17-12: Long selling casting show tracks

There is a new number 1 single in Germany. Alex Clare rises two places and sees his Too Close shining at the top spot. The soundtrack of the Internet Explorer commercial is the first dubstep number 1 in Germany. So it took the style more than two years to achieve the success it has already in his home country Britain.

Having a new number 1 means Olly Murs & Rizzle Kicks have to clear the way. Heart Skips A Beat tumbles impressive six places to number 7. It is the deepest fall off the number 1 position since Pietro Lombardi did so in June last year after his Call My Name occupied the top spot for four weeks.

Further Top 10 action
Now they are 30. Die Toten Hosen had their very first performance on 10th April 1982. Of course a lot of papers, radios and TV stations celebrated that anniversary with stories and specials. The huge media presence helps lifting the actual Hosen single to number 2. It is the biggest jump inside the Top 10.

The hot phase of the DSDS casting started on 14th April when the last four aspirants performed for qualification to the next round. The most succesful performance in chart terms actually was again the one of Jesse Ritch who offered a version on She doesn’t Mind which is a recent hit by Sean Paul. After the Saturday night show the single got a sales boost landing again at number 3 in its 11th week inside the Top 10. Poor Jesse had to leave the show a week later.

Of course also other DSDS candidates made their impact on the charts. Again a Top 20 hit is Eiserner Steg by Philipp Poisel. Luca Hänni–one of the big favourites and finally the winner–performed the song and caused the second big demand for the original single. Back in January the song reached number 4 after Benny Fiedler performed the song on The Voice of Germany. A week later the contestant was voted off the show … Luca Hänni had a completely different destiny.

Also the songs chosen by Luca for the category pop and rock reach the list after his performance. Beautiful People originally recorded by Chris Brown & Benny Benassi so far collected 25 chart weeks with a peak at number 30. Now it is back at number 42. Respect! The rock song Chasing Cars already collected 64 weeks in 14 chart runs. For sure that’s the reason why we see the original recording by Snow Patrol only sneak in the list at the lowest end.

Speaking about songs with many chart runs we can switch to the next contestant. Daniele Negroni helps the Kings_Of_Leon back in the charts. Sex_On_Fire charted a month ago last when Use Somebody re-appeared after a performance by combatant Luca Hänni. After Daniele staged with Sex_On_Fire the song jumps back to number 41 which is the highest position since three years. All in all the track now enters the list for the 13th time and slowly approaches the all time record set by Last Christmas in the version of Wham! which charted 16 times in its career. Another song joins the drop in drop out statistic at the top: Das Beste by Silbermond had 14 chart runs.

German productions
Best new single start this week comes from Monrose singer Mandy Capristo. First she appeared at the end of last year alongside Peter Maffay on his sixth Tabaluga album. Now she comes with an own song collection from which The Way I Like It is the first single. It is a well penned pop song written and produced by David Jost who also is the man behind number 1 singles Geronimo by Aura Dione and I Like by Keri Hilson. The Way I Like It is much softer and fits perfectly the mainstream radio sound. So it probably has chances of becoming a real hit. Mandy Capristo might have some hopes for a longer solo career after this start.

Next significant move comes from German Baku star Roman Lob. The song Standing Still so far performed … annoying. After a good start at number 3 it tumbled out of the Top 20 sliding down to number 45. That drop was “supported” by the strange release policy for the video. Some days it was blocked – a few days it was available only on some special platforms … A month before the Eurovison contest his debut album Changes is in stores and can reach number 9 on the album list. The album gives the single a boost again and that jumps to number 19 which is the second highest ranking so far for the song. Let’s wait another four weeks when the contest is over and we’ll see the single flying to better heights probably.

Also Die Ärzte (The Doctors) have a new album in stores. auch (also) storms to Number 1 directly and lifts the single zeiDverschwÄndung (Waste of Time) back into the upper half of the survey.

A pre prime time serial gets more and more attention. Berlin – Tag & Nacht (Berlin–Night & Day) is something in between Big Brother and a regular daily soap. It is the story of people who share a flat in Berlin. The soap started back in September past year achieving only low rates. Already at the end of the year the interest was pretty high and even now the amount of followers rises staedily. There are actual reports seeing the soap overtaking such formats like the soft science magazine Galileo and the long time soap Alles was zählt (All That Matters). One of the song featured on Berlin – Tag & Nacht is ECHT by duo Glasperlenspiel. Since the start of the soap the track sneaks through the list peaking at number 9. This week it jumps again 95–73 in its 32nd chart week.

