After half a year of slow rising no.1 hits and finally a four months period of lasting no.1s the picture now changes completely. Last week the number 1 was a straight new entry–this week it is a straight new entry too. A situation last seen in February 2007 when Lied 1 - Stück vom Himmel by Herbert Grönemeyer replaced in its first chart week Übers Ende der Welt by Tokio Hotel that shot to number 1 a week before.
The act in question now is the winner of latest DSDS season Aneta Sablik. Her winning title The One is a eurodance track topping the charts in Germany, Switzerland and Austria. It is the first number 1 hit recorded by an artist with Polish origin.
Still on the rise George Ezra enters the Top3 for the first time with his song Budapest. The artist is the sixth newcomer this year that manages that feat. (Aneta Sablik was the fifth.) The song already collected its 11th chart week.
Two weeks ahead the release of the Coldplay album Ghost Stories a third single called A Sky Full Of Stars is available. The song directly enters the list at number 6 and is only the third Top 10 hit for the British band. The last single entering the Top 10 was Viva La Vida stopping at number 5 in 2008. The big success of the song certainly comes due to the collaboration with Tim Bergling aka AVICII who acts as producer here.
The official charts ain't the detector of the moment. Published with at least one week delay they reflect the hype from two weeks ago. This week one might see it with the nr.1. Actually the star of the moment is Eurovision winner Conchita Wurst. But the contest taken place on 10th of May will only count in two weeks issue of the charts. What one can see now is the hope of the German public for a good result of the German entry Elaiza. Is It Right changes the direction of move and re-enters the Top 10 at number 10. – As we already know the trio failed Europe wide by landing at a disappointing 18th place.
All in all the Top 10 are dominated by European productions. Nine out of ten songs are European which is a result last seen exactly two years ago. In between we also had seen very weak times for European music. In April 2013 there were only one European song invading the Top 10. The song in question back than was Let Her Go by Passenger.
The official superstar was voted on Saturday 3rd of May. The non official superstar had its show on Tuesday 6th of May. Than the third episode of new music show Sing meinen Song was aired featuring cover version of songs of Austrian Andreas Gaballier. The winning cover Amoi seg' ma uns wieder by Xavier Naidoo enters the charts directly at number 12. It is the 35th solo hit for the singer and the 58th chart hit with his appearance. The original also can enter the list and lands at number 18 in its first week. The huge demand propelled the company's decision to publish the song as a single CD too. The release is scheduled for end of May. So far it is the highest rank the Austrian singer ever achieved and it is the highest Austrian track since Klangkarussell's Sonnentanz hit the Top10 a last time in October 2013.
Andreas Gabalier's signature hit lands additionally on number 50 this week–the highest rank since more than a year. Further down at number 70 also one can find So liab hob i di and Zuckerpuppen at number 82.
With She Moves - Far Away available as a full CD single Alle Farben takes a final leap to number 13. If this is the final peak one could resume the deep house wave as slowly fading out. A week before its release as an album Kollegah's title track King bounces back to number 19 accompanied by the first single Alpha which lands at number 20 and AKs im Wandschrank at number 21. All three were resting the week before at number 41, 59 respectively number 63. Be prepared having a real invasion of Kollegah tracks next week.
With DSDS having its final The Voice Kids plays only the second pipe in this week's commercial result. Anyway once again a song performed within the show makes a big leap afterwards. This time it is Say Something by A Great Big World And Christina Aguilera that lands at a new peak on number 36. It is the 13th chart week for that song.
Lindsey Stirling's album Shatter Me goes number 4 on the album list. The title track also can make it into the song list landing at a proper number 59. It is only the second track of the crossover artist that can chart as a standalone track.
Criminal serial Tatort can launch a third chart hit this year. On 4th of May episode Am Ende des Flurs was aired using Dreaming My Dreams With You by country singer Waylon Jennings from 1974. The song can chart in Germany in Austria giving the singer his first and only chart hit in these countries at all.
Still it is Rather Be by Clean Bandit Featuring Jess Glynne that sits pretty at Nr.1 in Germany. It is already the fourth week for that track. Well–the top is very calm. And so are the ranks 2, 3 and 4.
