TV related hits: Wetten dass...?

Finally a really good chart week: 13 new tracks enter the list – that’s the best result for 2011 so far. Last time we had more new tracks entering the chart in a single week was in November last year. But we are still far away from the „golden era“ seeing every week about 20 new tracks entering the list. Three years ago … that’s a long time.

I shortly presented the best new starts of both Cds and tracks on Tuesday. A few places short of the top 10 we find one of the most significant jumpers. It is Roxette which see their She’s Got Nothing On (But The Radio) rising a whole 20 places to no.12 after her performance at Wetten dass…? (Wanna bet that...?). The show is still the most popular Saturday night TV event. It attracts all age groups and a performance there guarants a sales boost. The recent edition brought a big surprise: Thomas Gottschalk – host for over 30 years – announced he will leave the show in summer. Last show in December saw a heavy accident in which a young man became quadriplegic. It’s probably one of the main reasons why the long year entertainer now quits his job. – The Swedish duo Roxette had much more luck with the show. No.12 for their actual single – that’s as high as they were 17 years ago, at the end of their very heydays.

Second winner of the show is Take That. They were announced to perform their The Flood in December already. But cause of the accident and the stopped show they did not. The music company (and probably the boys also) considered a performance as really necessary – so the performance was done now. As an effect the single The Flood swaps back up the charts 39 – 21 – also almost 20 places – in it’s 15th chart week. I guess this was the performance worth.

The best sold German tracks are in terms of productions unalteredly Hey (Nah Neh Nah) by Milk&Sugar vs. Vaya Con Dios. The track sits pretty at no. 8 in the singles list. Best sold track in German is again Halt dich an mir fest (Hold on me) by Revolverheld feat. Marta Jandová. Winner of last week Herbert Grönemeyer crashes down 19 places to no.29. Probably it’s an effect of the unaivalable video. Radio stations doesn’t play the song and you can’t link your facebook friends to the track … well, nobody notices that there is a new offering made by Herbie. Schiffsverkehr is now only the fifth most sold track done by German artists.

The best new track in German comes from a band founded in 1969. It was one of the most popular bands in former GDR and in the 80s they also toured through the western part. But they never had a single hit. Now 42 years after Puhdys started making music they finally enter the singles list. Hey, wir woll’n die Eisbärn sehn (Hey, we wanna see the polar bears) is a song written in 1996 as a tribute and anthem for the ice hockey club Berlin which is called The Polar Bears by their fans. In 1998 they song was first recorded due to an documentary movie. The last years were very successful for the Polar Bears. They became the German Champion in 2005, 2006, 2008 and 2009. Last year they won the European Trophy. Time for a new release of the anthem.

Though the new recorded version is not at all only a support for the club. It is more or less a party hit for the so called fifth season – carnival. To avoid misunderstandings Puhdys asked German party king Jürgen Drews to accompany them. The recently released CD single enter the hit list at no.35. It is – I told it before – the first ever chart hit for Puhdys. They are now the second GDR-act who enter the charts for the first time within a year. The band Silly did so almost exactly one year ago rising up to no.29 with their second single. So called Ostalgie (eastalgia) becomes mainstream.

The Puhdys only version

11-08: La Gaga is not (yet) no.1

Was anybody really believin’ that Lady Gaga could crash right into the no.1 spot? Well – the start of her digital release was quite impressive. If one had a look at the iTunes world charts overview on Monday last week one would have seen only one track at the top: Born This Way. Kind of amazing. And boring at the same time. – La Gaga is selling her new track like hot cakes –or as we would say in German like hot semmels (rolls) – but she misses the real giant impact one could expect. In the UK she is still at no.3 for the second week. Here in Germany she shoots up to no.2 – on download sales only I have to add. And that’s indeed spectacular. We do not see online only singles that often as high in the chart as other national charts do. The German system is based on the amount of money a track generated over a week. Meaning: a CD single for appr. 3,99 EUR counts three times more than a mp3 sale for 0,99 EUR. – So we could say Lady Gaga is selling for sure the double of Bruno Mars whos grenade is still at the top – for him the physical sales count heavily.

