Upspeeding Charts With A Small Swiss Invasion

The Christmas rush started. The industry is releasing new material and the audience is buying. The German single’s charts dated November 25th counts 15 new entries. It is the biggest turnover of the list with completely new material. Of course we saw the two first weeks in March 21 resp. 20 tracks entering the charts – back than 10 resp. 6 of that tracks were re-entries. This recent week we do have 15 completely new tracks entering the list. The last time that happened was in February 2010 – almost 2 years ago. So the charts are speeding up right now. Of course there is a lot to tell you about – let’s start right at the top.

With a huge jump Flo Rida enters the number one with his new single Good Feeling. It is the 6th number 1 hit coming fromm an U.S. act in 2011. The states do rule the German (and European) music market. Even after an unusual four month break during late summer nothing really changed. Flo Rida is displacing Rihanna and it’s quite significant that Good Feeling also features an European producer. It is actually Swedish AVICII (Tim Bergling) who milked the formula used for his own Levels once again. It gives both rapper and producer the first ever Number 1 in Germany. Flo Rida took three and a half years reaching the top. It’s a way some others had gone before, however it is far and away from the very common career of storming the top within the first year with one of the first three singles of an act. It took Flo Rida a full 13 singles to get that much interest. He first appeared within the German charts with Low (featuring T-Pain) in 2007. Two years later he had his first big hit with Right Round (featuring Ke$ha). The big boost came late 2010 when his single Club Can’t Handle Me (produced by David Guetta) went number 4. Since then three singles were released crediting him as a performing artist. All three went Top 10. Now Good Feeling as the leading single to his upcoming album Only One Rida (Part 2) is breaking all walls. By climbing to number 1 Flo Rida is definitely one of the big male U.S. stars of now. Only Taio Cruz is someone who has similar popularity right now.

The highest new German release enters the list at position 5. It is the recent single of Rammstein lifted from their upcoming Best of album Made In Germany 1995-2011. As always the track is controversial, ironical and disambiguitive. The title Mein Land (My Country) refers to a strong self-assertion on one hand and to really right wing nationalism on the other hand. As always the band identifies itself as unpolitical – the video by Jonas Åkerlund is a comic strip on a 60s beach party. Trying to encode the signs and quotes leads nowhere. It is an empty style using a lot of clichees – it’s your own turn to love or hate it.

Usually the hits of Rammstein only spend some few weeks in the charts. Certainly also Mein Land will leave the list before the change of years.

Maybe we will see the new song from Pietro Lombardi a few weeks longer. Goin’ To L.A. is only the third single and it is completely new material – however the track misses the top 20. Is the career of the 2011 superstar over after only six months? Well – all the teenies and casting addictives are waiting for the winner of the Supertalent show. No need for stars of the springtime at all.

Another participant of the DSDS casting in springtime finally starts a career by releasing singles. Ardian Bujupi – the number 3 although he was far and away the best performer of the crowd – appears with This Is My Time. It is teen pop as well however it surprises by using strongly dancehall beats and effects. In terms of music this single is the most interesting a contestant of the last DSDS season had released. In terms of sales he unfortunately fails by only reaching position 40. Hopefully he himself does have enough strength for releasing further material. He really might become a popstar.

There is a next casting format starting on German TV. The Voice of Germany differs the most by the choice of the jury. Besides Nena, Xavier Naidoo and Rea Garvey the two front men of German country band BossHoss try to find the most amazing voice. Possibly they are the most unknown inside the show – they never had a commercial hit single although their five albums all reached the upper ranks at the album charts – only the first one missed narrowly the Top 10.

A week before the show starts on TV the band releases a new single. Don’t Gimme That immediately enters position 42. It is so far the second highest rank the band ever reached missing the result of the very first single Hey Ya! by only one place.

Let’s switch from an upcoming TV event to a past one. On November 10th the ceremony of the BAMBI awards took place. Once upon a time it was the most important German award in media and music business. Meanwhile there are doubts ’bout the importance of this „event“. The well planned scandal of this year’s BAMBI was the decoration of rapper Bushido with the award for integration.

The relevance of the award to music business shows up with sales right after the show. As an effect of her performance at the show (plus decoration with the price as Best international Artist) Lady Gagas new single Marry The Night enters at a low position 44. – Gagamania seems kind of cooled down. The lady is on tour in Europe to promote her new single and fails even in Britain (#18 after a performance at an X Factor result show !!) Well, it is the fifth single from her Born This Way album. Almost everybody owns a copy, isn’t it? – The full CD single release of Marry The Night is scheduled for 2nd December. The prospects of becoming a huge hit are very small.

