Feb 10th 17: Ed Sheeran Under Pressure

First Ed Sheeran gains the crown a fifth week with Shape Of You. So far the list seems stable and quiet. As long as we don't look at #2. There the signature song of the second Fifty Shades Of Grey movie jumps. I Don't Wanna Live Forever (Fifty Shades Darker) is the highest peaking release of both artists involved so far. ZAYN had his highest appearance a year ago with his solo debut Pillowtalk peaking at #5 (and immediately dropping out of the top10 the next week)–well as part of the Band Aid 30 cast he had a disguised #2 visit in the end of 2014 already. Taylor Swift herself really never touched the top 3 before. Her best selling single Shake It Off peaked at #5 for three weeks in autumn 2014. With her ninth chart entry she finally can come close to real chart honours.
The growing interest for the song comes exactly a week before the movie is in cinemas. Just today it is released–so there might some trouble take place at the very top of the charts.

At #9 a new entry inside the top 10 arrives with a 21 places jump. It is Steady 1234 and it brings Jasmine Thompson a third time to top 10 status. Again she appears as featured artist alongside the US-American producer VICE. She already has a #1 hit under her belt with 2015 massive hit Ain't Nobody (Loves You Better). Her solo releases did not catch any fire–the best selling Adore only managed to reach a #91 in 2014.

Again it is a week without any German production inside the top 10. The highest German still ist Mark Forster sliding down with Chöre two ranks to #13. It is this the lowest presence of German songs since October 2013 when Willst du by Alligatoah was the highest performing song at #14.

Jumping 19 places in its third chart week Loin by Maitre Gims enters the top 20 at #18 and surprisingly performs better in Germany as in all French speaking countries including Switzerland.
A further new top 20 hit comes in two places deeper. And it also is an ethno inspired song as Chantaje by Shakira Feat. Maluma presents a pure raggaton beat. It is Shakira's first top20 performance after more or less three years. Back in 2014 she had two hits: Can't Remember To Forget You (featuring Rihanna #8) and Dare (La La La) (#12).

The highest new entry this week comes in at #29. It is the leading single from upcoming album Spirit by Depeche Mode–the 14th album. For Depeche Mode the anouncement of a new album always caused some rush. Where's The Revolution in contrast completely fails. It is the first time since 1983 (album Construction Time Again) that a pre-release of an Depeche Mode album misses the top 20. Maybe it will change in next weeks time when the full effect of the video release drops some more demand in the song. So far it is the 52nd chart entry for the band–a feat done by only a few acts in chart history.

The gainers of the week are:
Despacito by Luis Fonsi Ft. Daddy Yankee going up 46 places (second biggest jump this year so far) to #47
Weak by AJR leaping 26 places to #52 in its second week
Dancing On My Own in the version of Calum Scott rising 16 places to a new peak at #64 in its sixth chart week

14th of February 2014:

Another week we see Pharrell Williams Happy about being No.1 in Germany. It is the fifth week at the Top which means Happy is the longest standing No.1 for the singer. Additionally his total of number 1 weeks is 11 which makes him as successful as AVICII. Only Rihanna had more in this decade: a full 16 weeks at the Top since January 1st 2010.

REVOLVERHELD finally has a fourth Top 10 hit with Ich lass für dich das Licht an rising 11–7. The new demand comes due to its release on CD. According to chart position the song already has overtaken Halt dich an mir fest which is so far the most sold single of the band. The highest position REVOLVERHELD gained with Helden 2008 in exactly that year.

A fortnight before its release on CD Can't Remember To Forget You goes Top 10. It is Shakira's 11th Top 10 single in Germany – Rihanna performs much better. So far she has 21 Top 10 singles under her belt–matching the result of ABBA. For becoming the act with most Top 10 singles she has to add some more. The all time record still is an unbelievable amount of 36 Top 10 hits set by Caterina Valente between 1954 and 1962–of course only if you count her hits as Club Italia/Indonesia/Honolulu to herself. Otherwise the record is held by Peter Alexander with 35 Top 10 hits under his own name.

Looks like German producer ZEDD right now becomes a mainstream star. His single Stay The Night (featuring Haley Williams of Paramor) enters the Top 20 at number 15 one week ahead of its release as a proper CD single. In the US he already is a star–decorated with an Grammy award as Best Dance Recording for predecessor Clarity three weeks ago.

TV soap Berlin – Tag und Nacht launches a third hit. After Ole (2012) and Chris Prinz (2013) it is now JJ alias Très Jolie who released a production. Bow! (You Gotta Kick It) lands at number 20 which marks the highest position for a track related to the soap.