European Stuff
What works for German productions also does for international ones. Morten Harket offered his single Scared Of Heights which entered the list two weeks ago at number 48. Then it dropped as low as number 92 for bouncing back now to number 60 cause of the release of his album Out Of My Hands which debuts at an overwhelming number 3.

Spanish Sak Noel comes with part II of his Crazy Society trilogy. The formula does work in clubs. The mainstream isn’t that much infected as Paso (The Nini Anthem) starts its chart life at number 66.

How British acts are released in Germany is always a thing very hard to understand. example had a hit in Germany with Changed The Way You Kiss me in autumn 2011. It was the first appearance in German charts for the producer. Now Kickstarts was released as a single. It is a convincing and cool song of course. Anyway I don’t understand why Vertigo/UNIVERSAL decided to promote this track as the next single. Well, it was the most successful track of the 2010 album Won’t Quietly in Britain. Releasing older singles after a hit is quite common–but does this decision really makes sense? Wouldn’t it be much better to release the second British number 1 hit Stay Awake? A&R people for sure know what they do. example so far sees his second chart hit enter at a very low number 72. Hopefully soon the label will find a better strategy for promoting his tracks.

French DJ and producer Martin Solveig has a new offering available. After he had produced for Madonna some tracks he should be counted as one of the big players in business. His E.P. The Night Out does not fully match that expectation. After two weeks on sale as download album it sneaks in the list at number 99.

16-12: German Spring Tiredness

Another quiet week. Seven days ago there were only six new singles and two known chart hits entering the list–the fewest turn around in 2012 so far. This week there is only one new song more entering the charts. Shall we call it spring lazyness? In 2011 and 2010 we had similar pictures. Issues seeing only eight, nine or ten songs entering the charts newly or as a re-entry are common in April.

As lazy as the full survey is the Top although there is a change. Heart Skips A beat by Olly Murs feat. Rizzle Kicks returns there for a second week. It stalled one week at runners up position–now it is back in its whole glory. We already know that situation of two number one hits kicking each other off the top spot. Last time Aura Dione and Keri Hilson battled for having the most sold track at the back end of 2009. I Will Love You Monday (365) and I Like twisted around for four complete weeks.

Most obvious hart action once again is caused by ongoing casting show DSDS. Most supported song this week is Breathing. The song was performed by Jesse Ritch on the show 5th April. Jason Derulo profits from that performance seeing the song climbing to a new height at number 7. It now matches the peak of his first single Watcha Say back in January 2010. By the way: also DJ Frank E celebrates the highest peak of a song produced by him with the new climb of Breathing.

Also the second song performed by Jesse Ritch can find a way into the list. It is eight years old Breathe Easy by British boy group BLUE that now finds some new buyers and lands at number 84. Fabienne Rothe pushes Someone Like You originally recorded by Adele and Daniele Negroni gives Cello a boost which makes Udo Lindenberg feat. Clueso climbing 17 places back in the upper half of the list.

European acts
Music coming from Iceland is always kind of special. Most popular singer of the small island in the north is of course Björk. But there are several acts invading the continent over the past years with much more commercial success. Now Of Monsters And Men starts becoming popular. Their song Little Talks was heavily featured in the US and now approaches Europe too. The easy pop song is the first Icelandic hit since Emílíana Torrini stormed to Number 1 with her Jungle Drum in July 2009.

Focus German songs
Most successfull single start offered by a German act comes in at number 56. It is a strange feeling seeing LUXUSLÄRM Featuring Culcha Candela. The band from Iserlohn so far released powerful rock songs. Mehr Gewicht (More Weight) is a complete different sound: very pop oriented with sing-a-long refrain. Indeed it is the highest charting song for the band so far although no single ever managed to climb to the upper half of the survey. The song is against the crazy desire of being thin like a super model. Added rap part provided by Berlin culcha candela is strange as they always praise the perfect body of a girl. Here they explicitly call more shaped bodies sexy. Too me it stands kind of in contrast to other lyrics. Well, maybe the guys changed their mind–the sound didn’t change at all and I find the rap part more than needless. Hopefully LUXUSLÄRM will continue its career on their own. Or at least with collaborations much more matching their sound and attitude.

A book caused a sales boost for Adele’s songs. Or is it just a strange coincidence? – March 1st the first German biography of the British singer and million selling artist was published. The same week Rolling In The Deep can rise eight places, Set Fire To The Rain climbs a full 25 places and–much more impressive–Rumour Has It enters the survey. The song was the official last single but never released in Germany. Nevertheless now it is a hit on ist own landing at number 68 in Germany.