The track bringing some change in the list is Budapest by British new comer George Ezra. After his song is released on CD the track shoots 12–5 in its 9th chart week. It is so far the second highest peak worldwide for the song. Only the Dutch charts report a current number 3.
Three places below the highest new entry comes in. It is the new single by Mando DiaoBlack Saturday that anounces the new album Aelita. It is the second Top 10 single in Germany for the Swedish band and its first chart entry since four years (of course the chart success for Caligola ain’t included).
Two German acts are jumping directly into the Top 20. And they together stand for the sound currently very successful in Germany. The first one comes in at number 10 and it is the third prerelease for Kollegah's upcoming album King. This week the title trackenters the list as the highest track Kollegah ever had launched in the single's charts. It really seems that he is the new king of German gangsta rap. His both predecessors Alpha and AKs im Wandschrank also made it up in the list climbing 30 places each. The second new German song comes in at number 18. After its release as a full digital track She Moves - Far Away jumps from number 70. DJ Alle Farben is the latest of deep house inspired producers who make their luck on that sound invading the music scene since few months.
Casting Show Battle
The question is: Which one is the casting show with most influence. Usually one refers to the TV rates which sees Deutschland sucht den Superstar (DSDS) at number 1. But hard on the heels The Voice Kids follows. Both emerge around 3 Mio. viewers every show aired. But what do TV rates really mean for highly commercial products? What do they mean if the sales of music do not correspond with the rates. That's the question raised against DSDS. RTL so far answers: it doesn't matter anything – there will be a season 2015 for sure. Meanwhile the market celebrates The Voice Kids as the more attractive show. This week a song returns to the list that already had a very proper chart career. Strong by London Grammar spend 23 weeks inside the charts since November 2013 peaking at number 33. On April 18th Saphira, Carlo & Hanna performed the song and propelled it back to the list–up to number 28. This late peak makes the song the slowest burner of 2014 so far–and compared to past three years it is a slow burner indeed. One or two tracks per year did take a similar time. Of course Paul & Fritz Kalkbrenner's Sky And Sand are the far and away the longest sleeping hit peaking in its 83rd chart week in November 2011.
Still on the rise the American Authors can reach the Top 50 with their Best Day Of My Life. The remix by Just A Gent counts in the next chart issue. The full release of the CD single follows May 9th.
It took John Newman's current single Losing Sleep also a while for catching fire and becoming hit status. This week the song rises 82–57 although it is available for more than a month.
Week number four at the German top for MR PROBZ and his Waves. Now Bailando by Loona in late summer 1998 is the last Dutch production that was sitting at number 1 that long for last.
More or less the Top 10 looks very static. More movement might be seen at number 14. Scheduled for CD release on April 18th Budapest by George Ezra climbs to real hit status. He signed a few weeks ago a contract with Sony Music–now the broad marketing machine works and brings him to more publicity in all media. That’s how the business still works.
A very similar sound and atmosphere lands at number 19 in the face of James Blunt. With Heart To Heart released on CD as well the track jumps 14 places. Seems that the fans of the singer are a little conservative in the way they consume music. Underlining that the track got a sales boost on Thursday night (March 27th). Then the ECHO award ceremony took place and one of the highlights was the duet by James Blunt and Helene Fischer who sang Heart To Heart.
More ECHO effect on the list:
Decorated with an award Swedish producer and DJ AVICII also shows new strength in the list. Wake Me Up! goes 59–42, Hey Brother 44-41 and his current hit Addicted To You climbs one place to number 7 again.
Also Shakira staged on the show to promote the release of her new self titled album. It starts at number 5 on the album’s list. Additionally her song Dare (La La La) enters the song charts at number 45. The song was chosen to be the official soccer WM song 2014. Of course her appearance in the new Danone commercial campaign also boosts her media presence.
After his performance on the ECHO show also veteran Peter Maffay sees his new single Gelobtes Land fly to number 48. It is his 49th chart entry at all and the highest entry since his charity project Children Of The World in 2007 which reached number 30. The singer started his chart career exactly 44 years ago. On April 1st 1970 his single Du entered the list for the very first time. In June the song was number 1.