Single number 4 from AVICII's album True is the track Addicted To You which will be released as full single in April. Already now the track becomes hit status by rising 95–28. Predecessor Hey Brother performs still well inside the Top 20.

DSDS infected hits
Since 8th of January the 11th season of DSDS (Deutschland sucht den Superstar) is aired. So far only jury member Kay One benefitted from the new presence–his hits V.I.P. and Keep Calm Fuck You returned to the list and sneaking through the bottom down regions of the list. This week also Ich hass es dich zu lieben returns to number 91.

The first song performed by a contestant this week gets in the list. It is the ballad When I Look At You originally recorded by Miley Cyrus that returns at number 60. The original chart appearance stopped in August 2010 at number 85–so this is a new peak. The album the song is taken from The Time Of Our Lives is right now digitally re-released. What an impact for a simple TV show.

24th of January 2014: Lazy Week

It is still holidays time in Germany–according to the music business going on. Only five new singles and six re-entries find the way to the list. It is so far the least turnover of the list of the whole month. So the top end looks calm also: The Top 5 is the same as we had last week.

Still Germany is Happy with Pharrell Williams occupying the top position of the singles’ charts. So the artists had all his Nr.1 tracks standing there for at least two weeks, which makes him the most enduring Nr.1 artist in this millenium right behind queen Rihanna.

One week before its release as a full CD single and two weeks before the album release Kids (2 Finger an Kopf) by MARTERIA shows some power. The song first appearing inside the charts one months ago at number 7 returns into the Top 10 at number 9 this week.

In its sixth chart week also the new single from BASTILLE Of The Night catches finally fire. The mashup cover version rises 26–13 giving the band a third Top 20 hit in a row. The official release of the CD single is scheduled for February 4th.

Further on the way up Revolverheld's Ich lass für dich das Licht an stops at number 14 this week. The song looks like it will at least match the so far most successful single of the band Helden 2008 which peaked at number 2 about six years ago.

One of the most influencing hit maker still is youtube. And a still increasing group of artists is the one of comedy couples or trios which also recording songs the so called Generation Youtube. After their first appearance back in September ApeCrime storms the list as the highest new entry this current week with Swing dein Ding. The song lands at number 17 – so far most of that kind of songs disappeared after two weeks latest. Only Y-Titty managed having longer standing hits. The mainstream breakthrough for that generation still did not happen.

By charting at number 20 in its first week Shakira gets her first Top 20 hit since four years with Can't Remember To Forget You. Accompanying Rihanna of course is a star of a very different kind. Her last Top 10 hit still sits pretty at number 11 in the face of The Monster. The new single is her 33rd chart entry in 10 years.

Talking 'bout sleepy music business at the beginning of this post also means: There are well known tracks and artists invading the charts. One of the more significant is the return of 90s star Dr. Alban. A remix of his Europe-wide number 1 hit It's My Life is back in a 2014 remix by The Bodybangers at number 32. 16 years after the singing dentist had its last chart appearance in Germany he is back to the Top 40.

And another band celebrates its chart comeback. First time seen here in 2005 medieval project Schandmaul launches a second chart hit with Euch zum Geleit at number 85. It's a funeral song which brings the band back to mainstream commercial live.

11-12: Hammer Hits?

Nooossaa! Ai Se Eu Te Pego! now is statistically the second most successful hit from the South American continent. By spending a seventh week at the Top Michel Teló’s song ranges right behind Shakira’s Whenever wherever that held a whole 11 weeks at Number 1 in springtime 2002.

The highest new entry this week again is a German one. After two casting show finalists and UNHEILIG’s next success it is now a veteran band that hits the Top 3. die ärzte exist for almost 30 years–they’re chart career spans over the past 25 years. Last time they appeared in the list it was the fourth single from their Number 1 album Jazz ist anders (Jazz Is Different) in late 2009. zeiDverschwÄndung (Waste Of Time) is the first regular offering of new material in the recent decade. By entering at number 3 it extends the span of Top 10 hits to a third decade but it is only their 10th hit reaching the Top 10.

The song itself is self ironically as the best songs of die ärzte. The three really ask “Isn’t it a waste of time being fan of die ärzte?” The answer is clear also: “It isn’t. There’s nothing better to do than adoring the band.”

DSDS Impact
Besides that new entry the chart is completely boring. The only significant chart moves are caused by TV casting Deutschland sucht den Superstar (DSDS). On Saturday, 2nd March the first themed show was aired. Hammerhits (Literally: Hammer Hits meaning of course Super Hits) were announced and it started with a Number 6 hit of real superstar Taio Cruz. He performed with all 10 candidates Troublemaker which gives the underperforming track a slight push back to number 16 in it’s 13th week. The big hammer hit is probably something else.

