New German Stuff - Extra

I owe you a look at the new German singles the week 10th to 16th June. Here they are:

What to do if a former star tries to launch a new release or show? Well – let’s remix one of the proper hits again and sell it as version x.0. That’s how it exactly works in the case of Michelle & Matthias Reim. Michelle never really was that kind of super star in Germany. She became famous for her attempts at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2001 when she ended up at position 8 withWer Liebe lebt (Who does live love). A few months later she had another minor hit with Idiot in companion with Matthias Reim. Than she more or less disappeared as a singer only making headlines cause of illness or financial problems. Right now she is chosen as a judge member for the imitation TV show My Name Is. So she really needs a kind of recall.

Matthias Reim had a huge success with Verdfammt ich lieb dich (Damn I Love You) which occupied the top spot of the German charts for 16 (!) weeks in summer 1990. It is still the second longest runner at Number 1 right behind Boney M.’s Rivers Of Babylon. He could launch two further hits the following years – but then he only could attract a hard core of fans. The new century saw him raising as an album star. Last year he released his 13th album called Sieben Leben (Seven Lives). It went number 5 within the album list. At the beginning of June he released a Live album and a Best of-CD is scheduled for end of July.

Both obviously would appreciate some support by a single release. Their company decided to revive the track Idiot from 2002. The track is telling a story about a couple in love which broke up and meet again after years realizing that there is still a strong emotion between them. The right stuff for romantic lovers of simple German Schlager. The track went number 34 in the year of its first release – some remixes and updated versions were released the following years. Now one can have a live version (included at Matthias Reim’s Live album) or a clean new recorded 2011 take. Both sales together give the track a re-entry at number 52 last week.

The live version 2011

Same style – Anna-Maria Zimmermann. She started her career as a contestant of DSDS in 2006. Two years later she released herfirst single becoming a medium hit . Last autumn she had a bad accident in a helicopter and now she is back with 100.000 leuchtende Sterne (100.000 shining Stars). It is a song not hooked to the usual discofox sound – it refers more to classic rock’n’roll beat accompanied by an 80ies electro guitar sound. Strange enough to enter the list at position 60 which is the highest Anna-Maria Zimmermann ever had.

After a two years break LaFee is back. Well known as a rock girl using some explizit lyrics she know seems more calmed down and settled. Ich bin (I Am) is an orchestral rock ballad using some electronic equipment also. Seems that a bad girl gets adult. The fans do love more the old one – the new single only enters the list at number 80 – it is the second lowest entry ever for her.

Even harder is life for last year’s superstar Mehrzad Marashi. After two big hits and a well sold album he broke up with his „master“ Dieter Bohlen. Now he offers his second album Change Up including single Beautiful World. It is soft pop sound as well – but last years star is not interesting anymore. It’s also scary how fast teenager can forget their idols. Beautiful World enters at number 85 – I guess we see the man for the last time around.

Though Eskalation enters as low as number 88 it is in fact the highest position for DJ duo Rob & Chris. In 2009 / 2010 they had a club hit called Superheld (Super hero). Especially in Austria it became a bigger success. Eskalation is copying last year’s Atzen sound – unfortunately the very unique is completely missing in this production. Hmm – I would appreciate to dance to a next Superheld.

Do we have to fight for German music?

Let me tell you briefly whats going on in German mainstream music market: almost nothing! – The stories of the week are already told: Romanian summer pop is popular right now and a TV show generates some hits (even for big stars). Unfortunately that show prefers international music. But it is not that bad with German music.

Watching German productions in detail we witness Jupiter Jones finally overtaking Pietro Lombardi as the act with the best sold track. Although Still is dropping slowly 10–12 it will sneak around this regions for a few weeks more. But we do have to look for the next strong hit coming from Germany. It is not Tim Bendzko who performs strong again rising 17–15 with his Nur noch kurz die Welt retten (Just have to save the world). All in all we find still five German acts inside the top 20 – that’s a strong performance and I really do not understand, why there is again an initiative to promote German music ... or even worse: German lyrics! Of course radio stations in Germany do not love German lyrics but that’s a general problem – they also do not play popular hits. It is a marketing decision to focus on black music or more rock oriented sounds. There are some pure dance stations too. I guess the association for German Language should fight for a greater range of variety in music, airplay and language. That would be an idea!

I will tell you some more about new German music later – stay tuned!