Other TV events propel hits up the charts too. Well known DSDS (Deutschland sucht den Superstar) still has the power and influence to force music sales. Such it is the fact on following act: She was one of the Top female voices in 2012. Coming from nowhere Emeli Sandé had have five hits back in that year. In 2013 it was a little more dumbed around her. The well known songs clang on a little but new material didn’t catch really fire. So exactly one year ago also Clown had a very short chart appearance only sneaking in the list for a single week at number 93. This week the song returns with power thanks to the new season of DSDS. It was Vanessa Valera Rojas who performed the song and got her ticket for the live shows. The original re-enters the list at number 36 on sales.
It is a surprise that TV serial Tatort can launch a second hit within four months. In January it was Nick Cave who reached number 77 after his song Push The Sky Away was used in the movie. This week it is Ben Howard. The song Depth Over Distance was used in Der Fall Reinhardt a little confusing story with a highly decorated cast. Ben Becker and Susanne Wolff played the main characters. The song goes number 55.
Upcoming dancefloor tracks:
There are several tracks for the floor around with growing interest in it. First of all there is the next big thing called My Love by Route 94 Feat. Jess Glynne which still is digitally available only. The track jumps 53–20 in its second chart week which gives an impression of what might happen to the track in two weeks time when the full CD release is in shelves. It is the second Top 20 hit for singer Jess Glynne within six weeks. Already a week before its official release the new remix (the official festival mix) of Show Me Love by the Michael Mind Project enters the list. In 2008 the first version of the cover reached number 38–now it starts chart life at number 62. The original recording by Robin S. made it to number 11 in 1993. Still a long way to go for the remake. – The take on the signal theme by Kid Ink still sneaks through the end of the list. This week it collects its 28th chart week at number 90. On the way up Gorgon City Ft. Mnek arrives inside the Top 75. Ready For Your Love is number 70 in its third chart week.
Also W&W enter the list a week ahead of the official release of Bigfoot. Last week they already reached the Austrian charts. Now number 74 is the first result for the Dutch duo in Germany. It is the second list they can enter worldwide. With new remixes available finally Kids by Style Of Eye Ft. Soso finds a bigger audience. The track enters the list at number 76. The man behind Style of Eye has some chart experience as the writer of Icona Pop's I Love It which invaded the charts last year and stopped at nr.3.
The highest new entry comes in at number 35 which is the second lowest result of the year 2014. Only on January the 10th the highest new entry was weaker due to the lack of real new releases. This week it is Australian rock band 5 Seconds of Summer that see it single She Looks So Perfect stall close to the middle of the charts. Probably it aint the high time for rock issues right now. Or is it more a kind of tiredness for boy bands?
After Gäa became a hit for Oonagh on its own the proper release as CD single follows and throws the song back to the list. It enters number 67 which marks a new peak for that song.
Released midweek Loyal by Chris Brown Lil Wayne Tyga start half power at number 81. The reduced r’n’b production might have some more fire in it but will it give Chris Brown the hit he so urgently need? His last Top 10 appearance is three years ago. Even the Top 20 saw him last two years ago. His last single as main artist stalled at number 48 last summer. Ehm–there is something work to do for the star.
MR PROBZ returns to the top with Waves replacing for a second time Pharrel Williams’ Happy. Two songs that twisted twice the top position we had last seen at the very end of 2009. Back than it was Keri Hilson who shot to Nr. 1 with I Like overtaking Aura Dione’s I Will Love You Monday (256 Days) but had to leave the top spot a week later again just to return again after a fortnight.
With a second week at number 1 MR PROBZ now matches the success of last Dutch number 1 song Cowboy by Casting project CH!PZ.
A medium sensation took place on Thursday 13th of March when the Eurovision Pre-Selection was aired on TV. The competition was full crammed with big names. Amongst The Baseballs , Madeline Juno and Oceana also Santiano and UNHEILIG performed for being the German entry in Copenhagen. Latter one surely was the big favorit. Four years ago the project already won the Bundesvision Song Contest–back than the competition wasn’t that strong. Anyway it was the year when UNHEILIG was the best selling German act.
In 2014 times are different. And so is the liking of the music audience. UNHEILIG only became second this year behind no name project Elaiza. Like Söhne Mannheims in 2013 a very big act failed already within the preselection.
