–so far the iTunes survey lists the song still at the top although there are pressure from some newbies...
It is a very calm week on the upper end as the whole top 5 remains as it was a week before. It is this the third time in 2016. In 2015 we had this four times in the whole year but 2014 saw it a whole six times.
With only slight change at the top Faded by Alan Walker ranks as the longest running current top 10 hit collecting 18 weeks under his belt.
Inside the top 20 we have two new entries. At #16 Alle Farben launches a third top 20 hit with Please Tell Rosie. It is a very impressive career of the DJ so far: three chart entries–three top 20 hits.
At #17 Jennifer Lopez is back inside the top 20 after two years. In spring 2014 she appeared alongside Pitbull on the soccer anthem We Are One which peaked at #6. Her current offering is named Ain't Your Mama.
Back inside the top 20 Miracles by Julian Perretta goes. Four weeks ago the song touched the top 20 shortly–now the song goes a few further with 21–19 in its 10th chart week.
Gainers of the week are The Strumbellas from Canada. In the past week they were on promotional tour throughout Germany staging also on Circus Halligalli. Several mixes are around too and so Spirits take a leap to #35 in its third chart week.
Second gainer is sleeper hit Never Be Like You by Flume Feat. KAI. The song jumps 76–49 in its 11th chart week after the Flume Album Skin is in shelves. The single so far gots cherrypicked a lot giving the Australian DJ his first commercial medium hit in Germany.
The highest new entry starts chart life as deep as #56. It is Ariana Grande's new single Into You and it is already the sixth week in 2016 that the highest new arriving song charts deeper as #50.
The album list sees rapper duo Gzuz & Bonez MC flying to #1 with High und hungrig 2. Ten of the tracks released on the album enter the song charts as single tracks too. Highest one is Blättchen und Ganja at #60. So there are 14 really new songs entering the list–it eclipses the result of the very first list this year. Back than there were five additional re-entries making that week the one with biggest turnover of the year so far.
The last story for today: With only 14 productions involving British acts this is one of the weakest issue for that big pop nation. The country with most production in the list are the USA with 32 this week followed by Germany (26 due to Gzuz & Bonez MC). Whole Europe serves with 66 productions.
Ellie Goulding's Love Me Like You Do does not falter a bit. It still stands at number 1 position in its sixth week. And already has written chart history as I reported past week.
Nailed at number 2 OMI's Cheerleader is due to the hands on by Felix Jaehn. It is the 12th chart week of the song at all and the sixth consecutive at number 2. Well–just before this run it had a short week at number 1 as well.
With Lost Frequencies and Are You With Me going 5–3 there is a slight move going on at the top end. And perspectives are good for getting the track a number 1. It is now the most successful Belgian production since MILOW's You And Me (In My Pocket). That is exactly four years ago.
New inside the Top 10 James Bay is. His Hold Back The River goes 14–6 in its ninth chart week. And new at number 10 British trio Years & Years comes in with it debut single King. So the Top10 once again is deeply in British hands. Seven out of ten productions come from the island. Counting the tracks by its origin (or at least the origin of artists involved) we see the best sold 14 songs with participation of Europeans. This result eclipses the one of May past year.
TV influenced re-entries
Although the current season of Deutschland sucht den Superstar is aired right now the biggest impact of a TV show comes this week from an event aired by public TV. Florian Silbereisen was presenting Die Besten im Frühling (Best of Spring)–a Schlager show– on 14th of March 2015. A bunch of stars and big names where on the show but most impressive Roland Kaiser was. His duet with Maite KellyWarum hast du nicht nein gesagt re-enters the list at number 59. The single is published since September 2014 and became something of a sleeping hit. The label just spread the message that a release on CD will follow in April. So that song might become the next big thing of German schlager.
And finally DSDS. Of course the casting format also has an impact on the charts. On the show on 14th of March an well known candidate had his performance again. Menderes Bağcı performed on every season but never made it into the final rounds. This year he chose Love Never Felt So Good originally recorded by Michael Jackson (&Justin Timberlake). His performance gave him a chance to enter the recall shows–as we know already also 2015 he was fired from the rest of the show. The chosen song meanwhile gets some chart honour again and re-enters for a week at number 71 in its 22nd chart week.