Somewhat like an comeback can be witnessed at position 45. Singer Christian Franke had a hit in 1982 with Ich wünsch dir die Hölle auf Erden (I Wish You To Hell). Two follow up medium hit singles were released in 1982 and than a long silence broke down around him. In 2009 a short appearance back in the list with new material and now – again 2 years later – it seems the singer is back for real. Der Apfelbaum (The Apple Tree) is a kitschy ballad asking why people do all the bad things on earth: nuclear weapons, wars, environmental pollution, injustice ... The video shows star actor Heiner Lauterbach trying to explain that cruel world to his child. A serious topic, unfortunately produced to death by David Brandes and drowned in panpipe sound by Edward Simoni. I guess the result doesn’t change the world … it’s a pity.

A funny story full with trivias can be found around Ilhama. The singer from Azerbaijan won the national casting for the Eurovision Song Contest in 2011 – however Ell/Nikki participated in Düsseldorf and won. Ilhama finally also enters Europe with her version on Bei mir bist du scheen a classic tune grown famous by The Andrews Sisters. The track alone wouldn’t find any new fan – combined with a beat and fitted to recent electro-swing hype the Azerbaijan singer can enter the German list at position 48. Producer of the hit is German DJ OGB. I guess the track might have a chance of growing.

Lowest German new entry can be found at position 82. Tom Lüneburger is a young German singer songwriter who right now announces his second album. As lead single he offers we are one a duet with the voice of Silbermond Mrs. Stefanie Kloß. It’s a combination copying the formula young singer plus well known voice/face like heard before with Revolverheld feat. Marta Jandová or Bosse & Anna Loos. Well, it works again.

Let's have a look to Germany's neighbour Switzerland. Right now it sends some popular releases into the hit list – leading the bunch is still DJ Antoine with two hits Welcome To St. Tropez and Ma chérie. Mike Candys & Evelyn ft. Patrick Miller are still strong in sales with their One Night in Ibiza. This week two further Swiss productions join the club.

DJ Remady is hard on the heels of his famous colleagues and launches a second hit in Germany. Give Me A Sign is a late follow up to I’m No Superstar showing up in the lists last year. The new offer enters at position 58 – it is the highest rank so far for the DJ.

And finally an old mate is back: In 2011 DJ BOBO gave his 1001st concert. It was in Las Vegas and Mr. Bobo was quite impressed by the city – his next album is to be called Dancing In Las vegas. The first single taken from that release is Everybody’s Gonna Dance. If you love to listen to DJ Bobo you will for sure love the track too. So far the single performs bad. Position 70 is one of the worst placing ever. Only Colors Of Life stalled 5 places lower in 2001.

If you can count properly you get 5 Swiss productions inside the German chart. I guess that's quite a novum … if you do have closer informations, please let me know.

New German Releases Appear

Once again Rihanna serves the top single of the week. We Found Love holds the third week there – it is now the second longest stand for a Rihanna-track at the top. The crown of being the most durable Nr.1 goes to Umbrella that had a five weeks run at the top in June 2007.

I was talking 'bout fading German releases last week. This week everything changes rapidly by the latest single releases from Udo Lindenberg’s and culcha candela. Let's start with veteran singer who is very successful with his MTV unplugged – Live aus dem Hotel Atlantic album. The song in question – Cello – was originally released in 1973 with the album Alles klar auf der Andrea Doria (Everything's going right at Andrea Doria). Although it became the most popular song of the album besides the title track it was never released as a single. Now it enters the list at number 4 giving Udo Lindenberg the highest chart place ever as a solo artist. So far Sonderzug nach Pankow (Special Train Service To Pankow – Pankow is a quarter within the eastern part of Berlin) from 1983 – a cover version of Chattanooga Choo Choo with political cold war lyrics – held that crown by reaching number 5. Only once Udo Lindenberg saw himself higher in the singles’ ranking. It was in 1985 when the benefit projekt Band für Afrika he was joining climbed to number 3 in Germany.

Naming Udo Lindenberg as one of the most famous German artists today refers almost only to his album releases. The new version of Cello is only the third single that can reach Top 10 status. That's quite strange due to the fact that a lot of his songs (including Cello) are enormously popular.

Duetting partner at Cello is singer Clueso. His biggest hits so far were Keinen Zentimeter (Not A Single Centimeter) in 2008 and Gewinner (Winner) in 2009 that reached number 15 and 21. The collaboration with the senior star gives the young man from Erfurt his first ever Top 10 hit and probably a chance to reach a bigger audience. The album list already saw Clueso twice close to the top. As an effect of his performance side by side with Udo Lindenberg one of his very first singles is back in the list. chicago from 2006 appears for a week at position 100.