Lady Gaga misses no.1 – this week. With the video still not released and the CD release scheduled for 11 March we will see La Gaga at the top for sure in the next for weeks. It is Lady Gagas eighth track entering the German charts. All of them went top 10 – only her first single Just Dance and later LoveGame missing top 3. She stands now in a row with Mark Medlock who had 8 consecutive hits charting inside top 5 – but last year he missed with his single Maria Maria even the top 20. The other recent act having 8 consecutive top hits (all inside top5) and still waiting for the ninth one is German Tokio Hotel. To reach the top of this unofficial ranking Lady Gaga needs 10 more top 10 hits in a row – then she will beat all time stars The Beatles.

Do you want some more statistical gossip about Born This Way? Well here is: the track is the so far highest new entry of 2011. Wow!

The new Lady Gaga could become Natalia Kills. The American artist has featured herself with a mini serial of webisodes calling Love Kills. Her first single Mirrors is first released in middle Europe. At least Germany has catched fire – the track starts as the best new CD release of the week at no.10. I guess the US and the UK will follow soon.

Vaya Con Dios: Peak after 20 years

Once again: do you wanna know how slow and oldschool German music business is? Well – let’s have a look at the recent chart list. There are only five (!) new entries within the Top 100 plus 7 re-entries of older hits caused by TV presence or similar reasons. What’s wrong with new music? – There are a lot of fresh tunes around. And nobody cares. TV and radio stations only trust well known productions sometimes for sure they have contracts with major labels. So one can hardly find surprising new sounds there. The unheard tracks and bands are to find in the internet. But in Germany the net is the big enemy. Indeed I really don’t know any German project dealing with the net as a new way of marketing for music. Maybe Germany is the territory where the majors of the world try to install a laboratory how strict they could act. From inside Germany it seems like this.

But let’s stop moaning. There is some interesting stuff around to tell too.
As I told you on Tuesday, Herbert Grönemeyer comes with the biggest German new release this week. Schiffsverkehr is the best sold track in German also. The best production comes – once again – with Milk&Sugar vs. Vaya Con Dios and their Hey (Nah Neh Nah) climbing this week one further place to no. 7. I don’t know how the official rules work but if we take it really serious the Vaya Con Dios recording took 40 chart weeks to reach it highest ranking so far. This is one week more than long time champion Tony Marshall needed in 1972. His Schöne Maid sneaked around the list for (consecutive) 38 weeks until it reached no.3 as its climax. The all time record is held by Wham! which brought their seasonal Last Christmas in its 72nd chart weak to peak position no. 4. That was two years ago. I assume this mark will stand for a while.

Reaching the peak position after 20 years sounds record like. But it isn’t. In July 2009 the King of Pop Michael Jackson reached position no.9 with his Thriller – the highest peak for the song. It charted first 25 years and 5 months before.

Another similar story? Well – the week 4th to 10th February the new movie by Til Schweiger started at cinemas. Simultaneously the soundtrack charted – no.6 at the album list. Second highest new entry. Also some single tracks made it in the chart. At no.3 HURTS sees its new single Stay start. Further down the song from the commercial Breakeven by Irish band The Script finds its way back in the list. Although Breakeven is one of the signature songs of the band it made only no.79 when it was first released as a single in January 2009. Now it returns on download sales only reaching a new peak – no. 71 after two years. (Maybe the three concerts they had in Germany in exactly the same week helped the track also.) Additionally a brand new single Going Through Hell is available in Germany since today.

11-07: Bruno Mars is No.1 + German chart specifics

Germany has a new No.1. And that’s no surprise. After full CD release Bruno Mars sets up his song grenade right at the top of the media control single chart. He’s the latest artist crowning his career with a German no.1. Compared to others he seems to be one who will have this luck again sooner or later. Right in this moment a lot of people are considering him the next big superstar. No music fan around who had no heard ’bout him. Everybody seems familiar with his style. In fact nine months ago nobody had known a man called Bruno Mars. His first appearance within the German chart is dated back to beginning of June when he was the companion on B.o.B.’s Nothin’ On You – a median hit here present the summer time. In September Bruno Mars appaered again. This time alongside with Travie McCoy which hit Billionaire performed slightly better within the charts. Real music specialists recognised Bruno Mars’ role on the solo release of Cee-Lo Green’s F**k You which is still crowding the list. But the main break happened with it’s first own solo single The Way You Are which made up its way straight to no.2 in late November. Now finally the top spot is no unknown territory anymore.