Ellie Goulding and nothing else. That's what counts in German pop business. Love Me Like You Do stands still at number 1 a fifth consecutive week. In general such a feat ain't that unusual. As a British act Ellie Goulding writes chart history. The last British number 1 for five weeks came from Passenger in March/April 2013. Let Her Go was the song in question. To find a British female solo artist who occupied the German charts we have to go back as far as to the 60's. From mid-May to mid-July 1967 it was Sandie Shaw with Puppet On A String that held eight weeks firm at the top. One have to add: It was the time when the list was compiled only every fortnight. So Ellie Goulding is according to weeks at number 1 the most successful British female since almost 50 years. What a feat!
Of course there were some incidents over these decades that came really close to the actual fact. In May 2001 it was British all female band Atomic Kitten that blocked the number 1 slot for six weeks with it international breakthrough Whole Again.
In December 1996 Sarah Brightman started her astonishing 13 weeks run at number on with Time To Say Goodbye. Of course she was duetting with Italian Andreas Bocelli on that recording.
And in September and October 1990 Suzanne Vega appeared at number 1 for seven weeks with Tom's Diner. Her success came due to a remix of dance project DNA–so this wasn't a real solo project neither.
New inside the Top10
Belgian DJ Lost Frequencies launches the next deep house hit. Are You With Me goes 15–5 and is now the most successfull Belgian production since MILOW's You And Me in April 2011 that peaked at number 3.
Highest new entry comes in at number 9 and it is Hoodie Allen Feat. Ed Sheeran with All About It. For the US-American rapper it is the debut hit. Ed Sheeran already has 11 Top10 hits under his belt since late 2011–an impressive chart career.
This current issue of the charts provides a Top10 completely recorded with European attendance. We had this situation last in May past year. Although 10 months ago European productions were a bit more successful featuring the first 14 ranks with European help. This week it is "only" the Top 12 that is recorded this way.
Exactly at number 12 the winner of the German preselection for the Eurovision Song Contest Andreas Kümmert lands. Although Heart Of Stone was and is far and away the most loved song of the show it won't be staged in Vienna in May as the singer gave off his ticket to the runner's up Ann Sophie who sees her entry Black Smoke enter at number 29. So a second year the winner of the wild card chosen in club concerts around Germany will participate for Germany on the contest. Last year's Elaiza landed on the 18th place.
The abandonment of Andreas Kümmert was treated as a scandal by German press. It is far and away the first time a winning title can't participate. In 1999 Corinna May had to stand back after her title Hör' den Kindern einfach zu was detected a rip-off.
Walk by KWABS is the first new number 1 of 2015. The song benefits from the surprising weakness of David Guetta's single dangerous that tumbles to number 3 after six weeks at the top. Walk goes number 1 in its ninth chart week–that ain't the straight way. And it is the first British number 1 since August past year which shows the actual low presence of British acts. There were times, when Britain ruled the whole list.
On the other hand British music shows very strong. The highest new entry lands at number 2 in the face of Clean Bandit & Jess Glynne and their new single Real Love. That makes us having the two best sold singles coming from Britain–a feat last seen on November 11th 2005. Back than Melanie C was on top with her hit First Day Of My Life followed by the Sugababes and their last big hit single Push The Button. Even a week before the two songs were accompanied by two other British acts at number 3 and 4: Robbie Williams and James Blunt were the acts completing the bunch. Those were the days… Clean Bandit and Jess Glynne meanwhile start to becoming super acts. The band launches its second Top2 hit, the singer her third hit invading the Top 10–all that within less than a year.
Talking bout British acts: At number 6 Calvin Harris & Ellie Goulding arrive inside the Top10 with Outside. It is the first Top10 hit for the couple that already achieved number 13 in summer 2013 with I Need Your Love. Now it goes higher giving Calvin Harris his third Top10 in a row (and a fourth at all) and making Ellie Goulding visiting the Top10 for the second time (besides her appearance at the Band Aid 30-project).
In this current week there are only three new entries and three tracks re-entering the list. So only six songs had not charted the week before. This is the smallest turnover of the list since August 2011. Back in those days the charts changed much slower than today–a turnover of less than 10 songs occurred at least once within a quarter.
