June 9th 17: Thunder

Did anyone expect Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee (feat. Justin Bieber) spending a seventh week at #1 with Despacito? Well it is this reality this current week. By doing so both main artists now are the Puerto Ricans spending longest time at #1 in Germany. So far it was the honor for Ricky Martin who had his soccer anthem The Cup Of Life/La Copa vida spending six weeks at the top spot in summer 1998. Incidentally 1998 also is the year when the change of #1 went on as slow as this current year–remember Despacito still only is the third #1 hit in 2017.

Longest running top 10 hit Shape Of You by Ed Sheeran returns to #3 in its 22nd chart week. It is now the fifth longest top 10 inhabitant of this decade–on the all time statistic the song of course is scheduled outside the 20 longest running top 10 hits.

Highest new arrival in the top 10 is the new single by Imagine Dragons. Thunder is the second teaser single for their new album Evolve scheduled for end of June. First single Believer sadly stopped at #24 at the beginning of the year. Now the band is back to what they might be. It is the third top 10 single for them following the Suicide Squad collaboration Sucker For Pain which made it to #8 in summer past year.

April 28th 17: First No.1 In Spanish Since Six Years

After 15 weeks there is a new #1 in Germany. It is Puerto Rican duo Luis Fonsi Ft. Daddy Yankee that climbs one further place to get the honor of being the song with biggest sales. It ends not only the longest #1 run of a song within two decades but also a 47 weeks long presence of Europeans at the top and additionally a 30 weeks long domination of British acts at the top–the longest one in whole chart history.

Despacito is the first song in Spanish reaching the German #1 since Danza Kuduro in August 2008–incidently sung by Puerto Rican Don Omar (alongside main act Lucenzo). Despacito reaches #1 in its 13th chart week–it is a long rise but far and away a feat hardly seen. Last song taking 13 weeks to #1 was Catch And Release by Matt Simons in January 2015.
While Luis Fonsi achieving #1 with his first chart hit in Germany ever Daddy Yankee had an almost 12 years long time span to cover. Not mentioned on the official survey although his appearance on the remix definitely is the spark to fire Despacito to #1 Justin Bieber celebrates his second #1 hit in Germany.

After three weeks at #6 Jason Derulo Feat. Nicki Minaj & Ty Dolla $ign gain two more places. Swalla is Derulo's fourth top 5 hit, Nicki Minaj appears there for a second time meanwhile Ty Dolla $ign gets his highest chart appearance ever.

New inside the top 10 British/Canadian Alice Merton goes. Roots is her first chart hit ever.

With Nummer 1 sliding one place to #11 this is again a week without any German production inside the top 10. It is already the eighth week in 2017 doing so–means only nine weeks had at least one German production performing at #10 or higher. Seems this year is quite international oriented.

Highest new entry comes in at #15. There's Nothing Holdin' Me Back is Shawn Mendes' fifth chart hit and the fourth entering the top 20. All that within one and a half year.
Two further new songs inside the top 20 can be found at #16 as Good Life by G-Eazy climbs nine places and Nicht jetzt by KC Rebell & Summer Cem enters the charts at #20 for the very first time.

New Number 1: Lucenzo feat Don Omar

Germany does have a new Nr.1. After seven weeks at the top Alexandra Stan has to move right away keeping the way clean for Danza Kuduro by French–Puerto Rican collaboration Lucenzo feat Don Omar. It took them almost two complete months to reach the top – a slow rise seen not that often. The last track that entered the number 1 slot in it’s ninth week or later was We Are The People by Australian Empire Of The Sun at the end of 2010. Of course that track went on top after it was used for a commercial and re-released on CD and it’s 13 weeks rise includes the first chart run stalled at number 65. – The last track reaching number 1 within it’s original chart run in at least 9 weeks was Sexy Bitch by David Guetta feat. Akon in October 2009. By an incident that track also was the last by an French act topping the German charts. Two top hits within only two years – that’s a short period. French tracks – or French DJs to be more precise – are much adored in Germany right now.

The other man of the new number 1 hit comes from Puerto Rico. From Germany that island looks to most people as a part of the U.S. – that’s probably the reason why only a few might remember the last act from that country topping the German charts. It was Ricky Martin who had the honour of being 6 weeks noted at number 1 in summer 1998 with The Cup Of Life / La Copa de la Vida – and you certainly know which event supported the track massively. This year there is no such reason – it is obviously the infectious beat and style that attracted more and more people here. Probably it’s use in the movie Fast & Furious 5 made the track popular the very first weeks after it’s release on CD – later it became the right party soundtrack carrying all the hopes for a few really sunny summer days this year. You can find the full story behind the track here.

Do you want more statistics ’bout the new number 1? Well here it is – it is the third chart new comer this year that can bring the first hit to the top.

Highest new entry this week comes from Finland. Export band number 1 is Sunrise Ave which now offers a second single from their album Out Of Style. Their huge hit hollywood hills still sells very well – new single I Don’t Dance really has to struggle for outselling the predecessor. It lands at position 33 in its first chart week.

Highest new German track comes in at 46. Dark rock band ASP can launch their third chart hit. Wechselbalg (Changeling) is the first single taken from their upcoming album fremd (Foreign). Since UNHEILIG had their huge success the Gothic style seems really common in Germany. Let’s wait, whether ASP can follow the path. So far the new single performs better than the predecessor two years ago.