15-12: DSDS Returns To Power

It is only one week missing for Michel Teló and his hit Nooossaa! Ai Se Eu Te Pego! to match the all time record of being the longest running Number 1 hit in Germany coming from South America. This week the track rebounds to the top sum up its total to 10 weeks there.

After some weak episodes of recent DSDS season the casting show returns to old power. All of the significant moves at the top end of the list are somehow related to the show aired on 31st of March.

The strongest impact comes from a performance by contestant Daniele Negroni which generates an instant Top 5 hit. He staged with Forgive Forget–the recent single of Mando Diao side project CALIGOLA. It storms 26–4 giving the Swedish boys their second Top 10 hit in Germany after Dance With Somebody stalled at runners up position in 2009.

Highest new German production coming in at 13 is the new offering of cascada. Singer Natalie Horler one of the jurors of DSDS. Her dance project uses that advantage and is gonig to bring a new album in shops. Summer Of Love is the official single teaser. All in all it uses heavily well known dance formulas which makes the track a bit boring.

Although Summer Of Love is the highest new German track it is only the fourth most sold German productions. The small “invasion” of the last days emerged a strong presence at the top end of the survey led by Die Toten Hosen and their 30 anniversary single Tage wie diese (Days Like These) at number 6.

A big climber into the Top 20 is Gambling Man by Irish-British band The Overtones. It is used as the signet song for the new launched TV channel RTL Nitro. Right before the start of the channel the band performed on DSDS. As result the single jumps 30–16 in its second chart week.

Further stuff coming from Germany
UNHEILIG released the title track of the album Lichter der Stadt (Lights of the City) as full CD single. The song so far sneaked around as digital album cut. Now it jumps to number 31 in its third chart week. It is so far the second worst performing single of the band. Only the very first single An deiner Seite (On Your Side) released in 2008 before the big success of Geboren um zu leben ranked lower (position 49).

Sometimes it takes a little longer for gaining success. German-Swiss female duo BOY is the lates example of how a TV commercial campaign can bring broader attention. Theiy released their debut single Little Numbers back in September last year. It was highly anticipated by blogs and newspapers. A lot of people added the song to their playlists but the song never made it being a hit. It stalled at number 71 vanishing after four short weeks from the list. Instead the album Mutual Friends rose to number 9 inside the album charts. I guess that’s what one should call a good start. A few weeks ago German airline Lufthansa launched their new TV campaign linking the line with sweet owls and the sound of BOY. With airing the spot demand in the song rose again. Last week Little Numbers re-entered the list at 88 after an half year absence. This recent week the track climbs to number 71 matching the peak of last September.

The longest selling single of now is Sky And Sand by Paul & Fritz Kalkbrenner coming from the movie Berlin Calling. The track became kind of an anthem of recent club life and made the brothers popular even to a mainstream audience. Paul turned that stardom into a number 2 album last summer. Fritz seems much more being a single star. His instrumental club tune WES was spread to the floor last November. It took a long long way for reaching the masses. This recent week it starts officially its chart life entering the list at number 73. Besides the title track the full EP contains also a track called Layer Cake.

Probably the most successfull femal German star is Helene Fischer. So far she sold over 2 million albums, she got her own TV show and her wax copy was raised at Madame Tussauds Berlin in last November. The single for upcoming summer is Die Hölle morgen früh. The song starts at number 74. Usually that kind of Schlager sound disappears very fast.

A significant new European production comes from the singer of a-ha. Morten Harket releases a second album named Out Of My Hands which is in shelves right now. The single teaser Scared Of Heights was released two weeks ago. With bride TV promotion the single lands at number 48 which is the best solo ranking for the Norwegian singer so far.

14-12: Echo Award supports German Music

After nine weeks sneaking through the Top 10 and three weeks at runners up position finally Heart Skips A Beat by Olly Murs feat. Rizzle Kicks enters the Number 1. It is the first British number 1 in Germany since we saw Calvin Harris (alongside Rihanna) topping the list in November/December last year. Taking such a long climb before getting the chart crown is quite unusual. The last track doing so was technically We Are The People by Australian Empire Of The Sun in late 2010. They reached the number 1 in their 14th week if one count all chart weeks together. In fact it was the second chart run of the song and in that one the track only needed 5 weeks. So, if we watch out for a “real” sleeping Number 1 hit we have to go back to January 2006 when Marlon Roudette’s first project Mattafix reached Number 1 with Big City Life in its 15th chart week. That track had a three weeks run at the top spot afterwards.