Tracks On The Rise
- Norwegian KYGO feat. Conrad with Firestone 84–33
- German Sasha with Good Days 57–38
- Last week's highest new entry OMI from Jamaica with Cheerleader 69-42
- Ariana Grande & The Weeknd with Love Me Harder 60–45
- Meghan Trainor with Lips Are Movin 83–53
No change at the Top: Still it is Jubel by French Klingande that finds the most buyers. It is the 7th week at the Top for the hit. Follow up tune Changes by Faul & Wad Ad climbs to number 5. Featured Pnau becomes the most successful Australian act since SIA featured by David Guetta last time one year ago.
Timber by Pitbull Feat. KE$HA rises a single place to number 3 which is the highest rank for the rapper since May 2011 when Give Me Everything followed on number 2 after his number 1 appearance with J.LO on the hit On The Floor. Additionally he now overtakes Mr. Flo Rida and is the act appearing third most inside the German Top 10 this current decade–right hinter Rihanna and David Guetta.
Released on CD single Atemlos durch die Nacht by Helene Fischer takes a 18 places leap to number 13. It is this the highest position the singer ever reached with her 10 charting songs.
Still available on more independent platforms only Tsunami by DVBBS & Borgeous reaches the Top 20 and sits pretty at number 18.
The slump of British music goes on. Only two productions from the Kingdom are inside the Top 20. Highest track still is Bonfire Heart by James Blunt–written and produced by USAmerican Ryan Tedder
Christmas is approaching heavily. Songs and tunes celebrating the holy time climbing up the list as usual. First of all still Wham!'s Last Christmas is leading the pack at number 32.
Artist of the week is German rapper Sido. His album 30-11-80 goes directly to number 1 in the album list. Leading single Einer dieser Steine still sits inside the Top 10. Most cherry picked track of the collection is Arbeit featuring Helge Schneider. It lands at number 33.
Klingande’s sixth week at the German Top makes Jubel the most successful French production since 1989 when Kaoma infected whole Europe with Lambada.
The follow up hit to Jubel already arrives inside the Top 10. Changes by French Faul & Wad Ad Vs. Pnau lands at number 10 with exactly the same mood and sound as we find at the Top.
Milky Chance celebrates with number 2 a new peak for its track Stolen Dance. It is the 18th chart week the track appears in.
The full power of music videos can be seen at number 4. The Pitbull/KE$HA single Timber gains four places after the video is on screens since November 24th. Additionally Pitbull performed the song at the American Music Award show–I guess that performance has less importance for the European market. On the other hand also Lady Gaga sees her single Do What U Want flying to number 14–which is a new peak.
Their performance on Stefan Raab’s TV Total Turmspringen brings the Family Of The Year a bunch of new fans. hero rises again 12–8 in its 14th chart week.
The weakness of British act still holds on and even progresses. Highest artist is still James Blunt whose former Nr.1 hit Bonfire Heart slides to number 12. Watching the whole Top 20 only four tracks coming from Britain sneak around there. A few weeks ago four British tracks invaded the Top 10 alone.
British-Irish teen band One Direction released its third studio album Midnight Memories which directly became number 5 within the albums charts. Most loved song of the collection obviously is Strong. The song is the highest new song inside the singles charts landing at number 24 without being a full single release. It also overtakes the official single The Story Of My Life which limps to number 29.
Other songs of the band invading the list: You & I at number 54, Don’t Forget Where You Belong at 66 and the title song Midnight Memories sneaks in at 91.
Tracks on the rise Tsunami by DVBBS & Borgeous is the killer track of the moment. It goes 58–26 without full sales promotion by amazon et al. What will happen when the big sale platforms list the track correctly. Probably this is the track that will made us dance on new year’s eve.
Also London Grammar is on the way up. Their single Strong still rises continously this week stopping at number 35. stromae does same–his formidable moves 52–39. And how does Afrojack perform? Well–with some more mixes in shelves The Spark jumps 80–44. berlin by Ry X used in a TV commercial rises 57–46. Set as the fourth single Demons by Imagine Dragons can made it into the list as a pure album cut. It begins its career at number 86.
