April 29th 16: In memoriam Prince

It is a second week at the top for SIA Feat. Sean Paul and their Cheap Thrills. It makes SIA the most successfull Australian act since Gotye topped the German list for five weeks in January 2012 with his Somebody That I Used To Know. Sean Paul beats an even longer mark. He is now the first Jamaican artist spending at least two weeks at the German top since 40 years. In November/December 1974 it was Carl Douglas who spent seven weeks at #1 with his Kung Fu Fighting. In between Shaggy and OMI only had one week peaks at the very top.

Talking 'bout nationality of artists #2 sets new marks as well. It is One Dance by Kanadian DRAKE featuring Nigerian Wizkid and British Kyla that rises further four places and serves as a big candidate for #1 next week. It is the biggest hit for DRAKE anyway and the best performance for an artist coming from Nigera since summer 1992 when Dr. Alban hit the top with It's My Life. Of course latter one had his center of life already in Sweden–so one could count that song as a European as well and WizKid the first Nigerian artist hitting the runners up position in Germany ever.

Highest new entry comes of course due to the sudden death of Prince. Celebrated as one of the most genius artists of the 80s (and later) his mainstream success on the singles market ain't that impressive. 35 chart hits (including six as The Symbol), the highest peaking at #4 and a total of 348 chart weeks (including 67 as The Symbol) in a little more than 30 years–well, it is a feat although still far and away from the likes of Michael Jackson or Madonna. Anyway Prince is one of icons of 80s pop music. Exactly 10 years after his last chart appearance his signature song Purple Rain re-enters the list at #13–in November 1984 it peaked at #5.
His biggest hit Kiss comes in at #29 again–in 1986 it achieved #4 spending 17 weeks inside the list and was covered two years later by Tom Jones adding further 18 weeks peaking at #16.
The first song of Prince ever inside the German list was when doves cry entering in August 1984 at #54–it rose up to #18 after a few weeks. Now it is back at #49.
The eldest Prince song re-entering this week is 1999. Originally released in 1982 it became a #2 hit in Britain two years later and first entered the German charts in (sic!) January 1999. This week it lands at #75 which is the highest place it ever achieved.

One fact has to be told here yet: With only 61 songs appearing European artists this is the lowest presence since October 31st 2014. It stands in total contrast to the high presence of past summer. How fast things change!

April 22nd 16: SIA & Sean Paul Are Going #1

What a race! On the midweek survey still Faded by Alan Walker led the list. But ten weeks at the top made the demand shrinking and on the other hand Cheap Thrills by SIA Feat. Sean Paul attract more and more people. So there is a change at the very top of the German charts ending a 50 weeks long presence of European acts at #1.

Cheap Thrills is the first #1 for both SIA and Sean Paul. The Australian singer had her first chart appearance four and a half year ago alongside David Guetta. So this career looks quite usual. In contrast Sean Paul has an already 13 years long chart history under his belt which really is a long way. Of course it ain't unique–remembering Daft Punk reaching the top after 16 years on charts three years ago?

A nice statistical fact at the end: Sean Paul is only the fifth Jamaican artist topping the charts in Germany. Last one was OMI who a year ago had his Cheerleader climbing to the top after remixed by Felix Jaehn.

The change at the top is backed up with three new songs inside the top 10. It seems there is a seasonal change going on bringing us a bunch of new hits for upcoming spring time. First of all DRAKE's new offering jumps to the upper end at the charts. One Dance lands at #6 in its second chart week and falls only one place short of Drake's only top 10 appearance so far Work (alongside Rihanna) that showed up a few weeks ago.
Of course DRAKE is not alone on his new single. Featured artist Wizkid now is the first Nigerian inside the German top 10 since 15 years. Back in 2001 it was Adé Bantu who as a member of Brothers Keepers gained #5 with Adriano (Letzte Warnung).

Arrival number 2 is Don't Let Me Down by The Chainsmokers Ft. Daya. The producers already had their first chart hit two years ago with #Selfie. Now they proof that they're more than a one hit wonder. Singer Daya right in this moment starts grabbing some attention with her special performance.
And also #10 is a complete newcomer. Era Istrefi is the first Albanian singer reaching the German Top10. BonBon lands here in its fifth chart week.

Some places below a further future hit shows up. Howling At The Moon jumps 37 places to #18. For singer Milow this is the first top20 appaerance since five years.

Highest new entry comes from P!NK. Just Like Fire is a song taken from the score to Alice Through The Looking Glass and lands in its first week at #32. It is P!NK's 32nd chart hit in Germany and her 15th in this decade alone. #32 is the highest performance for her since her #1 song Just Give Me A Reason (duetting with Nate Ruess) in spring 2013.

A jump of 32 places–which means it is the second biggest gainer–SEX by Cheat Codes X Kris Kross Amsterdam makes. Probably this will be one of spring dance tunes 2016.
The third biggest gainer lands at #69 in the face of Andrea Berg. Her single Diese Nacht ist jede Sünde wert jumps 29 places meanwhile her album Seelenbeben spends a second week at the top of the album's list. The single already had a peak at #44 two months ago and is the highest charting single of the singer at all.

With Are You With Me by Lost Frequencies leaving the list after 64 weeks now the longest running hit is Lean On by Major Lazer X DJ Snake Feat. Mø. The song sits pretty at #59 in its 59th chart week and now enters the top 20 of longest running hits in the recent decade.

13rd of Feb 15:

The number 1 comes originally from Jamaica. It is Cheerleader by OMI that grabs the crown due to the remix by Hamburg DJ Felix Jaehn.
It is a similar situation like last time a Jamaican artist was number 1. In 2008 it was Shaggy who had the honour being number 1 for a week with Feel The Rush. The song was the official anthem of the European Football Championship so the release was officially credited to Trix & Flix the two mascots of the championship.