14 places behind Lindenberg/clueso another German act enters the list. culcha candela promotes its fifth studio album named Flätrate (you already guessed what it means) by releasing the single Hungry Eyes. It is another song about the female vamp searching for helpless men. Strange phantasies the boys hanging on … so far the mainstream audience is attracted by sound and story …

Let's mention here the third best sold German song of the week. It is a known one hanging around the upper ranks for several weeks. This recent issue Glasperlenspiel with ECHT drops 14–19.

There is a high new entry in Germany with prospects of climbing much further and becoming a huge hit. Swedish producer/DJ Tim Bergling/AVICII launches his hit Levels even before it is offically released in Germany. The big download portals like amazon list Levels as available from 20th November on. The actual list dated 18th November covers sales between 4th and 10th November. This list shows the track as new entry at position 6. I guess it clearly underlines amazon's role at the dance market. I find it quite worthful watching how sales develope after 20th November.

Further down the charts two new German productions appear. First of all the digital version of Rio De Janeiro enters the list. The new track offered by the Michael Mind Project refers to well known sound mixing the style of DJ Antoine and Benny Benassi. The vocals come from Bobby Anthony & Rozette – both absolutely unknown to German audience. Let’s wait two more weeks when physical single sales also count. Than we can decide whether this track is a hit or just a medium dance production.

Fans of Oktoberfest hits might not be depressed – next carnival season knocks at the door with approaching 11th November. A few days before that date Cologne band HÖHNER released a new single. 6 bis 8 Stunden Schlaf (6 to 8 hours sleep) is exactly that – a carnival anthem to lazy times. Probably it will disappear after two or three weeks and re-appear later in February, than for sure with much more power.

The Supertalent story of the week is 15 years old Felicitas Franke. She performed on 5th November at the show a song from Amanda Marshall. Let It Rain is an almost unknown song in Germany. It rised to number 73 only in 1996. After the performance at the supertalent show the song re-enters the list at number 90. For a track from the 90s it is an impressive feat.

Fading German Hits And A Few New Arrivals

R(ihanna) feat. Calvin Harris rebounds to number 1. It is the third time a track can reach the top position again after having at least a one week break. In 2010 we had also three tracks bouncing down from number 1 and back again. So We Found Love does nothing unusual at all. It is Rihanna’s 11th summarized week at number 1 in her whole career. She now joins Marlon Roudette and Israel IZ Kamakawiwo’ole – both of them collected the 11 weeks with one or two hits – Rihanna so far set up shorter number 1 strikes. Umbrella spent the longest time of all her top hits right at number 1: 5 consecutive weeks. That was back in July 2007.

New inside the Top 10 is Canadian Nickelback with its new single When We Stand Together. It is the 3rd single of the band reaching the upper 10 in Germany. Further down Lana del Rey meets growing interest. The single Video Games so far was available as download only – from next week on proper CD sales count also, for sure we will see her rising much higher than recent rank 17.

The Bundesvision effect slowly fades away. For the first time since June we don’t have any single German track inside the Top 10. Best sold German track is Echt (Pure) by Glasperlenspiel which slides down one place to number 14. Right behind at number 15 stops dance production Turn This Club Around by R.I.O. feat. U-Jean. After six weeks as one of the 10 best sold singles the track now starts dropping down. On the way down also Rosenstolz with Wir sind am Leben (We Are Alive) can reach the rank as third most sold German track – actually placed at number 24.

Highest new German track enters the list at position 32. It is king of Schlager and discofox Michael Wendler who after a two and a half years break reappaers in the charts. His first commercially successful hit Sie liebt den DJ (She Loves The DJ) had an impressive 30 weeks chart run although it only climbed to number 27. Since than the song became somewhat of an discofox anthem played at almost every party from Après Ski and carnival season to Ballermann Mallorca discos and the Oktoberfest. This year Michael Wendler decided to release a sequel to his hit. Now it’s called Sie liebt ihn immer noch (She Still Loves Him). The new song contains all the ingredients the old one already showed including parts of the lyrics. It is a very simple formula milked here.

The new single was released as double A-side containing a duet with young Schlager talent Anika who was casted by Michael Wendler himself earlier this year. In The Heat Of The Night was chosen as second track for the single in September when both performed the song in Oberhausen. The sound of that track is slightly different to all older releases. Seems Michael Wendler tries to enrich his repertoire with more eurodance sound. So far the new single performs in a more or less semi-successful way.

Second German artist celebrating commercial success is Roger Cicero’s. Propelled by the release of his new album which enters at number 4 at the album list teh title track and single In diesem Moment (At This Moment) jumps 97–48 in its second week.

And a third German artist has something to offer. Peter Maffay is announcing a new album, the sixth of the Tabaluga series for children. Die Zeit hält nur in Träumen an (Only In Dreams Time Stops) is the leading single featuring Monrose singer Mandy Capristo. It enters at position 86 as Peter Maffay’s 46th chart single.
Sorry for not embedding the video here. SONY does not support its artists by allowing their videos be shared. If you wanna have a look at the clip try out supported portal MyVideo.