Germany of course stands in a row with almost the whole world. Bruno Mars hits the nerves and taste of a broad audience. The mixture of bittersweet soul and excellent pop-appeal seems the right formula for launching long lasting hits – modern evergreens. Well – we will see how long this kind of pop will work. At this very moment it fits more than perfect to the search for values and true feelings recognisable everywhere.

Also the highest new entry is kind of retro style. But HURTS’ new single Stay has also huge support by German comedy movie Kokowääh (German transliteration of French: Coq au vin) which started February 3rd in cinemas. On its first weekend the movie made by Till Schweiger had over 1 mio visitors. Very much of them loved the movie including closing track by HURTS. Stay is entering the charts one week before full released as CD single on download sales only at no.3. – It is the second top 3 hit for the British synth duo in Germany and it seems that their sound is popular in German speaking countries especially. In their home country they never managed entering the top 20.

Trailer for Kokowääh

HURTS // STAY from dave ma on Vimeo.

Next new entry comes from German Herbert Grönemeyer. Schiffsverkehr (Shipping Traffic) is his 33rd solo single within the German charts. After last year’s anthem Komm zur Ruhr fur European Cultural Capital RUHR.2010 this new single is a teaser for his upcoming 13th album scheduled for release in early March. Herbert Grönemeyer is one of Germany’s most successful artists having eight no.1 albums under his belt so far. In single terms he is not that present – only nine tracks made it up to top 10 status in his almost 30 year long career. With Schiffsverkehr entering the chart at no.10 he now has for the first time three consecutive top 10 singles released.

Unfortunately again the video is blocked by German music label and rights society. A quite usual habit right now in Germany. If you are interested in listening to the new Grönemeyer-song please visit the artist’s own homepage.

German music companies against the web

After last week’s somehow calm and static list music business comes back to life again. 8 new entries plus two tracks re-entering the list – that’s not bad. Indeed it is the same level as we’ve witnessed two weeks before. The times when we had 20+ new tracks in the chart seem long ago.

The most impressive rise was made by DiddyDirtyMoney. The trio sees ist single Coming Home vaulting 10 – 4 after its use in a TV commercial for the next Stargate-season which starts in March. Heavy airing could cause much more interest in the single. On February 4th the new album Last Train To Paris came in stores whiche usually gives singles an extra boost. Would be no surprise seeing Coming Home next week within the German top 3. Even without stepping higher Coming Home is the highest rank Diddy made since I Don’t Wanna Know saw him topping the German charts as featured artist in 2004. The last top hit as main artist is way back in 1999 when Satisfy You (feat. R. Kelly made no.2.

Next surprise comes with the look of best selling German productions. DJ duo Milk&Sugar still leading the list rising one place to no.8 with its take on Vaya Con DiosHey (Nah Neh Nah). The track is still catchy and attracts a lot of music consumers. So that’s not the big news. But let’s have a look at best sold track in German. It comes once again from Revolverheld feat. Marta Jandová. Their Halt dich an mir fest (Hold on me) climbs back into the top 10 in its 11th chart week which is the highest position since beginning of December. All the weeks in between the song crept around this position never falling deeper down than no.14 mid-January. I don’t know really what caused the new rising interest. Maybe it’s a result of weak competition?