Hit making GNTM

It is LMFAO again that gains the crown of the German singles chart this recent week. For a second week the Party Rock Anthem generated most money. Closest competitor was Romanian Alexandra Stan who now is the most successful Romanian chart act since the days of Haiducii narrowly missing number 1 in 2004.

But the stories of the week are related to a TV show:

Highest climber of the week and a new entry into the Top 10 is The Edge Of Glory by Lady Gaga that finally becomes a real hit after the Lady had a TV performance at the final of Germanys Next Top Modell. Before that appearance the track sneaked around the middle field of the list never climbing higher than position 28 – meaning the chart fortunes of Lady Gaga are closely connected to medias in general and mainstream TV in particular. It is Lady Gagas 9th Top 10 hit in Germany – only two singles of her failed to climb that high. One of them was predecessor Judas that only gained number 23 a month ago.

As well Keri Hilson’s Single Pretty Girl Rock is powered by the GNTM final. After her performance at the show she can achieve the highest new entry of the week. Again the German music industry acts completely contrary to the rest of the world. The single was released already 6 months ago. It became a minor hit in the US but missed the British Top 40. Only New Zealand saw the single rising up to number 11 (see statistics here). Having a fourth Top 20 hit in Germany this country seems the place where Keri Hilson enjoys the best popularity.

Jupiter Jones climbs into Top 10

Let’s start with an absolutely amazing news: Jupiter Jones – the new German super band – enters the Top 10 in Germany. Their single Still finally hit number 10 after a 14-week-rise. It is one of that beautiful stories bout slowly but steadily growing hits. It started all in March this year when Still finally hit the shops as a CD single. The track was available before as an acoustic version on downloads only. Performances on TV at more or less serious shows not targeted on a teenager audience made them popular amongst twens and thirtyners. Their start within the charts at number 32 was already a tough first look into the commercial mainstream. Much more surprising was the longer lasting interest in the CD single and finally much more radio stations than the few alternate oriented began to play Still. Right now the song is the most played German one ranking at number 13 at the Nielsen Airplay Chart.

Number 10 in the official media control list means Still is the second best sold German track this week. Some copies more sold Pietro Lombardi’s song Call My Name. Seeing the latter one heavily tumbling down the list it is very likely having Jupiter Jones back as the commercially most succesfull German act of the week. The band already gained that honour in Mid-May when German tracks were kind of underrepresented in the charts. – In some ways Still remains on the success of Halt dich an mir fest by Revolverheld feat. Marta Jandová that had a strong chart run end of last year and still sneaking around the lower Top50.

Third best German track is San Francisco the new single offered by cascada. I just dropped a few words on this release on thursday.

Second best German CD start goes to rapper Bushido. He is far and away the most productive German hiphop star of the past few years. Wärst du immer noch hier? (Would You Still Be Here?) is the second single released from his recent album Jenseits von Gut und Böse (Beyond Good And Evil) and it is his seventh single within two years. In the 10 years of his career he was able to launch 29 tracks into the German charts so far.

There ain’t much about to tell about the new song. One could love the lyrics of Bushido or hate them – nothing in between. The new track is for sure one of the least controversial. It is a questioning about how luxury might influence emotions and love. Very philosophically it could lead to an analysis of the dependency between wealthiness and personal luck or the possibility of happiness. Of course Bushido himself does not step that far. He just asks some questions. As we all know the world of Bushido and his attitude against women the track is much more a further elegy bout only skin-deep women.

European tracks
Having Romanian Alexandra Stan and German Jupiter Jones entering the Top 10 we now count 8 of 10 top tracks with at least one European artist involved. Much more amazing the fact that of this 8 tracks only two count for British artists. Taking the 20 most sold tracks in account we still have 14 of them officially (co-)credited to European artists including five coming directly from Germany.
All that meaning: there is a strong connection to European music right now in Germany. American stars are pushed by the industry strongly and they are very present at airplay and adverts – though European acts might proof their relevance and a good sense of what’s going on in European peoples life.

chart flash 11-24: LMFAO and an omnipresent Pitbull

Finally the Europe wide hit Party Rockl Anthem also enters the number 1 in Germany. US American electro duo LMFAO already had the top spot in Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France,Ireland, Switzerland and in the UK (see statistics at acharts.us) – the world charts see them rising to number 3. It took the project six week to get on top – that’s not really unusual. The last track taking more than a month for climbing to Germany’s best sold single was The Time (Dirty Bit) by The Black Eyed Peas that set Germany under fire at the very beginning of the recent year.