Some releases from Switzerland and Austria also penetrating the charts more or less succesfull. Leading the pack due to it’s final release on CD is DJ Antoine feat. The Beat Shakers. The single Ma Chérie jumps 99–33. The track reminds me a lot to Stereo Love by Edward Maya feat. Vika Jigulina. Well – it is somewhat of an follower to DJ Antoine’s remix hit Welcome To St. Tropez which reached number 3 back in summer.

Already for 5 weeks on Top in Austria Hubert von Goisern can also enter the German list with Brenna tuats guat (It Burns Well – in strong Austrian dialect). It is for the first time the folk singer can reach the German charts. Probably the strong lyrics caused the sudden success although it is hard to understand for most Germans. The song expresses the anger about the financial crisis in Europe.

Second Austrian entering the German chart is fii. He performs as a living beat box and applied for participation at X Factor a few weeks ago. The audience were celebrating his performance – the judge said NO. Well – the album released already a year ago in Austria now is distributed also in Germany. The „hit single“ Power To The People can enter the list at 67 in ist first week.

Talking bout X Factor: the weekly instant effect is somehow lower than other weeks. Motto of hte show aired on 1st November was The Wild 80s. Obviously the interest in original songs recorded 30 years ago is minimal. No song performed at the show appears in the recent list. Only Kelly Clarkson gets a boost in sales after performing her single Mr Know It All at the show. The track now sits proper at number 18.

Aura Dione – The Next Big Superstar?

A surprisingly new Number 1 leads the chart of this week. Danish singer Aura Dione can gain the chart crown in Germany for a second time in her career . Geronimo is the first single taken from her upcoming album Before The Dinosaurs which is produced by names like David Jost (Tokio Hotel and Keri Hilson) and Rick Nowels (Madonna, Nelly Furtado and Colbie Caillat). A precisely planned campaign joins the release of the album: the airplay started a few weeks before, a new website was launched and – very untypically – the video is not released yet. All these facts caused a strong interest in the new single making it fly to a record. It is so far the fastest sold single not coming from a casted act in 2011.

The second number 1 for Aura Dione makes her one of the most successfull Danish acts of all times. Only once before a Danish singer reached the Top in Germany twice. It was Gitte Haenning in 1963. – In 2011 Aura Dione is the fourth act that re-enters the number 1 position with a new hit. The difference to Lady Gaga, Rihanna and The Black Eyed Peas is that those all already had three Number 1 hits before 2011. So Aura Dione is still on the way of becoming a megaselling superstar. Funny trivia besides: The Danish singer took the longest break from being Number 1 of all the acts rebounding to number 1 – almost 2 years. Probably Europeans are more calmed down in their release schedule than Americans …

Geronimo von Aura Dione

One of the longest active German rappers is back at position 14. Berlin Kool Savas started his career in the very early 90s. He only once had broader mainstream success when he was collaborating with Azad in 2005. Although he was very productive since than releasing four different albums, the interest in his work somehow faded away. Now he is back with a new album called Aura – the title track is available as a download single since 21st of October. The strong entry – it is the second highest position Kool Savas ever reached – shows the way how that senior rapper really can attract masses. The track itself is a kind of a self-assertion mixing an combatant attitude with a semi spiritual believe. In times of non controllable systems and crisis people seem finding a constant in their lifes and values in that strange melange.

As an effect of his performance at latest X Factor (25th Oktober) James Morrison manages finally to climb up the list. I Won’t Let You Go rises 22–15 reaching a new peak. It is quite strange seeing the song Top 10 almost everywhere in Europe except in Finland, Belgium and Germany.

The second casting show on German TV also brings tracks back up in the charts. Two rises are really significant.
Most loved contestant was for sure Sascha Miskovic performing The Kill (Bury Me) vocally and at the piano. The song was originally recorded by Thirty Seconds To Mars. It was the first chart hit of the band in Germany climbing to number 58 in 2007. Now the song shoots back to number 36 giving the band the second highest position they ever reached in Germany.

Audience’s darling number 2 was for sure Dergin Tokmak. Since his childhood Dergin is physically disabled – at the show he performed as an acrobatic dancer to Don’t Stop The Party by The Black Eyed Peas. The track is back in the list at number 60. Further TV influence can be found in the recent list. British singer The Good Natured slowly becomes popular in Germany. Her song Skeleton is used as a background tune for a Deichmann commercial. The track rises 83–68 in its third chart week. Finally I have to mention the second German new entry for this week. It is Roger Cicero with his new single In diesem Moment (At This Moment). The track is featuring his upcoming same tiitled new album. As a hit single the track can’t really catch fire. Itonly reaches position 97.