The great star of the show was this time Fabienne Rothe. She performed Wovon sollen wir träumen the recent hit for German Frida Gold and earned the highest votes of the audience. In the singles charts the original recording takes a leap 77–44 in its 49th chart week. Again the song is a hit but far and away from something to be called hammer like. – Also Silvia Amaru found her fans. With Domino she managed to get voted into the next show (where she had to leave) and propells the original by Jessi J back 87–54.

The romantic guy Jesse Ritch performed another rap ballad: So Sick originally the first hit for ne-yo reaching number 11 in 2006. It gets back at number 91. So far the story of what DSDS calls the most hammering hits.

The sport event of the weekend of 3rd March was the fight Klitchko vs. Mormeck. Some boxing fans told me the French man could have had fight the Ukrainian champion. Well, when I was watching the fight it never seemed so in any second. A musical traces left by the spectacle is the re-appearance of Klitchko’s entrance anthem: Can’t Stop by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Last time it swashed in the list the track gained its highest position ever. Now the charm of the tune is faded a bit–it lands at number 60 which still is the third highest position for the recording.

A last note besides at the end of this weeks column: with Stefanie Heinzmann climbing to number 20 we have two Swiss productions inside the German Top 20 which doubles the situation of last years September. Back than DJ Antoine and Mike Candys were the lucky acts. A few weeks later in November we had a whole five Swiss productions inside the German Top 100. This week they are still four. The small country right now establishes itself as a quarry of sucessful music. Just have a look at the origin of DSDS contestants …

chart flash 11-24: LMFAO and an omnipresent Pitbull

Finally the Europe wide hit Party Rockl Anthem also enters the number 1 in Germany. US American electro duo LMFAO already had the top spot in Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France,Ireland, Switzerland and in the UK (see statistics at acharts.us) – the world charts see them rising to number 3. It took the project six week to get on top – that’s not really unusual. The last track taking more than a month for climbing to Germany’s best sold single was The Time (Dirty Bit) by The Black Eyed Peas that set Germany under fire at the very beginning of the recent year.

It is the very first number 1 hit for LMFAO in German speaking area. They first appear exactly one year ago alongside David Guetta, Chris Willis & Fergie whit the track Gettin’ Over You that spent 27 weeks in the German list climbing up to number 15. In Austria it went to number 4 – the UK saw them shooting to number 1 for the very first time. In 2011 the so far hiatus of their career seems achieved. Follow up single Champagne Showers right now arrived in the UK list – all I can say the mood for another electro smash summer hit by LMFAO seems very likely.

Another steadily rising strong electro hit arrives at number 2 with Give Me Everything – the track presented by all star collaboration Pitbull feat. NE-Yo, Afrojack & Nayer. It is the 7th week for the track in the German list. Will it rise a place further next week?
Pitbull also occupies number 3 alongside JLO. On The Floor spends its 13th week inside the Top 10 and we can name it for sure as one of the big hits of this year.

Pitbull once again: He also appears newly in the chart at Shakira’s latest single Rabiosa where he is featured. Number 26 for the seventh track charting in 2011 with at least a guest appearance of the Cuban-American rap star.

Rising to number 4 Alexandra Stan with Mr. Saxobeat equals the result of fellow countryman Edward Maya from last year. For the first time in German pop history two years in a row see at least one Top 10 hit coming from an Romanian artist. Maybe we have to watch that country as a deliverer of summer dance pop for the next time.

Highest new entry this week is San Francisco the new single of cascada released as a teaser for follow up album Original Me. It is the well known mixture of dance pop – a new tone is the very clear voice of Natalie Horler sothat one really can follow the lyrics. (which is not necessary anyway – bubbly dance pop dream with a reference to the good old times of 1969 ... did we had eurodance music then?)

One last story for today. Recent superstar Pietro Lombardi now tumbles down in the official sales charts also. Call My Name stops at number 7 coming from the top – it is the deepest fall from number 1 since Tokio Hotel touched down to number 7 with Übers Ende der Welt in February 2007. The album chart lists Pietro Lombardi still at number 1 – so all fans of casting pop might be calmed down. The world still turns the right way.

New Beginning

Well – after a few months break I am back again with some very subjective words about what's going on in Germany's music market.

First of all: Israel "IZ" Kamakawiwo'ole is still on top with his version of Over The Rainbow. Well – it's his 7th week on top and he is now joining Yolanda Be Cool & DCUP as the track most noted at the very top in 2010. The question now is: will IZ be the track with the highest sales performance next week too? Or will the strongly rising Empire Of The Sun overtake him with We Are The People newly discovered by a lot of people cause of its use in a commercial spot for a mobile company and jumping 22 – 3 this recent week. Rihanna's Only Girl In The World seems to be the everlasting runner's up position track.