Weak competition – that’s the word for the CD single start of culcha candela’s Berlin City Girl. The track charted two weeks before on download sales only rising up last week to no.21 and now misses narrowly the top 10 on combined sales. It is a surprise indeed. If one sees the advertising machinery working around the track one should assume that this is the biggest new track of the winter. Versions for Austria and Switzerland were pushed separately – a lot of interviews and video snippets sneaking around but – and maybe that’s the main reason for the relatively low interest – the track itself or the video is available only at the band’s homepage. Additionally embedding function is disabled. Maybe the band and especially the company now have to learn what the culture of embedding, linking and liking really means … btw: If you wanna watch the video visit the band’s homepage

Let’s go back to good news! There is a song cruising around the charts since November last year but never had that big impact. It started at no.44 soon falling out of the upper half of the list down to no.70 in late December. Then it became a hit in more or less whole Europe: no.1 in Austria, Belgium and Ireland, top 5 in France and finally rising up the UK charts as well. Even the U.S. dance charts saw the track passing a no.1. The song I’m talking about is simply called Hello and it’s an offering of Canadian band Dragonette remixed by French Martin Solveig. Slowly the track catches fire in Germany also rising since beginning of the year continously and finally entering the top 20 this week. It’s the 14th week the song spent within the list and I wouldn’t be surprised seeing it climbing further.

11-06: short flash – European connections

A second week at the top of the German singles list for Adele. Rolling In The Deep still is the most sold track in Germany like in several other mid-european countries. Lucky Adele – her album 21 slides down to no.2 in the album list but holds a proper top place within the new monthly independent charts.

It seems to be given, that Adele will leave the top spot as Bruno Mars is rising continously sitting at no.2 on download only sales. The physical release is in shops right now so we will see grenade at the top of the German singles list for sure.

Best new entry (but not the best single start ... I will talk bout this later this week) comes from American Flo Rida. Turn Around (54321) is the second single taken from his album Only One Flo (Part 1). Both single and album completely failed in the U.S. and in the UK. No.15 in the first week of its release is not that bad at all. Seems that Flo Rida got a broad fan base in Germany.
Turn Around (54321) is build around a sample by Swiss electronic duo Yello. The original Oh Yeah charted in Germany end of 1987 reaching no.47. Funny trivia – the track never charted in their home country Switzerland nor in Austria but it is the one and only track ever listed in the Hot 100 Billboard charts reaching no.51. The track was used in several movies and games especially as theme for Duffman of The Simpsons. No wonder Flo Rida chose this track for his new offering.

Also the second highest new entry has a European connection. The come back single of Swedish Roxette She’s Got Nothing On (But The Radio) is the first offering since One Wish was crowding the list in late 2006. As one of the super acts of the early 90s Roxette boast their 33rd track into the charts now. In addition no.18 for their new single is the highest rank since Sleeping In My Car rised to no.11 in 1994. Welcome back to the upper regions! And again: Germany likes well known acts, remember last year’s come backs of A-ha, Alphaville or even Kim Wilde. Plus … the 90s are back .... mpf!

11-05: waiting for the new stuff

The chart from 4th February 2011 reflecting sales 21st to 27th January should show a lot of activity. At the top such a change of hits happens. Further down … nothing really exciting. Only four new entries and two re-entries – all together six tracks not listed a fortnight ago. That’s really solid. Last time we saw such a slow chart list was 3rd September 2010. Do you remember the rush of new tracks crashing into the list two ... three ... four years ago?

Times are changing. I wonder why all other charts around the world behave completely different. I guess German music industry somehow denies the final steps for getting into the digital area. They fight against youtube, digital releases are mostly synchronized with physical releases. Campaining for new music via TV is done only for some acts with sure CD release. The whole digital market seems completely unknown. Hot new music from outside of Germany is hardly available – take at least the huge grime invasion in Great Britain. In Germany nobody cares about it. One can inform about new tendencies by surfing the net. But every third track comes with a „Not available in your country“-warning. To me it looks like discriminating a whole generation of music consumers.

Well – let’s not argue bout what should be. Let’s have a look what is in reality. Most popular German track with the highest amount of sales is again Milk&Sugar vs. Vaya Con Dios Hey (Nah Neh Nah) finally reaching top 10 status and giving both acts their first top hit ever. German DJ duo Milk&Sugar took almost exactly 10 years to do so, Belgian Vaya Con Dios had to wait almost 20 years since charting first in Germany.