Of course the sales market knows different rules. Here Als wär’s das erste Mal is the highest new entry of the singles list. It lands at number 10 giving UNHEILIG its fifth top 10 hit which makes the act the most successful German one in this current decade. Although Lena performs a little better by comparing the peak positions of their hits UNHEILIG has much more chart weeks for its songs collected. With 244 it eclipses the result of Culcha Candela which only had two top 10 hits since the beginning of 2010. Additionally the second song presented on TV Wir sind alle wie eins enters the list at number 71.
Winner act Elaiza will go to Copenhagen in May-in sales its song Is It Right needs some more support. It only enters at number 41. Not the best sign for a Eurovision participation. The last time a contesting song did not reach the German Top 20 was back in 2003 when Lou went to Riga with Let's Get Happy. She back than did not chart anyway but was number 12 within the European contest.
Nr.3 of the precontest Cotton Candy Hurricane by harp player and singer MarieMarie lands at number 75 on sale. And also Madeline Juno can bring her Like Lovers Do to number 96–probably cause it is used by TV station VOX for promoting the monthly programme highlights. Later this year the song will appear also on the soundtrack of the movie Pompeii.
The difference of a release that only had a few days of sales and a full week available song can be watched at number 15. The first full week on sale gives Magic by Coldplay the missing support for becoming a proper Top 20 hit. It is the best position a Coldplay song achieves since autumn 2011 when Paradise was the actual release at number 12.
This week there are 15 new entries and 5 re-entering songs invading the survey. That's the biggest turnover for 2014 in all. The last time there were 15 new songs inside the list was back in September 2013. Most spectacular new entries come in at 31 and 32.There two people enter the list side by side that had started their chart career almost exactly 26 years ago. At number 31 KYLIE returns with her new single Into The Blue. Right behind her rapper Rakim appears on Linkin Park’s single Guilty All The Same. In 1988 he got his first fame in Germany as part of the duo Eric B. & Rakim which had two chart hits here. In 2002 he returned alongside rapper Truth Hurts and finally reached the Top 10. Since than it kept silent around him. Now Rakim is back for a fourth time.
German radio stations start discovering newcomer Georg Ezra. After the BBC called him on of five acts for the sound of 2014 the interest in the singer songwriter raises continously. This week Budapest goes 57–39. Additionally the song is part of the Keep Calm And Relax compilation on which it is the most cherry picked song. Number 2 on that compilation is Tom Odell's Another Love that also rises up the list again 65–49. It is already the 47th week for the song that charted more than a year ago for the first time.
A big media hype fails in the list: Supergeil by Der Tourist feat. Friedrich Liechtenstein only climbs to number 50 in its third chart week. Considering that the singer releases every day another Supergeil video this result is ... annoying.
The longest running chart hit Sky And Sand is back in the list due to TV Show Die Ultimative Chart-Show. As number 1 of the issue "The most successfull long standing hits" it was performed by a no name project called Attraction Black Light Theatre within the show. The original recording by Paul & Fritz Kalkbrenner re-enters the list at number 51–its first appearance since December 2012. The song so far collected 129 chart weeks. The runners up Last Christmas by Wham! does have "only" 109 weeks under his belt.
Number 7 within the survey of the Chartshow but number 5 in real numbers is Run. On TV the song was staged by Andrea Renzullo. The famous (not original) recording by Leona Lewis finds its way back to the sales charts at number 87. It is exactly the 100th time this version appears in the list.
At the very low end songs appear for the first time that might become a hit soon. Available for a month Ready For Your Love by Gorgon City Ft. Mnek finally catches fire even outside the dancefloor and enters the sales list at number 78. New at number 83 Milky Chance's next hit Down By The River starts chart life. Enrique Iglesias' new single I'm A Freak is out since mid of January. Very slowly the artist can gain some attention for it. Probably the new yellow press stories 'bout whether he should get married or not gave the track some relevance. It is new at number 89. Also French Indila arrives slowly in Germany. Her hit Dernière Danse is available since four weeks–now it comes in at number 98. Finally Canadian Bedouin Soundclash got its first entry in the German list. Brutal Hearts lands at number 99 after three weeks on sale.