Best CD Starts
This week's (sales start at Friday 5th of november) winner is Raise Your Glass by P!NK. The track is taken from her upcoming Best Of-Album and serves the crowd with well known sing-along pop rock. It immediately starts its chart run at nr.5 - highest position since Sober invaded the list almost exactly two years ago and the first top 10 hit after one and a half year.

With only a few sold units less the new Shakira Loca enters the market and the charts. The track was taken from her new album Sale El Sol which entered the album charts a few weeks before. As P!NK the Columbian star is one of the most successfull artists in Germany. The actual battle of their recent tracks mirrors the stand of their commercial success. Well Shakira has four Nr.1 singles under her belt but P!NK leads the statistic with 13 Top 10 hits (three more than Lady Shakira).

The real winner of Loca is small credited British grime star Dizzee Rascal. Accompanying already with Armand Van Helden or Calvin Harris he did not manage it to become a proper music star in Germany. Let's take a look into the British charts. There Dizzee Rascal is one of the hottest artist in the moment counting six(!) Nr.1 hits on his merits, two of them plus a proper nr.2 hit alone in 2010. Finally he gots here some more attention and you could cross your fingers that Loca could be the start for a coming carreer as a main artist here too.

"Looser" of the week are - hmmm - Take That. The 90s super boy group are reunited! But nobody really cares. The collaboration between Robbie Williams and Gary Barlow already failed a few weeks before entering the top 10. Now the proper first single of the group in their original cast miss the top 10 also. The Flood only manages to enter the charts at 12. Even worse - in their home country the United Kingdom they miss the nr.1 slot. British chart commentator James Masterton resumed in a very good way the rise (and fall) of the reunited superstars.
Well - in Germany Take That never made such an astonishing impact. They only had two nr.1 singles and three others entering the German top 10. Complained with that The Flood performs not that bad. It is indeed the best selling track of the band since they reappeared (without Robbie) in 2006.
Robbie Williams alone is much more beloved in Germany. Three nr.1 tracks and nine other tracks entering the top 10 is a clear statement. So maybe he should as soon as possible leave his mates again and release some new solo stuff.

OK - these are the very new CDs in this week. Not bad. We had a very long time in which only a few tracks made it new to the top 20 or higher. Maybe this new occupation means that we can expect some more movement the next few weeks until shortly before Christmas which is in Germany usually a very quiet time - even in music business.

04th of June 2010: First summer time charts

The official german chart compiling company speaks about a football and summer time ruled hit list. Indeed the very top of the charts looks like we had holiday time right now. Nr. 1 is still the FIFA championship anthem Wavin’ Flag by K’NAAN heavily promoted by a soft drink company. Straight to nr. 2 a superstar duo shoots. Recent winner of Germany’s Idol Mehrzad Marashi is accompanied by the winner of 2007 Mark Medlock for turning the biggest hit of Jamaican band Inner Circle Sweat (a la la la la long) into a smooth 2010 tropical island pop song. The original was a huge succes in 1992 climbing to nr. 1 in Germany, Switzerland , The Netherlands and New Zealand. Although it holded 12 weeks at the top spot I never was a friend of that track. Maybe I'm a little too old fashioned for really enjoying lyrics like "Girl I want to make you sweat / Sweat till you can't sweat no more / And if you cry out / I'm gonna push it some, mo-o-ore …" (Thanks to Lyricfreaks for typing these words properly) – you could be assured I really love sexy tunes with explicit lyrics as well. In the case of Inner Circle / Marashi+Medlock I think it misses the mutual lust and desire. It's all about what the horny one man wants to do … maybe he should use a puppet for calming down.

Well my opinion won't avoid getting Sweat (a la la la la long) a hit again. With strong support of TV the superstar duo is almost unstopable. The CD single was released on 21st of May – at 23rd they both had the chance of presenting it in Germany's very popular saturday night show Wetten dass…? which gave the single the final boost. Next week we will see the version for sure as high as this time cause the TV promotion did not end. On 29th both performed the song before the fight of Vitali Klitschko and Albert Sosnowski a huge media event in Germany as Wetten dass…? or the ESC are too. – By the way Lena actually ranking at nr.7 could show up at the very top of the german chart again after winning the contest and becoming a national hero immediately.