With number one predecessor reaching the top in its eighth chart week we have a very slow and relaxed first quartal of the year concerning the top hits.

Highest new entry and newcomer of the week is German rapper CRO. He became known last your through the net releasing tracks, mixtapes and videos fo free. In January he signed to a major publisher–probably he now is sick of producing for nothing. The first single released still is on his label Chimperator. Easy was a net hit in last autumn already. It is indeed an easy track quoting softly the refrain of Boney M.’s Sunny which was a number 1 hit in 1976. Never the tune was used that relaxed.

CRO could become the very first German internet star with a longer career. In the US or UK it is quite usual seeing young musicians start as independent net stars signing a big deal and releasing proper CDs. In Germany that practise is new to most labels. CRO could be the one who changes everything. Number 2 for his debut.

Right behind new comer CRO a veteran band lands with a new single. Die Toten Hosen already celebrate their 30th anniversary. Tage wie dieser (Days Like This) is the 39th single that can reach the charts. Number 3 is even the second highest rank a track offered by the band can reach. The band had huge support by performing on the show of the ECHO award ceremony. The announced album will give the single probably a further boost a few weeks later. For now it is quite interesting seeing how the song performs on sale. Most of the single of Die Toten Hosen started more or less strong and had lose commercial power very fast.

Having two new German songs at the very top of the list gives the recent issue three Top 10 hits in German. It is a situation last seen in October last year.Back then we had four German productions inside the Top 10.

Further German songs benefitting from the Echo award ceremony can be found inside the Top 20. Chemnitz based KRAFTKLUB jumps 30 places reaching number 14 with Songs für Liam. Silbermond comes back to number 19 with Himmel auf.

At number 37 a German legend comes back in the list. Cologne band BAP exists already 35 years. They have had chart hits over the past 30 years, only once they reached the Top 10. At the award ceremony they performed All die Augenblicke (All this Moments) accompanied by Clueso. The track enters at number 37 giving the band its highest chart place since 2001.

Winner of the Newcomer trophy Tim Bendzko can watch his hit Nur noch kurz die Welt retten rising again. It lands at number 47 in its 44th chart week. Wenn Worte meine Sprache wären re-enters at number 77. It is "only" the 25th week in the list.

All in all there are 34 German productions inside the Top 100. Actually nobody can say German music needs to be more supported and featured.

On April the 1st a new TV channel started in Germany.RTL NITRO broadcasts serials, movies and sitcoms. For advertising the start of its broadcasting British-Irish The Overtones were casted as testimonials. Their song Gambling Man reaches the list at number 30 a week before the channel was on air.

13-12: Switzerland vs. Eurodance

Nine weeks at the Top of Germany’s official singles charts. That’s what Brazilian Michel Teló is collecting so far with his anthem Nooossaa! Ai Se Eu Te Pego!. Nine weeks at the top–such a feat was last seen in October and November 2010 when Israel “IZ” Kamakawiwo’ole occupied the top slot for 10 consecutive weeks with his version on Over The Rainbow. An impressive hit at that time, still loved and often played, still ranging in the survey from time to time–last seen the week before at number 83. Anyway the singer is a one hit wonder in statistical terms. No other song recorded by him reached the singles list. Prospects are similar for Michel Teló. Having a huge hit often means to an artist that she/he is connected with that one song forever and never can offer something else that finds new friends. Good news are: the singer approaches the all time record for an act coming from South America. Shakira only is two more weeks ahead with her Nr.1 hit Whenever Wherever.

At number 3 a progress within the last 9 months comes to a new hiatus. Mike Candys Ft. Evelyn & Patrick Miller are the highest entering act at all and the next Swiss production landing in the German Top 10. 2012 ‘If The World Would End’ is the first one since DJ Antoine brought Welcome To St. Tropez to number 3 in August last year. Since than we had a couple of dance productions made in Switzerland invading the German list. Right now we have three Swiss acts inside the German Top 20–me personally don’t know when we had a situation like that the last time.

Further down the survey the DJ who started that little Swiss invasion a year ago comes in with a new track. This time DJ Antoine had chosen a track offered by Austrian fellow Rene Rodrigezz. Shake 3x also features the vocals of Austrian MC Yankoo who sounds like an European Pitbull. In Austria the track already was a hit in last September. In Germany it is the eighth track featuring a Swiss artist that ranks simultanously in the survey.