The Voice of Germany effect
Aired in the night of Thursday 21st of November the full benefit can be watched at the rise of Philipp Poisel’s Ich will nur. Peer Richter performed the song and according to the 98–49 rise of the original he really is a candidate for the semi final. Wolke 7 also gains some attention. Max Herre as one of the jury surely is happy about number 60. Albulena Krasniqi made an impressive performance with Jessy J’s Nobody’s Perfect but it wasn’t enough for qualifying to the next round. The original instead re-enters at number 62. Chris Schummert still on the race brings Fast Car by Tracy Chapman for the first time to chart life. Number 81 is a late start for the single released in April 1988 and Top 5 in the UK and the USA. It is only Tracy Chapman’s second chart entry after her single Crossroads from 1989. This return ends an almost 24 years long abstinence from the charts for the artist. Coincidently Fast Car right now also appears on the UK charts again.
Another show–another hit: Madeline Juno had a performance on Verstehen Sie Spaß?–a big Saturday night show. As an effect her single Error climbs more than 30 places to number 50. Additionally she has some support by the movie Fack ju Göthe for which Error completes the soundtrack. Star guest number 2 was Yvonne Catterfeld. Her single Pendel re-enters at 59.
Finally: It’s Christmas time! You already know what that means. Right–some very well known classics are back in the list. First of all there is Last Christmas by Wham! that re-enters at number 70 and makes the band now present in the German charts for almost 31 years. Number 70 is a mere low restart for that song–does it mean we whitness the end of a popular tune? Melanie Thornton on the other hand returns with Woderful Dreams (Holidays Are Coming) at number 80 slightly better than the past three years same time. Also better than last year All I Want For Christmas Is You by Mariah Carey enters at 88. With only 33 chart weeks this is one of the smaller classics (which exists for 19 years).
Klingande spend a fifth week at number 1. Meaning Jubel eclipses the success of Bob Sinclars anthem Love Generation which was the last French production that was the most sold single for five weeks. That was back in 2006. To find another French success of that dimension one has to go back to autumn 1989 when Lambada paralyzed at least whole Europe. The project Kaoma had an impressive 10 weeks turn on the German top.
Adel Tawil brings his Lieder back to runner’s up position. After the run in the first week on sale and his first released album the song can made it to a real standalone hit too. So far he was once number 1 as an solo artist alongside Azad and once as one half of Ich + Ich.
A little sensation takes place on the upper place with a complete British free Top 10. Such a situation wasn’t seen for a long long time. The duet with Olly MursI Wan'na Be Lik You sneaks in at number 85 while Dream A Little Dream Of Me with Lily Allen lands three places further down.
Back to the upper regions: After nine weeks outside the Top 20 Birdy’s Wings is back at number 18. Peak of the single was in its release week in late September at number 15.
At number 21 a dance track comes in that ain’t fully released yet. Changes by French Faul & Wad Ad feat. Pnau is already a big hit in clubs and perfectly fits the number one sound of Klingande and likes. It’s very certain that we witness here the next big hit.
Helene Fischer now gets the full Bambi award effect: her single Atemlos durch die Nacht jumps 69–22 after her hosting and performance within the show aired on TV. It is this a new peak for the song and the second highest place she ever achieved in the singles chart after this year's Fehlerfrei which touched the Top 20 for one single week and now goes 86–54 again. – Her hit ich will immer wieder ...dieses fieber spürn also bounces up the list stopping at number 48 which is the highest position since its first chart run in autumn 2009.
Watching a hit growing: one week before its release as a single Unconditionally by Katy Perry rises further 20 places stopping at number 34. Also the Sportfreunde Stiller see their album title track New York Rio Rosenheim rising steadily. This weeks it arrives inside the upper half stopping at number 49 in its seventh chart week.
All NIght by Swedish Icona Pop gots some attention by its use for the latest ABSOLUT VODKA commercial campaign. Their first hit I Love It was benefitting heavily from a similar deal. Will the 97–66 turn of the new song enable as the begin of their next big hit?
The opener song of P!NK's one year old album The Truth About Love calls Are We All We Are and this week the song makes it up to a chart entry at number 82 as an album cut.
TKO–the second single from Justin Timberlake's album The 20/20 Experience: Two of two returns to chart honours after a new remix is around and the artist is back in the news with his movie Inside Llewyn Davis that will start in Germany soon. The single so far sneaks in at number 90.