It is the very first number 1 hit for LMFAO in German speaking area. They first appear exactly one year ago alongside David Guetta, Chris Willis & Fergie whit the track Gettin’ Over You that spent 27 weeks in the German list climbing up to number 15. In Austria it went to number 4 – the UK saw them shooting to number 1 for the very first time. In 2011 the so far hiatus of their career seems achieved. Follow up single Champagne Showers right now arrived in the UK list – all I can say the mood for another electro smash summer hit by LMFAO seems very likely.

Another steadily rising strong electro hit arrives at number 2 with Give Me Everything – the track presented by all star collaboration Pitbull feat. NE-Yo, Afrojack & Nayer. It is the 7th week for the track in the German list. Will it rise a place further next week?
Pitbull also occupies number 3 alongside JLO. On The Floor spends its 13th week inside the Top 10 and we can name it for sure as one of the big hits of this year.

Pitbull once again: He also appears newly in the chart at Shakira’s latest single Rabiosa where he is featured. Number 26 for the seventh track charting in 2011 with at least a guest appearance of the Cuban-American rap star.

Rising to number 4 Alexandra Stan with Mr. Saxobeat equals the result of fellow countryman Edward Maya from last year. For the first time in German pop history two years in a row see at least one Top 10 hit coming from an Romanian artist. Maybe we have to watch that country as a deliverer of summer dance pop for the next time.

Highest new entry this week is San Francisco the new single of cascada released as a teaser for follow up album Original Me. It is the well known mixture of dance pop – a new tone is the very clear voice of Natalie Horler sothat one really can follow the lyrics. (which is not necessary anyway – bubbly dance pop dream with a reference to the good old times of 1969 ... did we had eurodance music then?)

One last story for today. Recent superstar Pietro Lombardi now tumbles down in the official sales charts also. Call My Name stops at number 7 coming from the top – it is the deepest fall from number 1 since Tokio Hotel touched down to number 7 with Übers Ende der Welt in February 2007. The album chart lists Pietro Lombardi still at number 1 – so all fans of casting pop might be calmed down. The world still turns the right way.

Two comebacks: Benassi + a fake Modern Talking

A quiet chart week. Only six tracks entering the chart – two of them already were noted before. So we only have 4 real new entries two of them inside the Top 20.

A new CD – new in the top 20 but listed a week ago as download only single and thats why the gainer of the week – that’s Bag Raiders – the so far unknown Australian project heavily supported by TV advert for Vodafone. The story sounds quite familiar as you probably remember the rise of Empire Of The Sun’s rise to number 1 due to the use of it’s song We Are The People in an advert for .... guess! .... mobile company Vodafone. The company’s marketing agency does have the right feeling for the sound of the day. – The strong rise of the single is caused by the full release of the CD single. So far the track only was available digital. It will be very interesting watch the track moving next week. Could Vodafone really launch a second top hit by an advert?

Main focus of this blog is how German and continental European productions perform in Germany. Most successfull CD start of an European act lands at number 30. It is Italian DJ Benny Benassi who make a chart comeback after six years thanks to his collaboration with American Chris Brown. Beautiful People sounds familiar like last offerings by Chris Brown but strange to Benny Benassi itself. The DJ was one of the big motors of the European electro style succesfull from the mid-2000s till now. His best known track Satisfaction was a huge success in clubs all over Europe peaking number 2 in Great Britain in alte summer 2003.German buyers as always far more conservative brought the track up to number 38 only.

In commercial terms the career of Benny Benassi came to an end very soon, two more tracks and the collaboration project with his brother only could reach places lower than number 50 in Germany. Finally the DJ is back due to the recent success of European DJs and procudcers in the US. After David Guetta, RedOne or even Afrojack collaborate with big US names also Benny Benassi was asked to thrill up a track for a star. Well – to me the very origin sound of Benassi does not appear that strong on the track but it gives the DJ his highest ranking in Germany so far reaching number 30 in the first week after the track was released on CD.

Back to Germany. Most successfull German tracks are Call My Name brought to number 1 again by Pietro Lombardi. Second most popular track is Still by Jupiter Jones steadily rising and right now reaching number 11. Right behind that track newcomer Tim Bendzko lands with his lyrical ballad Nur noch kurz die Welt retten (Just have to save the world).

New in the shelves of German music stores is collaboration between two superstars of the 80s Thomas Anders and Uwe Fahrenkrog-Petersen. The new project simply calls Anders | Fahrenkrog. It is an attempt to reanimate the sound of Germany’s most popular act of all times Modern Talking. Do you remember the time when the duo hit the world in 1985/86 having 5 consecutive number 1 hits in their home country? One half of the duo was Thomas Anders. His new partner is well known as band member of Nena before they split up in 1987 and Nena did use her name for a solo career. Recently Uwe Fahrenkrog-Petersen produced some girl bands and appeared in casting shows.