TV show of the week 16th to 22nd of March was Schlag den Raab (Beat the Raab) on Saturday 17th. Stefan Raab of course is a big player in TV and music business. He discovered and supported Swiss Stefanie Heinzmann in 2008–still she belongs to the inner circle of the Raab clan. At the show two weeks ago she performed her recent single Diggin’ In The Dirt which makes the sales increasing. The track lands at number 12. Benefitting much more of the appearance on TV Swedish CALIGOLA sees its single Forgive Forget jumping 16 places to number 16 after its performance in the show.

Seeing Swedish House Mafia entering the German list also, music coming from Sweden also making an increasing impact to the German market. Right now one can count four tracks of Swedish acts hanging around–five if one count the Steve Angello production of Taio Cruz’ Troublemaker. That track exactly shows the difference between the Swiss and the Swedish presence. Swedish acts are much more glabally involved. So the new track of the Swedish House Mafia is the soundtrack of the recent Absolut Vodka campaign called Greyhound. The video is an artificial trip into the future. The single lands at number 53.

Let’s have a look at German productions. Still leading the pack is Deichkind with Leider geil ranking at number 9 and Bück dich hoch slightly rising to number 11.

Best new offering coming from Germany is presented by surprising newcomer 2012 Glasperlenspiel (Glass Bead Game). The band continues with a second single Ich bin ich (I Am Me). It is a bubbly pop song reflecting about what is seen of a person by others and what is hide. So the song might tell a lot about modern relationships and love affairs. It starts chart life at 32.

A few places behind rock veteran Udo Lindenberg stops with his third unplugged single. It is 1989 song Reeperbahn in a reworked version as duet with Hamburg Jan Delay. They both performed as a duo twice before.

Further down the list UNHEILIG enters the survey with the title track of new album Lichter der Stadt (Lights Of The City). The album starts its chart life this week right at number one–the title track sneaks in the singles’ list at number 67. The song so far is available only as an album cut. The full CD single is released on 30th of March. Listening to the song one has to admit that UNHEILIG take new pathes. The sound is much more pop oriented. Never before I’ve heard the band that bright and joyfull.

European Dance Stuff seems a topic as four of all new enries fit to that genre.

Before David Guetta became the famous French export DJ it was Bob Sinclar who represented commercially successful club music coming from France. Seven years after his number 1 hit Love Generation the DJ and producer still releases material that can attract at least a bunch of clubbers. It is now a collaboration with Pitbull singer DragonFly and well known Fatman Scoop thatenters the list at number 45. Rock The Boat is kind of an oldschool sound. It completely abstains from rave oriented hook lines and trusts on the refrain and Pitbulls rap part. Of course a main attraction is the beat borrowed from Sweet Dreams by the Eurythmics. Just try out the MashUp by Mike Candys for knowing what I’m talking about.

Pitbull this week also enters the list as a featured artist alongside british singer REDD. He now had already seven tracks in the charts this year which matches the result of Flo Rida so far. Having six tracks in the survey in this recent week Pitbull is the first act in 2012 doing so. Last year David Guetta was the one hanging around in that quantity for 14 weeks, Lena and Amy Winehouse at least managed it for a single week. In long time terms Pitbull is hard on the heels of David Guetta according to how many chart hits he could’ve launched. Having 14 different entries he falls only four tracks short in this decade so far.

German dance cover project Groove Coverage actually works on the 90ies revival. Think About The Way was a hit for rapper Ice MC in 1994. It was kind of a comeback after his first success and a three years pause. All in all it was his second biggest seller. Groove Coverage wants to announce the new album Riot On The Dancefloor with this offering. But number 53 is not the big impact. Although the cover is probably one of their most felicitous it is the second lowest chart placing for a track in the whole chart life of the project.

The new version and the original from 1994

DSDS impacts
Some sites report that viewing figures of recent season are disastrous. According to the impact the show makes on the charts one can attest a fading influence. This week big favourite and everybody’s darling Luca Hänni is the one again who attracted most. His performed song Use Somebody re-enters the list at number 66. It is already the 39th week for the Kings of Leon track. Propelled by the demand in Use Somebody also Sex On Fire can gain some more attention and climb to number 94 again in its 76th chart week.

Second favourite of the show on 17th of March was Daniele Negroni. He performed Oh Jonny by Jan Delay which appears afterwards at number 87 in the singles list.

The very last new entry in the list lands at number 92. It is hiphop made in Austria. Dame raps on what’s about gaming on Pave Low. Although it uses all the clichees of German ghetto hiphop it sounds different to most of rap productions coming from German speaking territory. Probably it makes a difference if one tells stories about the real virtual life than dreaming ‘bout being a hard and tough street kid.