Most popular song in German is still Revolverheld feat. Marta Jandová Halt dich an mir fest (Hold On Me) sliding down one place to no.13. Upcoming next big German song is the new single from culcha candela Berlin City Girl which is in shops as physical release since 28th February. It is the second new recording from the band’s best of-album released last October. This week Berlin City Girl jumps up the list as an download only track 53 – 21. Take it for guaranted having it inside the top 10 next week. (The video is available on Culcha Candelas site: culchacandela.de – embedding not aloud)

Addition 05th February
Man of the day is more or less Bruno Mars having two simoultaneous hits inside the top 10 plus appearing as the producer of Cee-Lo Green's F**k You which still invading the upper half of the list. The woman with the biggest presence is once again Rihanna. This week her new single What's My Name? (alongside with Canadian rapper DRAKE) is entering the list at no. 12. Who's That Chick? and Only Girl still cling on inside the top 20 and even the duet with EMINEM – the former no.1 Love The Way You Lie is straying through the list. Four tracks in one list – Rihanna itself did two years ago better havong 5 tracks charted at the same time. Having several hits in the list for more than two years – that seems quite spectacular.

Germany loves Adele

That is more or less literally translated the headline of the weekly press information given by media control every Tuesday. Her album 21 enters the German album list directly at the hot spot. Simoultaneously her single Rolling In The Deep climbs up two places sitting now properly at no.1 in the singles’ chart too. Adele had a huge TV support by the so called Dschungelcamp – Germany’s version of I Am A Star – Get Me Out Of Here!. Her song was aired very prominently within the show right after the release of the album. The fifth season of the reality TV show had the most viewers of all seasons (an average of 8,93 Million) . No wonder the airing had some impact on the music market as well. As the independent chart site oljo.de reports a lot of older hits shot up the download list after they were aired within the show. Only the main title by Die Zipfelbuben seems to fail completely.

Some weeks ago I called Adele the final winner of the female northern soul invasion from 2007/08. Finally she grabs the crown with these simoultaneous no.1. And she is the first British act to top the German singles charts for 3 years. Last no.1 from the UK came in April 2008 from – what an incident – Duffy and her Mercy which spent a single week there. Will Adele have the power of staying much longer?

Asking this question comes with good cause. Bruno MarsGrenade is rising up the list very fast – landing at no.3 this week. The full physical release is scheduled for February 4th. Download lists like iTunes or amazon are listing Grenade right now at no.1. If he will enter the top by next week this would be the very first time a digital download only single will do so. Most radio stations in Germany took Grenade into heavy rotation meaning the tune catches fire right now. It is for sure the next huge hit in Germany. Question is: when will he enter the top? – We’re really witnessing a struggle between two very soulful tracks right now. Keep your eyes and ears open for the next days!

Moves at the top of the chart leave the highest new entry somehow overshadowed in the dark. The biggest CD release of the week is not at all the biggest story. Bad luck for a man who is a big name since 14 years and who dissappeared for the last three years. I’m talking bout P. Diddy or Diddy as he prefers to be called right now. Accompanied by two ladies he formed DiddyDirtyMoney (or one would find spellings like Diddy–Dirty Money et al.) which is offering a first album right now. Last Train To Paris will be released in Germany on 4th February. Two weeks ahead the single Coming Home entered the shops. A track starting very soft with a piano melody but landing in the end as an orchestrally produced rap track. I’m not at all that deep into American HipHop but to me this take doesn’t sound very new or surprising. It is a well produced tune built around the voice of featured artist Skylar Grey who is an upcoming name. As wikipedia tells us she co-wrote the EMINEM/Rihanna track Love The Way You Lie for which she was Grammy nominated. In Europe almost nobody had heard of her. With Coming Home the story turns over.

For all you statistic geeks out there: Coming Home is Sean Combs’ 23rd chart single in Germany (counted together all tracks he is somehow named on). It is the 11th track landing inside the German top 10 and his first appearance there after a four years break.
If one is not that much into Rap/HipHop try out this smooth electro rework skipping the master’s voice out completely and featuring only Skylar Grey’s voice.