The debut of Anders | Fahrenkrog is the song Gigolo – after a few seconds one feels back beamed to 1985. Probably that sound attracts a lot of older music consumers. I hardly doubt that a really young generation will care about that old school Euro disco sound. New entry at number 40 is not really what makes hope for a „next superstar project“.

Talking bout German hits we have to mention the song with the longest stay in the German charts right now. It is Geboren um zu leben (Born For Living) by UNHEILIG. It is now the 70th consecutive week the song spend in the list which is the fourth best performance behind Heavy Cross from Gossip (96 weeks), Die längste Single der Welt (The longest running single of the world) by Wolfgang Petry (81 weeks) and I Gotta Feeling by The Black Eyed Peas (73 weeks). Actually Geboren um zu leben ranks at number 82.

chart flash 11-23: Why is Pietro Lombardi still at the top?

We’re facing an absolutely bizarre situation. Although superstar Pietro Lombardi doesn’t play any significant role neither in airplay nor in digital sales charts (iTunes: nr.10 on Fr 27th of May; number 18 on Thu 2nd of June; amazon digital number 12; musicload sees number 10; mp3.saturn sees also number 10) and even the physical sales at amazon only list a number 112 – but media control reports today having his debut single Call My Name at number 1 for the fourth time. The Swiss charts recently are doubted of compiled regularly. What’s about the German ones. Do they really reflect consumption within Germany? Well – there is that speciality of media control’s official German charts. They list not thwe most sold tracks but the tracks that gained most amount of money – so cheaper mp3s/Cds count less than the ones much more expensive.

Anyway: Pietro Lombardi is only the fourth super star winner who can get a four weeks run at the top. If not freshly released Jedward single or the new track of Shakira feat. Pitbull have the power of shooting to number 1 Pietro does have the real chance of getting the superstar with the longest stay at the German top. The recent iTunes list is promising exactly that. Let’s just wait another week...
Having the five weeks run of On The Floor followed by Call My Name for four weeks we now face a situation last seen in summer 2010 when Waka Waka (This Time For Africa) had a six weeks run followed by We No Speak Americano that occupied the top spot for seven weeks.

Highest new entry of the week is The Lazy Song offered by Bruno Mars. It is his third top 10 single in a row – all charted within the past eight months. Bruno Mars also is the one and only act having three Top 10 hits in 2011 so far. With 22 weeks inside the top 10 he is far and away the best performing act so far this year. The Lazy Song actually starts at number 9.

Best new German track is Nur noch kurz die Welt retten (Just have to save the world). It is – again – a new comer who offered the song. Tim Bendzko later this month releases his debut album titled Wenn Worte meine Sprache wären (If I had words to speak/communicate) – for sure this debut will made a strong impact in the charts.

Pitbull rules German charts

Let’s start with a story about creativity in Germany. As elsewhere in the world music industry here is completely alienated. The difference is that the big companies so far did not try new ways in selling and marketing music. Most time they spend with catching digital pirates, fighting with youtube and writing accusals to internet users … The end so far is a very boring official music business and a vivant independent scene besides. That developement now found a musical counterpart: AlexTV. It’s a guy living somewhere in northern Germany and translating international hits into German plus recording and distributing them via facebook, youtube and co. One of his recent „hits“ is Price Tag well known in the version of Jessie.J feat. B.o.B. So far the German version had appr. 275.000 clicks. Of course that use of pop is very common in other regions of this world – in Germany so far it was not that usual cause of discrimination. Probably also AlexTV will get mails from major companies … Right now he brings a lot of fun and understanding to German pop lovers. I guess most of them did not get the lyrics before listening to AlexTV. – By the way: the original of Jessie.J rises up this week to number 5 – it’s highest placing since it started three weeks before.

Let’s go back to the commercial mainstream. Most successfull act of the days is Cuban-American Pitbull. Having five tracks in the recent list he ranks in 2011 so far as the male act with most appearances in the charts. Only Rihanna collected more in the past five months. Two of Pitbull’s recordings actually rising: Give Me Everything alongside NE-YO, Afrojack & Nayer is reaching position 6. Bon Bon – the well known We No Speak Americano added with some Spanish raps by Pitbull – is jumping 92 – 39.