Do you like some statistics? Ok here are. Mehrzad Marashi becomes now the most successful newcomer in 2010 by hitting straight to nr.1 and 2 in a row. Lena "only" does a nr.1 and nr. 3 strike. Additionally Mehrzad is the most successfull DSDS act since Mark Medlock won in 2007. Latter one collects with Sweat his eighth top 5 hit in row – a serie last time shown by Tokio Hotel between 2005 and now. Mark Medlock is by now the most succesfull german casting star of all times.

The next ultimate holiday (and football) song is entering the top 10 at position 6 with Shakira Featuring Freshlyground climbing 7 places after full CD release of Waka Waka (This Time For Africa). It's quiet amazing how huge the influence of physical sales actually is. As media control informed a few days ago 85% of all track sales are digital. Anyhow one can always recognise in the list when the physical equivalent enters the market. The german media control launched a very sophisticated point system which refers to the price paid for a track not the amount. That's why the german charts are slightly old fashioned rating the physical sale higher than the digital.

Shakira doesn't mind for sure. Waka Waka (This Time For Africa) is her 9th top 10 success in the german list.

Finally entering the top 10 and fitting very well the holiday topic MEDINA from Denmark pushing her hit You And a single place to number 10. The track is an amazing and hypnotic dance track even more fascinating the more you listen to it. Actually You And I was the background for Pro7 station ID spot in May – repeated use guaranteed.

Just to complete the top 3: Sido feat. Adel Tawil sliding down one place with Der Himmel soll warten. These collaboration maybe one of the not holiday or football related tracks at the top.

More soccer related sound

Well three weeks before the world championship people in Germany are going crazy for football hymns. The one promoted by a global beverage company enters nr.1 position with K'NAAN and Wavin' Flag. Other songs crowding up the list right now too.

At the second place of the internal football list Shakira Featuring Freshlyground appears with Waka Waka (This Time For Africa). A typical Shakira-recording comobined with a little more ethno sound from southafrican group. Waka Waka is set to be the official anthem of the FIFA event. Seems that this championship will getting a completely multicultural spirit. Waka Waka was released on May 7th as an download track in Germany but it took a whole week until the track really found his buyers. Now enters no.13 in the official media control charts by downloads only. A further climb is estimated next week when fully released CD sellings will count to the list as well.

Number 3 of the list is the anthem of Bavarian football club Bayern München. On May 15th the club won for the 15th time the German Bundesliga. Of course all the fans were celebrating and purchasing the definitive song for the club Stern des Südens. Surprisingly the track jumps now more than 12 years after its first release to its new peak position at nr. 42. Its former peak was nr. 67 reached in 1998. Does that really mean the demand for football anthems is now bigger?

Facing the other big anthem for a football club you might answer: Yes. For You recorded by The Disco Boys feat. Manfred Mann's Earth Band is officially used as the entry song for Borussia Dortmund since last season 2008/09. With every high of the team and at the end of the national round the song returns to the charts. Meanwhile For You has collected 93 chart weeks under its belt – it's the second longest runner within the german charts of all time only beaten by DJ Ötzi. With the close of this season the track will disappear for sure. But for sure the next one will lift the track up again. Promised.

Not really a soccer anthem - but almost – Scooter delivered with Stuck On Replay the official anthem of the IIHF world championship which took place in Germany in May. The week ending on 14th May saw the relegating round taking place and a raising excitement. So Scooter's mass compatible track gains some new fans again. First the track charted on 26th of March at position 34 sliding slowly down to nr. 86 the following weeks. Since three weeks the track is climbing now entering the Top 50 again. It's the highest place since end of April and expect some more as playoff round and final are still not in account at the recent list. Seems that Stuck On Replay is on the way to something what did not happened to Scooter for three years – a track charting more than 11 weeks.

At the lower end of the list one can find some more football related songs waiting for the big event to come and than … rising up to proper heigths. So expect to see soon at higher levels Oliver Pocher with 2010 Wir gehen nur zurück um Anlauf zu nehm' (We just step back to startup again; recently nr. 60) and the again climbing new take of Sportfreunde Stiller on its former number 1 hit '54, '74, '90, 2010 (the original title was '54, '74, '90, 2006) now at nr. 78.

11. Dezember 2009: Neue Nr.1 - The Black Eyed Peas

Seit 27.

All I Want For Christmas Is You.

Do They Know It's Christmas?.

Single von a-ha Nothing Is Keeping You Here, die bereits seit dem 20.

Bereits die vierte Veröffentlichung lanciert er mit How Does It Feel in diesem Jahr.

Nun also der deutsche Markt.

If A Song Could Get Me You.

September erscheint (also jetzt).

Hmmm … trotzdem geiler Track.