The rise of Give Me Everything marks a historical point additionally. With credited Afrojack a second Dutch artist besides Caro Emerald is joining the Top 10. The Netherlands as a neighbour of Germany should have been much more present in the charts – but they do not. Having two dutch inside the Top 10 is a rare feat at all.

New in the Top 10 also is Adele and her Set Fire To The Rain. It is still a digital cut that can sell enough copies to rank at number 8 now. It is the second top hit for the British singer dethroning Rihanna as the female artist with most Top 10 weeks in 2011 so far. Still there is no official CD release scheduled by her company XL recordings.

The internal German list still sees Pietro Lombardi as the most sold German artist followed by Jupiter Jones their Still steadily gains increased sales ranking at position 13 this week. The third best German track is Nur in meinem Kopf (Only In My Head) by newcomer Andreas Bourani.

Further down the list the most successfull German act of the past 20 years has its 46th chart track entering. It is SCOOTER that only a month after its Friends Turbo again invades the chart. The Only One refers heavily to 1990’s The Only One I Know by The Charlatans. It was one of the first hits of the British act connected directly with so called Rave movement. Having four Top 10 hits in their home country in the ninetees The Charlatans never made it to fame outside the United Kingdom. Facing that SCOOTER’s decision reworking a track of them is quite odd. As a result The Only One only can climb to number 45 – the lowest placing ever even underselling predecessor Friends Turbo which could reach number 43.

The new Scooter track and the „basic source“ from The Charlatans 1990

Jay Khan – famous through his appearance in the boy band US5 and this year’s Dschungel-Camp – starts his own career as a solo performer. Nackt (Naked) is the very first single under his own name looking for awareness for equality and humanity. Number 59 is far away from being a real star – seems the German mainstream does not care about a strong message.

Back to European acts:
A real future hit is for sure Mr. Saxobeat brought to us by Alexandra Stan. It rises 33–20 and delivers the first Romanian hit since Edward Maya went Top 10 with Stereo Love last summer. In the UK and in Switzerland the track is already number 5.

Talking about the past as Ell/Nikki arrive in the charts. The Eurovision winning Running Scared can manage a new entry at 33 in the week of its release as a CD. Very probably the song will tumble down very fast cause no radio station really plays it. Ell/Nikki are the third Azerbaidjanian act that can gain an appearance in the German charts. Best act so far is last years Eurovision participant Safura who reached a surprising number 26 a year ago.

Number 3 of the Contest Eric Saade arrives at number 48 this week by downloads only. Popular gains the highest position of a bronze song in the contest since Tozzi & Raff rose to number 39 with Gente Di Mare in 1987. For Sweden the number 3 at the contest is the best place since Charlotte Nilsson won in 1999.

Propelled by the use as background for an TV advert Australian Bag Raiders can gain a hit . Way Back Home enters the list at 38 after its release on CD.

The advert and the full song

Very last entry at 90: Danish electro pop project Electric Lady Lab. Their You & Me heavily uses the hook line of Rhythm Is A Dancer by German euro dance act Snap!. It is the first time that Snap! gave permission to use the track ... probably we will see Electric Lady Lab rising next weeks. In their home country Denmark they reached number 2 so far.

Chart Flash 11-22: Fraser – JEDWARD – Bourani

It is the third week for recent superstar winner Pietro Lombardi at the top of the German chart. He now joins the club of last two year’s winners Mehrzad Marashi and Daniel Schuhmacher.

Highest new entry is a song by Brooke Fraser from New Zeeland. Something In The Water is a calm and romantic song fitting perfectly the recent trend of young women singing about the easy life.

Finally JEDWARD arrives. The track Lipstick now is listed for the chart – the physical single followed on 30th May according to amazon / 3rd of June according to mix1.de – it will count for next week’s chart respectively the week after. It is so far the highest ranked song of the contest that can gain an official chart place also. In Düsseldorf it became number 8. – Probably the winner song by Ell & Nikki will chart also … prospections of a good rank are minimal.

Highest German new entry is Nur in meinem Kopf (Only In My Head) by newcomer Andreas Bourani. According to some pages he is the new big hope of German music business. His company UNIVERSAL finally tried „new“ ways of promotion: His video is also available at youtube. Most of UNIVERSAL artists are blocked here. Entering the charts at number 16 it seems the right step.

The song itself is a very positive poprock track praising the joy and phantasy in life. It follows directly the sound of artists like Adel Tawil or Clueso – for latter one Andreas Bourani was the warm up act.
